2014 Dalby Show Success!Book out your weekend for next year, because if this year was any indication of what will be on offer in years to come, the Dalby Show is proving to be becoming bigger and better!

This years show was definitely different from those of the past! Each year as the show approaches, what automatically springs to mind is exhibitions, dagwood dogs, and sideshow alley. However, this year really had an impressive range of entertainment on offer for all age groups and interests! If sideshow alley really isn’t your thing, then maybe the horse and ring events, young farmer’s challenge, machinery display, show car display, freestyle motocross, demolition derby, aerial dance performance, or a whip cracking slapstick comedy act may have caught your attention ... and this is just to name a few!

I must put my hands together for the Crack Up Sisters, who in my opinion, were undoubtably the show stealing act of the weekend! The main focus for this whip cracking female duo, is to promote Australian slapstick comedy and carry on the heritage of Australian stock whip cracking within the youth of regional Australia. With this, a three day workshop funded by the Regional

Arts Development Fund & Western Downs Regional Council was on offer to the youth of Dalby this year. Over the course of the workshop, the Crackup Sisters worked closely with the participating children in teaching them basic stock whip cracking and knockabout acrobatic skills, in which they were able to demonstrate these new found skills to the general public in Friday nights entertainment.

In addition to this, the duo themselves provided entertainment throughout the entire course of Friday keeping the crowds drawn in and well amused, and finishing up with a hilarious performance for the main act on Friday night.

With the Eljay Freestyle Motocross demonstration, Crackup Sisters, Wilde Applause aerial dance performers, young farmers challenge and fireworks, it really was family entertainment at a whole new level! And what a breath of fresh air it was to have so many talents right here on our door step! I think it’s safe to say it was a great weekend had by all.

Get that footloose feelingDalby State High School prides itself on presenting professional and entertaining annual musicals, and this year will be no exception. Audiences will be left tapping their toes and humming the familiar tunes of the much loved classic, Footloose.

This year’s production is directed by the talented Jeremy Wood. Mr Wood commented that throughout the process, he has been immensely impressed by the dedication and skill of the students “who have worked tirelessly to get this show off the ground.” He has no doubt that “by production week, they will have officially reached showstopper status!”

Mr Wood has created a fresh take on this classic story about love, family, rebellion and resilience. Over 100 students are involved in this year’s show and, as always, the school community have banded together to bring the many facets of the musical to life. Chorus members have been creatively challenged by the dynamic dance moves and in true Dalby State High style, they have met this challenge head on. Mr Wood states that “the singing, acting, choreography and energy is outstanding and we cannot wait to share this classic story with our audience!”

So come along and be taken for a dance down memory lane from May 20th, 21st, 23rd and 24th.

JUSTIN MA – WEDDING/portrait PHOTOGRAPHER Raised in the small city of Townsville, North Queensland, Justin has been based in Brisbane for the past nine years and travels Australia wide and internationally as a professional photographer. His work has been mainly focussed on fashion, photojournalism, portraiture and weddings. “I love many areas of photography. Shooting all these different genres has helped me refine my technical skill as well as shaping my style of work. I always draw and combine inspiration from all genres of photography in my work”.

Justin’s first camera was his mum’s 1982 Nikon FG, coincidentally bought the same year he was born. But it wasn’t until he was in university midway through a psychology degree that he discovered his love for photography as a means for creative expression. It didn’t take him long to then transfer into a Bachelor of Photography which he graduated from after three years. As soon as he completed his degree, he moved down to Brisbane to pursue work and since then he has visited many places around Australia and the world with his photography.

His first photography job was in a portrait studio in Brisbane. This is where he honed his skills from photographing everything from individual portraits, glamour, modelling folios, budoir, couples and families. This gave Justin the experience and confidence to soon establish his own photography business. At first he focussed mainly on fashion photography and photojournalism, but then soon realised he could combine both these styles in photographing couples and weddings. “The thing I love about photographing couples and weddings is that I get to draw inspiration from a lot of different other areas of photography. I like to keep my work as fresh and modern as possible as this is what I have found a lot of my clients enjoy.”

