Before You BeginSetting up your Daily Language Station is easy! Simplycut apart the cards along the dotted lines and group themby topic. (The cards are color-coded to make this task easy.)

Note: Be sure to use only dry-erase markers on the write &wipe cards. To prevent ink from beading, prime the cardsby drawing on them with a dry-erase marker, and thenerase by rubbing vigorously with a dry textured cloth orpaper towel. Repeat if necessary. Remember to wipe awayany markings left on the cards before putting them away.Do not allow markings to remain overnight.

Getting StartedWe suggest you begin by responding to a card with thewhole class. Display a card and invite a volunteer to readthe question. Then, discuss the concept involved.Encourage students to share their ideas on the board orchart paper. The cards are write & wipe, so you can alsocircle key words or information to help students under-stand the concept.

Once students understand how the cards work, there aremany ways to use the Daily Language Station in yourclassroom. For example:

• Set the station in your language center with a questionto be answered. Have students rotate through the centerduring the day.

2

• Display a question for the whole class to answer. Haveeveryone work on it together, or have students workindependently or in small groups. Set a time to shareand discuss students’ responses.

• Put 5 different cards in the pocket chart. Have studentsanswer the questions as a morning warm-up, or promptthem to respond to the questions when they havefinished their work.

• Encourage students to respond to the questions in theirjournals. Review the journals periodically for assessmentpurposes, or have students respond on separate piecesof paper and hand them in. (An answer key begins onpage 4 of this guide.)

Meeting Individual NeedsELL: In a small group, discuss any unfamiliar vocabularyfrom the question card. Prompt students to write thewords in their journals and add illustrations or definitionsfor reference. Invite them to respond to the questions intheir native languages if necessary.

Reteach/Extra Support: Have students work with partners, taking turns reading and responding to preselectedquestions.

Challenge: Once students are familiar with a concept, invite them to create additional question cards to add tothe set.
