TheDirector’sLog

Ever since first working with IHDC nearly two years ago on panto, I have felt that “Daisy Pulls it Off” would be an ideal play for the group. There are a large number of roles and the characters are very clearly drawn. Daisy also gives the cast the opportunity to play with RP (received pronunciation) which for many years was the standard at the BBC and which is still required in many theatrical settings.

I have been particularly impressed with the way the cast have worked with the different movement qualities of the characters and have tried to change their own natural speed of movement to be more in keeping with the characters portrayed. My family and I are moving to Cambridge in September and so this has been a particularly good way of finishing off our time with a group whose good humour and enthusiasm have made them a joy to work with.

A special mention should be made here of the younger members of the cast who, with very little to do in this particular play have come down week after week, taken part when required and occupied themselves quietly when not. Danae, Delphi and Greg were given a free hand with set and design and construction and I know you will agree have done us proud.

Thanks also go to the mums who were on hand

with refreshments, first aid, comfort and tuck

shop; the inimitable James who dashed around

putting up and taking down lights and created

the design, Terry and Les who helped the production team with

their experience, knowledge and not occasionally strength, and my

right-hand man Matthew Streuli who dealt with all the boring stuff

and let me do the fun bits of moving people around the stage and

creating what will be I hope, for all of you, a really fun evening’s

entertainment.

Jo Leeds was a very active member of our club in the 80s and 90s. Here she tells us about the first time Daisy came to IHDC Every girl who has ever read Enid Blyton's books about "The Naughtiest Girl" or "The Twins at St Clare's" will understand the nostalgia that this play brings for "Midnight Feasts, lashings of Ginger Beer and adventures when the mistresses are supposed to be tucked up in bed"! It is also one of the few plays which has a larger cast for females than males making it, from a Director's point of view, easier to cast.

I was part of the Ginger Beer brigade some twenty years ago when IHDC last performed this classic. My main memory of this period was the great fun we had as a cast particularly choreographing the hockey match. The script, which is so clearly written, ensures everyone can get into character from the first read through. I have fond memories of being Winnie the lisping second former.

I know the current cast and audience have as much fun as we did