Before any photoshoot, Justin always tries to get to know the client and what they would like to get out of the photos. This is very important

to achieve photos that are unique and personal. It is also good way to help the client relax, as most of the time it will be their first experience in front of a camera. He doesn’t like to do photos that are too over posed, he tries to keep the photos as natural as possible and will always help by giving direction. “All photos require at least a tiny bit of posing, however I try to keep it as relaxed as I can. Especially when photographing couples, it’s all about capturing the little moments that show their connections with one another.” He also likes to shoot on location, as a studio setting can be too intimidating and artificial looking for a lot of people. With any of Justin’s photo packages you will receive magazine quality edited high resolution images on disc of the best shots from the day. He also offers prints, framing and personalised hardcover photo books.

After recently photographing a lovely couple from Dalby, he is now organising some dates to come out and offer his services. “I really enjoy shooting in the wide open spaces in the country, I can get shots that you cannot normally get in the city. There are so many photo opportunities.”

Justin will be in Dalby on the weekends of 17th -18th May and 7-8th June, as well as 28th-29th June, and is available for couples, individual, family and folio photoshoots. Bookings are limited and have to be made in advance. Please contact Justin at [email protected] or phone 0402 724 478 for enquiries. In the meantime you can view his work at www.justinmaweddings.com.au and www.justinmaphoto.com.au.

SAINT COLUMBA’S CONVENT Saint Columba’s Convent, in Cunningham Street, was built thirty-six years after the Sisters of Mercy, first arrived in Dalby. Sister Mary Rose, Sister Mary Beatrice, Sister Francis and Sister Ligouri had arrived by train in 1877 they came for the love of God and the Spiritual formation of the children. Many more Sisters were to contribute to the Spiritual teaching during the life of the building.

The late Sir James Duhig, Archbishop of Brisbane consecrated the magnificent new St Columba’s Convent at Dalby, on Sunday 8 June 1913 in the presence of a record crowd. After Mass held in St Joseph’s Church, a banquet was held in St. Joseph’s Hall. The then Father Nolan, parish priest, later to be Monsignor T J Nolan, presided, and there were also present Fathers O’Keefe, Warwick, O’Keefe, Dalby, the Mayor of Dalby, Alderman W R Hunter, Mr. L E Groom, M.H.R., W J Vowels, M.L.A., Victor Drury, representatives of the Chinchilla, Dalby, and Toowoomba Hibernian Societies, and about 400 other guests.

After the loyal toast, Father Nolan proposed the health of the Archbishop, which was supported by Mr. Hogan. His Grace expressed his delight at being amongst them.

After the banquet, a procession was formed by the official party and they marched to the site of St Columba’s Convent. After the Archbishop had performed the ceremony of blessing the new building, he delivered an interesting address, in the course of which he referred to the growth of Catholicity at Dalby, and paid tribute to the work of Father Nolan and his people.

Father Nolan responded by thanking the Archbishop, and then he presented the figures

for the total cost of the building. The final figure was £7433 including £342 for the architect’s fees and the clerk of works fees being £224. He appealed for support from the community to help with the debt of £2800. The following amounts that were received on the day and were listed, is as follows: Rev. Mother Patrick, All Hallows’, Brisbane, £100; Sisters of Mercy, £100; architect, £100; Father Nolan,£50; Father O’Keefe [Warwick]£20; past girls of St Columba’s Convent, £110; St Joseph’s Hibernian Society, Dalby£50; Taroom, £27; Chinchilla, £40; ladies’ committee,£60; Mr. J G Appel, 10 guineas; as well as various other amounts with the total coming to £1600. It was Father Nolan’s positive attitude and his strong faith that attributed to

the respect and love that not only the members of the Church, but the general community afforded him.

His Grace, preaching at St. Joseph’s Church in the evening of the 8th, took the opportunity of thanking the people for their splendid manifestations of faith, kindness and liberality.

Saint Columba’s Convent still stands after 100 years, as a dignified lady, although somewhat aged in the grounds, but what wonderful teachings have passed through her doors.

Dalby Drama FestivalPlans are well in hand for the annual Dalby Drama Festival to be held on July 12 and 13.

Now in its 19th year, the festival is hosted by Dalby Players Little Theatre and is held at the Little Theatre on the corner of Myall and Chubb streets.

The festival attracts theatre groups from all over southern Queensland.

Many of the one-act plays are new works written by Queensland playwrights especially for this year’s drama festival circuit.

