DAIOS PLASTICS SA www.daiosplastics.com PLASTIC 00 THE INDUSTRIOUS PUBLICATION ISSUE 0 l 2012 www.industriouspublication.com Daios Plastics SA is a specialist plastics company providing innovative products for agricultural cultivation and protection. Founded in 1974 by Mr Daios as a manufacturer of plastic bags, the company now principally produces sheet plastic as a film. Daios Plastics prides itself on its unique approach; targeting niche markets and winning contracts with ‘smart’ solutions. This has been a successful strategy for 35 years; inspiring immense customer confidence and earning the company a reputation for creative solutions. Jeff Galliers reviews the company in the following article. COVERING the Future D aios Plastics has grown organically from its inception in the 1970s; achieving an annual turnover of €14.5 million in 2011. Based in primarily agricultural surroundings, the company and its workforce have a fundamental understanding of the needs of the farming community. This understanding has enabled the company to offer crops; it provides a cooler daytime environment, whilst raising night time temperatures by two to four degrees centigrade. This prevents the crop’s foliage scorching from strong sunlight and also protects the plant from ‘frost shock’ during very low overnight temperatures. Today, Dalin® has been considerably refined and is offered in several varieties. The product features innovations such as pockets; these allow farmers to fill the pockets with soil to anchor the sheet to the ground without the need for expensive and unwieldy pegs. Furthermore, the film developed for asparagus allows the plant to be cultivated earlier in the season and can improve crop yields by as much as 15 percent. In 1988, Daios Plastics entered into a collaborative project with the Israeli company Plastro Gvat. The project sought to provide a solution to a complex irrigation problem; this culminated in the development of a self-regulating drip pipe, which provided an unmonitored, reliable water supply. As a consequence, the successful venture led to another important alliance in 2010; this time with the multinational company John Deere Water. Working with John Deere Water has opened new opportunities and reinforced the market share in the Balkans for both companies. Daios Plastics welcomes partnerships of this nature. The collaborations inspire more creative thinking; producing design revisions and innovations that might never have happened otherwise. In addition, these partnerships offer an introduction into new market places and opportunities. Research and development is also integral to achieving further market presence. Mr Tsakiris is very proud of the work done by the company’s research and development department; with 25 patents, the company averages a new patent every other year. Communication with various research institutions around the world is ongoing; providing an impetus to the development of new materials and products. In evaluating the various sectors that comprise the company, Mr Tsakiris described the research and development sector as ‘lying on the top’; providing the driving force for the company’s success. Investment and Diversification Mr Tsakiris suggests that we are all facing, ‘probably the biggest economical crisis the modern world has ever seen’. As a Greek company, he admits that Daios Plastics is operating in ‘a tough financial system’; however the intelligent solutions for some of the more obscure farming challenges. One such product is WPC or Wood Polymer Composite; this material is a mixture of vegetable material and plastic, comprised of up to 80 percent ‘wood’. WPC is completely recyclable, with the ‘wood’ or vegetable fibre being recovered from agricultural waste.

The ability to recycle this material is extremely important to Daios Plastics; the company claims to produce zero waste and is proud of its ecological responsibility. The environment is as important to Daios Plastics as it is to its customers. Currently the company is engaged in communication with a variety of institutions; its goal is to find a solution to a problem Mr Tsakiris describes as ‘optical waste’. Beyond the issue of environmental protection as most people understand it; Daios Plastics is seeking to minimise the aesthetic impact its plastics have on the landscape. This desire to prevent ‘visual pollution’ is an indication of how seriously the company takes its responsibilities.

Export and StrategyMr Tsakiris describes the company as ‘extrovert’; referring in part to its many collaborative projects, it also addresses the company’s significant export market. Daios Plastics has been exporting since the 1980s; 65 percent of production is delivered to Western Europe, primarily

France, Germany, Holland and the UK. However the company enjoys markets as far-a-field as Japan and South Africa; producing solutions to penetrate new markets, whilst also developing its existing customer base.

The strong relationships Daios Plastics enjoys with its customers are the product of the company’s business ethics; listening to its customers needs, no matter how large or small the project. Daios Plastics adopts the concept of a ‘total project’; identifying specific needs, implementing its solutions and providing

all the necessary training required to make it successful. Mr Tsakiris was keen to point out that ‘We [Daios Plastics] don’t implement a sell-and-leave philosophy’. The company maintains on-going communication with its clients; providing support and drawing inspiration for future projects. Mr Tsakiris described the company’s motto as ‘We never stand still’; embracing both innovation and diversification, Daios Plastics anticipates growth during this difficult financial period and greater success for the future.

company is dealing with this accordingly. Demonstrating the same innovative approach it uses for its farming solutions; Daios Plastics has invested almost €170 million, primarily in the tourism industry, within the past five years.

The company now owns two hotel units; one, the Daios Luxury Living complex, is based in Thessaloniki, within walking distance of the town centre’s landmark, the White Tower. The second is situated at Daios Cove in Crete; commanding spectacular views and overlooking its own private beach. Both hotels are five star establishments and represent a major diversification, and as Mr Tsakiris points out, ‘the company [now] possesses three profit centres’.

Responsible DevelopmentAlongside this diversification, Daios Plastics is poised to release two new agricultural products. These are anticipated to further boost sales in the next few years. The company is further developing its stretch hood products; focusing on rain protection across a variety of delicate crops. Whilst continuing to maximise the performance of existing films, Daios Plastics is also engaged in developing new products.
