OverviewThe dairy industry in India has been on a steady path of progression since Indian independence. India the world's largest milk producer, accounts for around 20 percent of global milk production, with most of it consumed domestically. In India, about 60 percent of milk is consumed in liquid form, while the remaining 40 per cent is used in the form of butter, clarified butter (Desi ghee), cheese, curd, paneer, ice cream, dairy whiteners and traditional sweets.

The Indian dairy sector is characterized by high fragmentation. “Growing at about 10 percent annually, the Indian dairy industry is predominantly controlled by the unorganized sector, which accounts for nearly 85 percent constituting an important segment of the Indian rural economy." The per capita availability of milk in India stands at 289.4 grams per day. Backed by strong domestic demand, the per capita availability of milk is anticipated to reach 336 grams per day in FY2017.

All these facts and figures vouch for India`s big potential to increase consumption of dairy products in domestic markets and target for exports. Despite all of these achievements, lack of advanced technology, inadequate cold storage facilities and processing equipment, particularly at the farm level, act as a major constraint in enabling this sector to take a quantum jump in production and productivity. What is needed is a strong platform for all stakeholders to share knowledge and technology.

Some of the challenges that Indian dairy industry will have to face include viz., clean milk production, preservation of raw milk, adoption of newer processing methods, mechanization of indigenous dairy based products, new product development with value-addition, cost reduction of dairy products, shelf life extension of perishable foods, storage and packaging technologies, promoting export of dairy products, energy saving, environment-friendly effluent treatment methods, reducing carbon foot print and so on.

Keeping in view of the above, CII & APTDC in association with National Dairy Research Institute, ICAR, Government of India and National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), ICAR, Government of India are organizing this International Conference & Exposition on Dairy in Vijayawada to foster investments & tapping new business opportunities by bringing new innovations to the sector along and exploring possibilities to increase export and strengthen global food security. Since, Andhra Pradesh is one of the leading milk producing state in the country.

The technical sessions will cover the following major areas related to:

1. Clean milk production.

2. Buffalo milk based dairy products.

3. Development in Dairy Equipment and Machinery.

4. Mechanization for the production of Indigenous and Western dairy products.

5. Challenges confronted with regard to Quality and Safety monitoring in Dairy Industry.

6. Innovative Packaging and Marketing.