The Dalby festival was one of the first in Queensland to introduce a Playwright’s Award and many previous winners have since had their works published.

This year the adjudicator will be Damian Overton. Damian adjudicated at several festivals last year and is making a name for himself. He previously competed in the Dalby Drama Festival several years ago as an actor and as writer and director of junior plays.

His plays regularly won awards around the

festival circuit.

Entry forms and more information on the festival are available from the festival convener Nancy Evans by phoning 0427 685 048 or by emailing [email protected].

Entries close on June 1.

RASMUSSEN REPRESENTS AT DISTRICT FINALDalby State High School student Alex Rasmussen progressed through the Regional final of the National Australia Bank Lions Youth of the Year (YOTY) held in Dalby last month to the District Final held at Murrumba.

Fending off excellent challenges from Club runner-up Gemma Hartwig from Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, and Hannah Redrup and Laura May from Chinchilla State High School Alex achieved the title of Regional Youth of the Year and Public Speaking winner.

A large crowd representing Lions from Dalby and Chinchilla, along with members of the contestant’s families and school communities, attended the event, held at the Lions Den in North Street.

YOTY Chairman Roger Henderson could not hide his excitement at the result.

“It is impossible to pick favourites among the

contestants given the high standards shown by each of them, but it is thrilling to see a Dalby student go to the District final representing our Club.

“Any one of the students is capable of representing the nation’s youth in this forum but there has to be a winner on the night and our very capable judges have delivered Alex as our representative in this program and we couldn’t be prouder to have our Club represented.

The Regional finals judges were Sarah Orth from our National Sponsor the National Australia Bank and Tom and Lyn Bower.

In spite of a sterling effort, Alex was just pipped at the post in the District Final but his representation of the Club and of Dalby Youth in the YOTY for 2104 was exemplary.

How lucky are we to have high schools and parents who deliver our communities youth of the calibre of all our YOTY contestants?

Congratulations to our students, teachers and parents who are creating our future leaders in commerce, industry and public service.

Schools and community groups receive $11,000 under the first round of the Enviro Grants ProgramOne primary school and two community groups are the recipients of the first round of funding through The Recycling Market Enviro Grants Program, a joint program by Western Downs Regional Council and JJ Richards & Sons.

Council Spokesperson for Environmental Health Councillor Greg Olm said the selection panel has chosen three very deserving programs to support.

"The Enviro Grants Program is funded from 25 per cent of the net proceeds of The Recycling Market at the Dalby Waste and Recycling Centre and is aimed at encouraging community-based initiatives to improve environmental sustainability," he said.

"It was a pleasure to discuss the individual projects with the winners over a morning tea recently and I look forward to seeing the programs we're supporting come to fruition."

The recipients of the first round of The Recycling Market Enviro Grants Program are:

• Jandowae State School — will receive about $2,700 to help them implement

recycling, composting and mulching as part of delivering the 'Across Curriculum Sustainability Program' with Year 4 students

• Rotary Club of Dalby — will receive $5,000 to help build disabled toilets for the 'Dalby Men's Shed' so that their members can more easily get together to undertake recycling programs such as refurbishing pushbikes for overseas aid projects

• Waminda Services — will receive about $2,970 to install a rain water tank that will help their clients establish a vegetable and herb garden

The next round will open later this year, with the winners due to be announced during National Recycling Week in early November.

GREEN THUMB EXPRESSCALL FOR POTTED PLANTS FOR DROUGHT GARDENS - ANY TYPE, ANYWHERE IN QLD (except fire ant restricted areas, sorry)

In order to help people whose garden’s have been hurt by the drought, the Green Thumb Express is asking you to pot up something from your garden or purchase some drought tolerant plants from your local nursery.

"Green Thumb Express began when our creek ran dry during this drought and I had to stop watering my garden for the first time in 32 years.

Ladies in our area were discussing how many people had either run out of water, had to change to harsh bore water as well as cope with record temperatures this summer in the middle of this devastating drought. I live near Windorah in western Qld and we have been drought declared since June 2013.

