As I write, the nation seems to be in

the grips of a major crisis, as the

news spreads that the Great British

Bake-off is moving to Channel Four,

and, what’s more, Mel and Sue won’t be moving with it.

I have to admit that my knowledge

of baking a cake is severely limited.

I once set out, determinedly, to

make my first cinnamon and apple cake from memory, and I forgot to

add the eggs.

I learned from that experience that,

whatever the cake, certain basic

ingredients are always required, and

these ingredients seem to be flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and a hot oven.

Similarly, the Great British Bake-off

seems to be based on a winning

recipe. For a successful outcome it

requires Mary and Paul, Mel and Sue, and a number of excited and

committed new bakers.

Thanks to this combination the cur-

rent series is motoring along splen-

didly; but the big question being

discussed throughout the land is not so much whether it will still be

whether it will survive

without

two of its essential ingredients?

It’s the same when it comes to our

faith. Everybody is different, which

means that everybody experiences

faith in different ways, yet there are certain ingredients which are essen-

tial – a belief in Jesus as God’s son,

an acceptance that he died for us

on the cross, and an openness to his Spirit’s power working in us and

through us.

These words, taken from a letter he wrote to a friend, are how Paul tries to sum it up . . .

When God our Saviour

revealed his kindness and

love, he saved us, not

because of the righteous

things we had done, but because of his mercy. He

washed away our sins, giving

us a new birth and new life

through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the

Spirit upon us through Jesus

Christ our Saviour. Because

of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us

confidence that we will

inherit eternal life.

(Titus 3.4-7)

4th October is the feast day of St

Francis of Assisi. When Francis came to God people thought he had gone mad and even his own father dis-owned him. But Francis’ simple way of life soon attracted others. He and his companions went out to preach two by two. Unlike the preachers and priests that people were used to, they wore sackcloth and went barefoot. They were different in other ways too; they lived a very simple life and celebrated God’s creation. And to Francis all of God's creation was equally important. In one famous story a wolf had been eating people. The town wanted to kill the wolf but Francis talked the wolf into never kill-ing again. And the townspeople made sure that the wolf always had plenty to eat. Even blindness did not discourage Francis’ spirit when he wrote his beau-tiful ‘Canticle of the Sun’ praising God through the miracle of His creation. Francis died aged only 45, worn out with years of poverty and wandering.

How do you make a paper fish swim? Cut a fish shape from a sheet of ordinary writing paper. Make it 10-12cm long, and decorate it making sure that the colours won’t run when the fish gets wet. In the centre of the fish’s body cut a small circle and then a very narrow slit from the

gently lay the fish on the surface of a bath or large bowl of water and carefully place a few drops of cooking oil into the central hole. The oil will expand through the slit and drive the fish through the water.

It is that time of year again when we start thinking about the Blythswood Shoebox Appeal, and the preparation of the shoe boxes. We are confident that, as in previ-ous years, we will have a great response from everyone. Each person who receives a box filled with gifts feels very special, and knows that someone filled it with gifts (which include a hat and scarf, toothpaste and tooth-

choice between buying either food or fuel at Christmas, and where buying presents is not the greatest priority. A lot of these families live in houses with no running water, electricity or heating, and have to live in one or two rooms.The leaflets that have to accompany the shoe boxes will be at

both sides of the church on the welcome desks, and in the halls. There will also be a box for any spare wool you may have, and patterns for the hats and toys. This box will be in the halls from September.These leaflets will give you suggestions of what to put in the boxes as well as all the instructions. There will also be a box in the foyer for donations which you might like to give, if you are unable to fill a shoebox. Any contributions will be gratefully accepted. If you have any empty shoe boxes that you wish to contribute these would also be very welcome, and should be left beside the box.

Choir rehearsals for the Lessons and Carols Service on Wednes-day 21st December will begin on Tuesday 15th November for six weeks. Anybody who would like to sing in a four-part choir is welcome to come along on the 15th to the Wilson Hall (upstairs) at 7.45pm. As we move through this part of the year, and our time of LOOKING OUTWARD, we are following the 10 themes taken by our Sunday morning services over these
