Dalhousie has a cold climate and awonderful old world charm pleasantlyremoved from discos and other trappings ofmodernism. Established during the 'Raj' as asummer retreat, the place remains great forpicnics, treks, and other outdoor activities.Dalhousie's inherent charm lies in its lushgreenery, solitude, and meanderingstreams. A couple of spots worth checkingout are Kalatop Wildlife Reserve and GanjiPahadi Walk. The wildlife reserve is an oldgame park while the latter is a bald hilltopfamous for treks.

It is a toy-town in the mountains with a pastthat translates into sprawling bungalowsand charming cottages reminiscent ofEuropean villages, beautiful churches, acemetery spread over nine terraces, ruins ofa beer brewery and several colourful rockfrescoes painted by Tibetan émigrés. 1 Chamunda Devi Temple

Chamunda Devi Temple is dedicated toGoddess Chamunda, the fearsomeincarnation of the Divine Mother. She gotthe name after killing two demons by thename Chanda and Munda. The templedepicts various scenes from the Ramayana,Mahabharata and Devi Mahatmya on itswalls. The image of the goddess is flankedby Hanuman and Bhairava (Shiva). The backof the temple is cave like, wherein rests alingam under a boulder, that representsNandikeshwar (Shiva).

The setting of the temple is very picturesqueand one can get magnificent views of theDhauladhar mountain ranges.

2 Chamera Dam

About 8 km from Banikhet, lies the ChameraDam (also called Bhadrakali Lake) whereefforts are on to develop water sportsactivities. The dam and a rock-littered slopecalled Devi Dehra nearby provide a space tounwind.One of the most famous tourist attractionsin Dalhousie, the dam is a preferred picnicspot for the locals and tourists alike.

3 St John Church

St John Church is the oldest of Dalhousie’sfive stately churches and is dedicated to St.John.Built on stern Romanesque lines, the 1863Protestant church contains the 19th-centurystained glass painting of Jesus flanked by StJohn and St Peter. Constructed in the Britisharchitectural style, this one is a fine exampleof buildings of the Victorian era.

4 Panchpula

Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh, India

Panchpula has two impressive waterfalls. Toavoid the crowds, an early morning trek isadvised. If you care to climb a wee bit, youcan take a 2.5 km trek by the stream to AlhaReservoir on Bakrota Hill, and then walkback to town (2 km) by apucca road. It is also a nice place to sitaround and have a small picnic. A few stallsoffer tea and snacks.

5 Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh, India

Kalatop, a hilltop dedicated to Lord Shiva,boasts of a grand view of the Pir PanjalRange. The hilltop falls in the KalatopWildlife Sanctuary, whose altitude variesbetween 1,460-2,750 m. The sanctuary wasnotified in the 1970s to protect what wasonce a gaming reserve of the Chambaroyals. There are no guided tours and visitsare restricted to the Kalatop Peak. Mostvisitors treat the place as a local picnic spot.

To avoid the crowds, take the 2-km path toKalatop Peak. Most of the park’s steepterrain consists of dense coniferous and oakforest with the upper reaches rich indeodars. The wildlife here includes bear,leopard and the shy ghoral. Kalatop is anopen forest, which means that the animalsmove in and out of it depending on theseason.
