2012 was a year which presented the whole bus and coach industry with major challenges. In Europe, the market was at its lowest level for twenty years and in Latin America the introduction of Euro V caused the markets to shrink. Additionally, adverse exchange rate developments further hindered our business. At Daimler Buses we responded to these challenges: with our GLOBE2013 growth and efficiency initiative, we have made ourselves fit for the future. We have reorganised our sales division, providing firm worldwide market support and international customer care for large fleets, and we have even created our own sales organisation for Germany. These are all examples of the concrete measures which we have taken. Thus we are in a position to respond even better to the needs and wants of our customers, as well as satisfy the higher requirements for sustainable mobility.But above all, our focus is on our products. We have once again invested large amounts in research and development. The very notion that driving pleasure and comfort are compatible with reduced fuel consumption and a reduction in emissions is reflected by our entire product portfolio. The fact that our new Mercedes-Benz Citaro was the first Euro VI version of any standard regular-service bus to win the “Bus of the Year 2013” award also confirms this. In the touring coach segment, our Setra ComfortClass 500 – the first touring coach to be completely developed to meet the Euro VI emissions standard – was complemented by the addition of the TopClass 500 in the premium segment, completely in keeping with our belief that there is no limit to comfort, safety or efficiency. In Europe, further Euro VI models are also on the cards. We are the first manufacturer to offer our entire range in versions which conform to the Euro VI emissions standard, which will be legally binding from 2014. We are introducing new pro- ducts from the Mercedes-Benz chassis family to international markets. So, as you can see: our products set standards in all things quality, design, environmental friendliness and economy. We are actively, and above all sustainably, improving passenger transport. We are well equipped for the future.

Shaping Future TransportationDaimler Trucks and Daimler Buses are forging ahead with measures to significantly reduce the fuel consumption and the CO2 and pol-lutant emissions of their vehicles. The world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer is consolidating these activities in its global “Shaping Future Transportation” initiative. The initiative actively incorporates the brands Mercedes-Benz, Setra, Freightliner, Fuso, Thomas Built Buses, Western Star, and BharatBenz.Daimler’s development path extends from clean conventional fuels such as gasoline and diesel to natural gas and hybrid drives as well as hydrogen for vehicles with fuel cell drives. More than 880,000 Daimler commercial vehicles with SCR technology are currently on the road around the world. In addition, the new Setra ComfortClass BlueTec6 celebrated its world premiere at last year’s IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover. Like the Mercedes-Benz Travego and Citaro travel coaches and buses, the Setra ComfortClass BlueTec6 already complies with the Euro VI emissions standard that will become mandatory in January 2014. A completely new generation of engines and a sophisticated exhaust gas treatment system reduce emissions to barely traceable levels and thus constitute another major step forward in the development of diesel technology. The fuel efficiency of the new Mercedes-Benz Citaro BlueTec6 is boosted further by an innovative 24-volt energy recovery module. Thanks to this system, electricity produced by the generator during coasting is stored in the double-layer capacitors and used to provide energy when the bus is accelerating.

Daimler is the global leader for “green” commercial vehicles, having delivered a total of about 18,000 alternative drive vehicles through the end of last year.1) Hybrid technology plays a key role in these vehicles, as it reduces diesel consumption by up to one third, depen-ding on the application. The hybrid product lineup of Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses is unmatched anywhere in the world, ranging from Fuso and Freightliner brand vehicles to hybrid commercial vehicles bearing the Mercedes star.

Further expansion of activitiesThrough the end of 2012, Daimler Buses had delivered a total of 62 Mercedes-Benz Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid articulated buses, which are used in regular service operations in cities including Hamburg, Krefeld, Mülheim/Ruhr, Stuttgart, Rotterdam, and Milan. The Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid is to date the only hybrid bus that can cover extended stretches while running solely on electricity, without using the diesel engine.The extremely economical Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid generates zero local emissions; that puts it at the forefront of su-stainable mobility. Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HH) has acquired four Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrids for Germany’s NaBuZ demo project (German abbreviation for “Sustainable Bus System of the Future – Demonstration”). In May 2012, five additional vehicles were delivered to PostAuto Schweiz AG, which uses them for local public transportation services in the Swiss canton of Aargau. The Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid has many new features which are not found in the fuel cell buses that have been tested in Hamburg since 2003. Among them is a hybrid system with energy recovery and storage in lithium-ion batteries, high-performance electric motors with 120 kW of sustained output in the wheel hubs, electric ancillary components, and enhanced fuel cells. These features extend the service life of the vehicles to at least six years or 12,000 hours of operation. Thanks to improved fuel cell components and hybridization with lithium-ion batteries, the new Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid consumes almost 50 percent less hydrogen than the predecessor generation.

Another factor contributing to Shaping Future Transportation is the innovative Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. With BRT, buses operate in separate dedicated lanes, which ensures the fast and efficient transport of large numbers of passengers. In this way, BRT can in- expensively make optimal use of the available road network while at the same time substantially reducing the emissions produced per passenger and kilometer.

Along with other active assistance systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), the Lane Assistant (SPA), the Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL), Brake Assist (BA), and the ART proximity cruise control system, Active Brake Assist underscores Daimler’s technology leadership in the field of active safety.

Daimler also sets the tone when it comes to passive safety. In 2007, for example, the company reached a milestone in passive safety for buses with the introduction of Front Collision Guard (FCG). This system provides maximum protection for drivers and passengers of travel coaches, and also offers protection to the occupants of other vehicles by preventing them from being forced under an FCG-equipped vehicle in the event of a collision. The essential elements of FCG are an integrated absorber structure and a front module, which upon impact moves the entire driver’s area — including the seat, steering wheel, and pedals — backwards by as much as 20 centimeters. This offers a previously unheard-of level of safety for the driver and the passengers, while also underscoring the fact that buses are the safest means of passenger transport.