We came up with the idea that if people were willing to pot plants and donate cuttings/plants then it would go a long way to helping those who have lost all or part of their garden when the drought finally breaks. And so Green Thumb

Express was born." - Gay Tully, Windorah SW Qld. (Facebook name Marina Tully)

There is currently a run scheduled for early May, so any donations of plants will get to the people who have registered their gardens in need of revival after the drought – Mitchell, Mungallala, Charleville, Tambo, Quilpie and Windorah. That is just on this run. There will also be a run from Warwick/Goondiwindi west to St. George and Cunnamulla.

We will be looking to do other runs up until end of September 2014, which will be the end of the collection and distribution of plants.

We are encouraging each community to make the most of the idea and get their own communities and garden groups on board.

PIONEER PARK MUSEUMRecently, the members of the Pioneer Park Museum & Vintage Machinery Association of Dalby were invited to exhibit their vintage engines, tractors and trucks at the Bell, Jandowae and Dalby Shows. First was the Bell Show on 2nd March and a very good roll up of the machinery widely used for farm chores were to be seen working doing the jobs they were made for, giving the present generation of farmers an insight to see how mechanisation took over from the horse and how work on the land became quick and easier.

Then on the 22nd March, it was Jandowae’s turn to stage their annual Show. Again, the members exhibited their old machines to the delight of show patrons. The scene repeated as at Bell, with young farmers inquiring about how the engines were started, and how they performed under load for the various tasks such as pumping water for stock, sheep shearing and crutching, power

generation for homes and farm work, corn shelling and milking machines.

The types of fuel used by the old engines and tractors include petrol, kerosene, crude oil and dieseline. Some engines had to be started on petrol and when warmed up, then changed over to kerosene by a two-way fuel cock to utilise the cheaper fuel. Some vintage engines and tractors were designated ‘all fuel’ engines, meaning that the unit could run on a variety of fuels such as petrol, kerosene, or lamp oil, others could operate on fuels like power kerosene, dieseline and lighting kerosene. The Lanz tractor could run on crude oil, waste oil, or diesel and do a very good job of any task required by the farmer.

The last Show, which the members participated in with a good number of entries, was the Dalby Show on 11th and 12th April, again going through the ritual of showing off their pride and joy to visitors to the Show. Over a dozen

members of the Club took part in the display.

Over the next few weeks, the members will be carrying out working bees and planning every aspect needed to organise and run the Annual Vintage Machinery Rally held over the weekend of 24th & 25th May. Visitors from many vintage Clubs from South Qld will be displaying and operating their restored pride and joy over the weekend daily from 8am to 5pm.

The Dalby Pioneer Park and Vintage Machinery Association meet every two months at the Club rooms situated at the Pioneer Park Museum at 17 Black Street, Dalby, just off the Warrego Highway. People interested in the Vintage scene are welcome to come along to a meeting or phone Dan Fox on 07-46624760; Garth Brownsdon 07-46624886; Jim McCotter 07-46622416. Further details can be found on the Museum website.

RACQ CareFlight FundraiserWhile billed as a Fun Bowls Day Fundraiser for RACQ Careflight, a week of welcome wet weather put paid to any plans to get on to the greens on Sunday, 30 March 2014. However, a comprehensive program of activities inside the clubhouse kept attendees well occupied while the sun struggled to break through. The afternoon kicked off with a fashion parade, organised and compered by Kathy Sankey of Postie Fashions, Dalby. This was followed by a scrumptious afternoon tea and live music provided by the Dennis Sankey Duo. Tupperware, crafts and baked goods were on sale and a multi draw raffle and auction kept the room humming with anticipation and laughter.

RACQ CareFlight rescue is a not for profit community rescue helicopter service watching over a region extending nearly a quarter of a million square kilometres south into New South Wales, north to the town of 1770, and from the Coral Sea to the Surat Basin and beyond. Their website states that RACQ CareFlight Rescue's biggest supporters are the communities of southern and central Queensland, who

provide almost half of the charitable service’s funding. Congratulations to the organiser of the fundraiser, Margaret Bailey, Daandine and all her helpers for contributing to this amazing effort. Congratulations also to the many businesses and individuals who supported this worthy cause with donations of goods and services to the multi draw raffle and auction.

Moonie is 50 & we want you to help us celebrate!Do you have a connection with Moonie, either with the oilfields or the district? Fifty years ago, in 1964, the Moonie Oilfields was built to pump the newly discovered oil reserves. Many people built the facilities here, and many more worked and sometimes lived at the Moonie Oilfields. The recently balloted farming blocks were being cleared and the pioneering farming and grazing families of the Moonie district looked forward to a wonderful new district that they hoped would grow and prosper. Moonie State School recently celebrated it’s 50th year as well.