Buses from Mercedes-Benz and Setra are leaders in active and passive safety worldwide.Various independent studies have found that vehicles equipped with active safety systems are less likely to be involved in accidents than those without such systems. In combination with standard-fitted safety systems, such additional measures can both actively and passively prevent accidents leading to damage and injury.Another preventive measure are the courses in safe driving that are offered to bus drivers.

A pioneer in active and passive safety For more than 50 years, developments from Daimler have been leading the way in the field of vehicle safety. Such developments can be divided into active and passive safety elements.

One example of an active safety system is the multiple award- winning Active Brake Assist (ABA) feature, whose introduction in 2007 expanded the range of highly efficient assistance systems for active accident prevention. The system goes into action when- ever there is imminent danger of a collision with a vehicle ahead that is moving more slowly and the driver fails to react to this situation. After issuing several phased warnings, the assistant automatically initiates an emergency braking maneuver, thereby actively working to prevent rear-end collisions and helping to save lives.

ABA has been available in Mercedes-Benz trucks since 2006 and in Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand travel coaches since 2008. Since April 2012, travel coaches have been fitted with Active Brake Assist 2 (ABA 2), which independently initiates emergency braking if the vehicle is about to hit a stationary obstacle.

Expanded product range for Western Europe. Midyear, Mer- cedes-Benz added the Intouro regular-service bus to its product range for Western Europe. Since the vehicle’s market launch in 2007, the bus has clearly demon-strated its worth by selling more than 3,500 Intouros in France and Portugal as well as many Central and Eastern European countries. Daimler Buses is expanding its product range in response to strong shifts in demand in this price-sensitive segment.

» July 2012 World premiere of the Setra ComfortClass 500. The new Setra ComfortClass 500 travel coach celebrated its world premiere at two major international events at the Stuttgart exhibition center. Besides boasting great eco- nomy, comfort, safety, and value, the new travel coaches already meet future legal requirements.

Singapore transit authority places a major order for 450 Mercedes-Benz city buses. The Mercedes star will soon be seen even more often on the streets of Singapore. Daimler Buses has once again received a major order from this city-state and will deliver 450 Citaro buses to Southeast Asia between the fall of 2012 and the end of 2015.

» August 2012 Daimler Buses closes a major order for more than 150 buses from DB Fleet Management GmbH. Beginning in 2013, the Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand urban and intercity buses will be gradually delivered to Germany’s largest bus trans-port provider.

» February 2012 Major order from Istanbul. The Istanbul public transport company IETT orders a total of 221 Merce-des-Benz Conecto articulated buses from Mercedes-Benz Türk. The 18-meter-long low-floor buses are manufactured in the Mercedes-Benz bus plant in Hoşdere near Istanbul.

» March 2012 Launch of the growth and efficiency offen-sive GLOBE2013. This program encompasses Daimler Buses’ entire value chain and all of its locations. One of the program’s aims is to interlink the European production network even more strongly. The German production sites in Mannheim and Neu-Ulm are becoming even more competitive and will remain an integral part of the network. Moreover, GLOBE2013 utilizes existing growth potential in traditional markets and helps to boost business in new markets.

First Euro VI-compliant travel coach delivered. The Swedish bus company Lidbergs Bus AB buys the first Euro VI-compliant travel coach in Europe. The 90-year-old company received its first Travego Edition 1 coach in March. The vehicle is equipped with the OM 471 engine (one of

a series of BlueEfficiency Power engines), the newly developed GO 250-8 transmission, addi-tional safety features, and an ergonomically upgraded cockpit.

» May 2012 Start of series production for a clean regular-service bus. At the Mannheim plant, the launch of series pro-duction of the Euro VI-compliant Citaro bus opens up a new chapter in the history of regular-service buses. With this step, Mercedes-Benz takes the lead with regard to environmentally friendly buses. The first customer to buy the Euro VI-compliant Citaro is the Hessian capital of Wiesbaden.

» June 2012 Mercedes-Benz articulated buses for Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian metropo-lis adopts Daimler’s innovative Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) mobility concept. Rio de Janeiro plans to invest in a BRT system extending about 150 kilometers in order to be able to handle the increased mobility needs during the next Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. For the network’s first stretch, which goes into operation in June, Mer- cedes-Benz do Brasil supplies the city with 90 articulated buses featuring BlueTec 5 technology.

Highlights 2012. » September 2012 Merce- des-Benz Citaro is “Bus of the Year 2013”. The Mercedes-Benz Citaro Euro VI prevails convincin- gly in an international comparison. It impresses with its high effi- ciency and its striking design and sets new benchmarks in comfort and safety.

» October 2012 Mercedes-Benz at the FIAA Madrid. A new generation of Euro VI bus chas-sis was presented at the FIAA fair in Madrid. Thus, the Euro VI in the chassis segment portfolio has also been completed.

Record Run Buses 2012: Euro VI makes economic sense. Five coaches of the new Comfort Class 500 and the new Citaro covered a distance of 18 000 km in five days and demonstrated a significantly lower fuel consump-tion with Euro VI.

» November 2012 Budapest places major order. Hungary’s capital Budapest ordered a total of 159 Mercedes-Benz Citaro of the new generation, with first delivery already starting in the first Quarter of 2013.

Another major order in Brazil.Mercedes-Benz do Brasil pro-vides a total of 2,600 chassis of the type OF 1519 R for the Brazi- lian Ministry of Education which will be assembled to school buses in cooperation with the Brazilian bodybuilder Caio.