In 1964 a group of locals decided to build a

tennis court, then cricket grounds and the Moonie Sports Club began. It’s still the hub of the district and has hosted all manner of sports including cricket, tennis, netball, an AFL club, a gun club, fitness and ballet groups, as well as a well stocked and run bar, many different groups who meet there, our famous yabbie races, playgroups, school concerts, Arts Council performances, weddings, christenings, twenty-firsts and funerals. Over the years, the volunteer run sports club has expanded and updated it’s facilities and we now boast arguably the best hall and facilities for many kilometres (yes, we are boasting, but it’s true! We even have mobile

phone signal now!!)

Please come and help us celebrate our half century on Saturday 7th June. It’s a very rare opportunity to tour the Santos Moonie Oilfields as it is usually a restricted area for safety and business reasons. Tours begin there at 11am then travel the short distance to the Moonie Sports Club, where the afternoon’s fun will lead on into an evening of food, fireworks and a great live band. Please RSVP for catering so we can feed you all! It will be a great day to remember.

Chamber ChatMarch has gone and Easter is upon us, and planning for events to be held later in the year is well underway. Our Business Excellence Award Committee is working hard and all are very confident that this years event, planned for October, will be the best yet.

Speaking of great events, March’s Business After Hours event was hosted by the Dalby State School. School Principal, Mona Anau treated members to a very informative visual display of the students’ activities, we were introduced to the students’ leadership team and were entertained by the school choir. It was a time for reminiscing for some of our members who are former students of the school.

At this event we presented an Exceptional Service Award to Lisa Harber, an employee of Dalby Hospital. Lisa was introduced to members by Colleen Rasmussen, Director of Nursing at Dalby Hospital. The event sponsor, Ray Hodge of Ignite Consulting, presented Lisa and Colleen with Award Certificates.

April’s Business After Hours was hosted by the Dalby Herald. Nicole and her team provided a brief history of the paper in Dalby and informed members of the many activities in which the business was involved.

Our Exceptional Service Award went to Kerry Jiggens, an employee of the Cunningham Street News. Kerry was introduced to members by Pauline Laverty, proprietor of Cunningham Street News. The event sponsor, Michael Harth of Carrick Aland Accountants presented Kerry and Pauline with Award Certificates.

Have you been well served by someone lately; do you know someone who always serves with a smile, is courteous, consistent, always looking to keep their customers happy? If so, consider nominating them for an Exceptional Service Award. Nomination forms can be found on our website www.dalbychamber.com.au

David Hamilton, Chair of the Basin Sustainability Alliance addressed members and guests at the Chambers Business Before Breakfast that

is held every two months. David spoke to us about the impacts of CSG on the Environment, especially Agriculture and ground water. He also spoke about co-existence between these two main industries and recent innovations and opportunities in Agriculture.

Series 2 of the Business Capability Statement Workshops facilitated by Deb Archbold from Debra Wilson Consulting commenced on 14th April, the two remaining workshops in this series will be held 28th April and 12th May. If you’re seeking to promote your business and gain a competitive edge, contact the Chamber for further details.

(These services provided by Dalby Chamber of Commerce & Industry are funded by the Australian Government).

Our next Business After Hours function is planned for Wednesday, 7th of May at the offices of Agrifoods Australia.

Little Red Riding Hood meets Trainspotting in this wicked retelling of classic bedtime stories.

Helpmann Award winner Ursula Yovich (Australia, Jindabyne, Redfern Now, The Secret River) plays a cast of sideline female characters from traditional fairy tales such as, Cinderella’s ugly stepsister, Red Riding Hood’s Grandmother and Rapunzel’s captor, who’ve been dropped into the gutters and alleyways of bleak Australian life.

DSS Students Attend GRIP ConferenceEarly this term, our school captains and vice school captains (year 6 & 7) attended the GRIP conference in Toowoomba. The GRIP Student Leadership Conference concentrated on training student to become better school leaders. GRIP Leadership (formerly known as Impact Leadership) is an independent organisation that develop leadership groups within schools. A large number of students (over 500 participants) from the Darling Downs, South West Region attended the conference at the Highfields Cultural Centre. The conference enabled both state and independent schools to come together and develop the capacity of student leaders.

The conference promoted their Core values – Generosity, responsibility, Integrity and people – which was well received by students, staff and parents that attended the event. Students enjoyed a number of sessions that was relevant

to their leadership roles and responsibility either at school, home or within the community.

During the conference, challenges were identified and students were given practical tools to help implement solutions to the problems that school leaders may encounter. This process involves generating new ideas, effective goal setting and

implementing a simple planning method.

The conference was an excellent forum with many helpful ideas to help support and encourage student leadership.

Easter FUNDRAISER at Our Lady of the Southern Cross CollegeOur Lady of the Southern Cross College’s Mini Vinnies recently took on the challenge to raise funds for Dalby’s St Vincent de Paul chapter, to help in its vision to offer a hand up to people in need.

The Mini Vinnies arranged each of the College’s families to donate Easter eggs to the cause. These eggs were then wrapped up into 90 prize packs which were raffled, eventually raising an impressive $900.00. Prizes were presented at a College Easter liturgy on Wednesday, 2nd April.

Mini Vinnies is a group of young people to help those in need within their school and local community. It introduces children to social justice issues, to the St Vincent de Paul Society and to living faith through action. For more information, please visit www.vinnies.org.au.

Livestock BiosecurityBiosecurity is becoming a significant issue for primary producers in the Western Downs and our nation at large. Karen Huskisson of Wattle Downs Merino and Poll Merino Stud at The Gums is a Director on the Agforce Sheep and Wool Board. In this role Karen has been trained as a Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer in not only sheep and wool but all biosecurity issues that have the potential to affect primary producers. Karen has developed a broad knowledge of issues through her roles as the President of the Queensland Merino Stud Sheepbreeders Association, a member of the National Wild Dog Action Plan Committee, a delegate on the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders, a committee executive of Leading Sheep, a coordination of the Moonie Weed and Pest Group, a member of Southern Inland Queensland Regional Committee of Agforce and also the Transport Committee. These roles have given Karen a comprehensive knowledge in the issues that arise under the banner of Biosecurity and assist her in understanding all industries of primary producers.

Karen recommends that all properties should have a Biosecurity Property Plan to assist them with their personal management of any risks or hazards that have the potential to harm their livestock or business. Biosecurity hazards do not only appear as animal diseases; they can come in all shapes and forms including:

• Weeds: Vehicle access to properties can pose a threat of transferring weeds, this hazard has become more common especially with the current active oil and gas exploration where a high risk of Biosecurity issues arise with vehicles entering and exiting properties. Some properties and paddocks have been rendered unusable due to the spread of African lovegrass and other inedible grasses and weeds.

• Feral Animals: These animals can transfer catastrophic diseases to our livestock, for example: wild dogs spread diseases such as parvo, distemper and neosporum caninum which specifically causes early abortion in cattle; feral pigs can spread leptospirosis as well as acting as a carrier for various worms and other minor diseases.

• Fodder: Importing and exporting contaminated feed from properties and factories also poses a risk of transporting poisonous and inedible plants like Patterson’s curse, parthenium weed, mother of millions and stremoneum

• Straying Stock: Stock that are inadequately contained on their property of origin pose one of the greatest risks and can spread disease at a phenomenal rate while having a detrimental impact on viability of livestock production. Not only does straying stock spread lice and other contaminants; sheep pose a huge risk of contracting and spreading brucellosis which is a sexually transmitted disease causing infertility. This disease is in extreme stages in some areas of Queensland amongst the sheep industry due to the lack of containment of stock. In addition to this graziers are getting unwanted offspring affecting their breeding program and genetic gains. To prevent this you should buy your rams from a Brucellosis Accredited enterprise. Medulated fibre in merino flocks also causes a large discount to the producers’ wool as the fibre is from an exotic animal breed which must be declared on selling wool. Any exotic breed owner can be held responsible for lack of stock containment and loss of income to the merino owner.

• Transporting Stock: The importation

of stock from interstate can aid in the contraction ovinejohnes/bovinejohnes disease. It is a national regulation that all stock transported interstate must travel with a National Health Statement and sheep should travel with a Sheep Health Statement supplied by the owner or seller to the buyer. It is recommended that all purchases of livestock should check the stock entry requirements for their specific state and their role as a purchaser.

With these extras hazards posing risk to your livestock it is essential to incorporate a Biosecurity Property Plan in your management procedures to ensure the farm’s optimum viability status. Your local Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer can assist you with accessing information on contamination, disease and creating a Biosecurity Property Plan.

Karen says there are specific chains of action that must be taken should you find health status issues within your livestock. Firstly, you would need to contact your regular vet. If the vet is unable to explain the illness or if the issue is that of a biosecurity nature your vet must contact the Principal Veterinary Officer who will then inform the Chief Veterinary Officer of Queensland. From here you can be put in contact with your local Biosecurity Industry Liaison Officer who can assist with facilitation of communication and explanation between the authorities and you as the farmer on a confidential basis.

Should you need more information you can access the Livestock Biosecurity Network online at www.lbn.org.au or contact Biosecurity Queensland in the Department of Forestry and Fisheries in Toowoomba.

Keep calm & talk to your accountantAs the weather turns cooler and the leaves change colour, the excitement is building at the BMO Business Centre in Dalby. It’s tax time again!

Not everyone enjoys tax time as much as the accountants at BMO, so Partner Adrian Rasmussen has put together these top three tips to help you survive the final quarter of 2013-14 and avoid any nasty surprises after 30 June.

See your accountant. It might sound obvious, but it still surprises us that some business owners don’t see their accountant before the end of June. You should be seeing your accountant in May to review your predicted tax position. When 1 July hits, it is too late. Over the years we have saved clients thousands and thousands of dollars with legitimate strategies to minimise tax liability.

Get Super advice. With the pension age set to rise to 67 in 2023 (and talk of it going up to 70), there’s no guarantee that we’ll have pension payments in the future, and life expectancy continuing to rise, we need to be investing for our futures. Superannuation has had a bad rap over the years, but remember it’s not Superannuation itself that is bad, it’s the failed investments that have been made inside Superannuation that have caused the trouble. Superannuation is a really effective structure and you can use for high or low risk investments. That said, tax time is the perfect time to talk to your financial planner and accountant about your super as it can be an essential part of your tax planning.

Get organised. If you haven’t kept all your records up to date during the year, now is the time to get your bookkeeping program (like QuickBooks) ship-shape. If you find entering data too time consuming and mistyped figures drive you crazy, talk to your accountant about streamlining with BankLink. This system securely takes the

information straight from your bank statement, so there’s no need to enter all the data. You can also set up the program to memorise transactions so regular payments are coded automatically for you.

While tax time can be stressful, communicating with your accountant regularly is an important way to keep calm and enjoy closing of another

financial year.

Spotlight On Castor OilLast month I discussed dangers of synthetic preservatives in our food and personal care products and the links they have with illnesses and diseases. I also talked about the benefits of using certified organic products and how small changes can really prolong your life and benefit your health. If you missed this column, then you can find a copy of it on the Western Downs Magazine website in the April edition of the Dalby & District Magazine.

This month, we put the spotlight on castor oil, one of the best kept secrets in the world of natural cosmetics and beauty products. A key ingredient a number of the personal care products, castor oil is a deep skin healer and contains strong therapeutic qualities. Sometimes used to assist in pregnancy, castor oil has a bit of a sour reputation as a result of its taste and mouth feel, which is said to be like drinking a thick oil, or even vaseline.

Thankfully, there are other options if you don’t want to swallow it! But you will have to put it on your skin. Castor oil is one of the key ingredients in some lip glosses because of its fantastic healing and rejuvenating properties.

Here are five very good reasons why it pays to apply it to your skin:

1. Because it has a low molecular weight, castor oil is easily absorbed into the skin, helping to nourish and moisturise. It is particularly effective when it comes to the prevention and treatment of wrinkles.

2. Castor oil has been used for thousands of years as a face cream to help reduce dark under-eye circles.

3. It is rich in ricinoleic acid, a powerful antimicrobial agent which can help fight skin infections, as well as aid in the healing of minor cuts and scratches.

4. Ricinoleic acid also possesses pain relieving properties. This makes castor oil ideal for the treatment of arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions, as it can help lubricate

joints, reduce pain and increase circulation.

Because it is easily absorbed, castor oil has the ability to reach the deeper organs of the body. For this reason, it has long been used by ayurvedic practitioners to help break down blockages leading to water retention and weight gain.

Colds & FluCommon colds are respiratory tract infections caused by viruses. Medicines can relieve symptoms, but cannot cure the common cold. A vaccine and some antiviral medicines can protect against influenza. Antibiotics are not effective against these viral infections.

Cold symptoms include:

• Dry or sore throat which may develop a day or so before other symptoms.

• Runny nose which is clear and watery at first, then thicker.• Blocked nose (nasal congestion)• Headache• Sneezing and cough

Flu symptoms are similar to cold symptoms, but are usually more severe. Flu also causes fever and sore aching muscles and joints.

People can develop more serious infections while they are ill with a cold or flu. This include a middle ear infection, sinusitis, bronchitis or pneumonia.

Some self care tips for you while you are feeling unwell:• Get plenty of rest• Drink at least eight glasses of water each day• Eat a balanced, healthy diet• Cover a cough or a sneeze with a tissue• Wash hands regularly• Do not smoke as this makes symptoms worse

For all your cold and flu requirements please call in and ask for help from one of the friendly staff at The Dalby & District Friendly Society Dispensary Ltd.

Doctor encourages people to vaccinate against influenzaWith early indications predicting a dire influenza season, Darling Downs Public Health Unit director Doctor Penny Hutchinson is urging all people to receive this year’s influenza vaccination.

Dr Hutchinson said predications were based on flu activity in the Northern Hemisphere during the past winter, and the number of flu cases seen this year in Queensland.

“People aged between 20 and 64 years have been identified as the group most likely to succumb to the flu this year,” Dr Hutchinson said.

“People mistakenly think that if they are healthy, then they can’t get very sick from the flu.

“But the flu is a highly contagious and potentially serious disease that can spread through coughing and sneezing.

“Already this year in Queensland we have seen

hospitalisations from the flu.”

The federal government provides free vaccinations to the following groups of people.

Indigenous people aged over 15 years, pregnant women, people aged over 65 years and people aged over six months who have a chronic medical condition.

“This year, free vaccinations will also be provided to people who have Downs Syndrome, who are obese (a body mass index greater than 30) and people who drink heavily,” Dr Hutchinson said.

“However, we encourage all people to receive the flu vaccination, not just those deemed ‘at risk’.

“By receiving the flu vaccination, you not only protect yourself against illness, you protect those around you.”

The Darling Downs Public Health Unit also

launched its Tackle Flu Before It Gets You campaign, aimed at vaccinating Indigenous people aged over 15 years, on March 25.

The campaign will visit 10 locations across the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service and the South West in March and April.

My Midwives Rural Outreach Darling DownsMy Midwives is a Midwifery Group Practice based in Toowoomba. We opened in December of 2010 as the first practice of its kind in Australia. We provide antenatal care and postnatal care in the community and labour and birth care at Toowoomba Hospital where we have admitting rights. All our midwives are able to order pathology and diagnostics and many are able to prescribe. We provide two main

services – continuity of midwifery care where a woman sees the same midwife throughout the continuum from early pregnancy to six weeks after birth with the midwife on call for labour and birth care and a bulk billed services where a team of midwives provides the care.

The My Midwives Rural Outreach – Darling Downs project has been funded by Medicare Local. The

program will provide antenatal and postnatal care in three areas – Millmerran, Inglewood and Chinchilla in conjunction with medical care of the woman’s choice if required or desired

Can I have my cataracts treated with a laser?

The use of Femtosecond laser or “bladeless” cataract surgery was first performed in Hungary in 2008 and more recently in Australia in 2011. There are currently very few ophthalmology practices who utilize this technology in Queensland.

The laser does not replace the need for surgical procedure to remove the opacified lens in the eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens. However,

it does provide for more predictable surgical incisions and reduces the amount of time for the hands-on component of the procedure.

While there are plenty of additional implied benefits of this new technology, more research is required to confirm these benefits compared to conventional cataract surgery. At this stage, the evidence suggests that the use of laser in cataract

surgery appears at least as safe as conventional procedures.

If I had a cataract, I would certainly be investigating this option.
