A busy summer for Portsmouth’s lifeboat volunteers

Aaron Gent from RNLI Portsmouth reflects back on the past few months and lets us know what’s in store for the rest of the year During the spring the Portsmouth Atlantic 85 Class Lifeboat Norma T returned to station after an extensive winter upgrade. Early on in the summer, both Portsmouth Lifeboats were requested to launch in the middle of the night, to search for a pair of elderly gentlemen who had not returned after launching several hours earlier, taking a

dinghy out to retrieve their moored vessel. The duo came into difficulty when the boat’s engine failed to start, leaving them adrift. Both lifeboats launched around 12.30am and after about 30 minutes of searching the gentlemen and vessel were found clinging to the side of the Langstone harbour board’s boat being pulled towards the mouth of the harbour. In June, both boats were requested to assist a father and son who had become stranded, after getting caught out by a fast falling tide. The rescue operation saw the lifeboats work alongside a specialist Coastguard mud unit to recover the pair across more than 100 metres of sticky Langstone Harbour mud. In July the America’s Cup World Series came to Southsea and the Portsmouth and Bembridge Lifeboats were proud to be part of the event. They spent four days giving displays and patrolling the waters, ensuring the race and spectator areas were kept safe and to provide a quick response for any potential incidents. the RNLI Portsmouth Lifeboat Station’s 50th anniversary ball will take place on Friday, November 27.Last year’s Christmas ball raised over £5,000 for charity and this year we hope that you can join us to make this an evening to remember. Tickets are £75 per person and are available via Facebook – search for Portsmouth Lifeboat Station – e-mail

[email protected] or call 07850 787 146. Carols with the RNLI will be on Sunday, December 6 at 3pm at the Anglican Cathedral in Old Portsmouth. A family service of readings and carols for everyone in the presence of the Ports-mouth Lifeboat Volunteer crew. Portsmouth RNLI Santa 5km and 10km fun runs will take place on Sunday, December 13 at 11am. Visit fitprorob.biz for more details and to book a place for the runs. Source : Portsmouth-The News

New database open for HELCOM protected areas in the Baltic Sea

Easier access to more detailed information on coastal and marine Baltic Sea protected areas (HELCOM MPAs) will be available for anyone by today's launch of the modernized HELCOM MPA database. As there are currently already 174 HELCOM MPAs covering 12% of the marine area, making the Baltic Sea a pioneering region, a more sophisticated search function as well as map interface are important improvements to the database. New data sections have also been added: information on human pressures to MPAs, such as damage to seabed or input of sound, and regulated human activities, such as aquaculture, tourism or urban developments. Information details added in the database concern threat categories and monitoring of species, biotopes and biotope complexes within HELCOM MPAs. Another practical feature is direct links which have been added for each MPA to other relevant databases such as Natura 2000, OSPAR, Important Bird Areas (Birdlife), World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and Ramsar. The HELCOM MPA database is among the first ones where information on several management plans can be displayed for one MPA, which fits a clear need as many of these MPAs have several management plans established for different purposes. Another new feature in the database is information about national protection status, which is important for understanding the different legal aspects provided by overlapping national protection networks. Moreover, HELCOM MPA database stands out among other similar databases on regional and global levels, particularly since the information is current and has a vast coverage. HELCOMs persistent work on coastal and marine Baltic Sea protected areas will now continue as the assessment of ecological coherence of MPAs is expecting release early next year. The assessment of ecological coherence is made possible through the information compiled in the MPA database. Source : Portnews

October 31. Jennifer Vandekreeke, Vice President of Carnival Cruise Line Austalia, gave the following statement: “As an American cruise line, we could be accused of going a bit OTT with Halloween. It’s a big event across our 24-ship fleet – including our Australian-based superliners Carnival Spirit and Carnival Legend – and we wanted to share some of that frightful fun with Sydneysiders by doing something big that screamed Aussie Halloween.”Carnival Spirit is a 2,100 passenger, 86,000 gross ton cruise ship that went into service in April, 2001. The ship is currently on an eight night cruise to the Melbourne Cup out of Sydney. Source : Cruisefever

NOL reports 3Q 2015 net loss of US$96 million NOL today reported a 3Q 2015 net loss of US$96 million, compared to a net loss of US$23 million in 3Q 2014. The Group posted a third quarter 2015 Core EBIT loss (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes and Non-Recurring Items) of US$66 million, versus a Core EBIT of US$21 million in the same quarter last year. NOL’s Core EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation) in 3Q 2015 was US$21 million, compared to US$114 million in the same period last year. NOL’s cost savings program yielded US$80 million in 3Q 2015, bringing its total year-to-date cost savings to US$335 million. In 3Q 2015, APL, NOL’s container shipping business, reported a revenue decline of 29% to US$1.2b versus the same quarter last year. APL’s average freight rates fell 21% amidst pressure from over-capacity in the industry. Volume contracted 11%, which APL attributed to various reasons, including a significant drop in U.S. exports and weak demand in the Intra-Asia short-sea market. APL also voided sailings in response to weak global demand and trimmed capacity in unprofitable trade lanes. APL was able to maintain a high headhaul utilisation of above 90%.APL maintained its rigorous cost management as well as a yield-focused trade strategy that emphasises network rationalisation and better cargo selection. Six chartered ships were returned in the third quarter. As a result, total cost of sales per forty-foot-equivalent unit (FEU) fell by 17% year-on-year.

Drilling at Icewine #1 88 Energy Limite is pleased to provide the following drilling update. As at 29th October 2015 10:00 (AK time), the Kuukpik Rig 5 had drilled to a total depth of 3,515'. Current operations involve setting of 9 5/8" casing at 3,500', prior to drilling ahead in 8 1/2" hole through the Brookian section. The next casing point is at circa 10,300' before setting 7" casing and then commencing coring operations in the lower Hue / upper HRZ, which is the primary target for the Icewine #1 exploration well. The well is planned to a Total Depth of 11,600 feet and is scheduled to take 30 days of drilling to complete. The primary objective of the well is the HRZ shale formation, targeting a huge unconventional resource prize.Upon completion of drilling, certain data will be available immediately and will be reported to the market after internal examination; however, the definitive testing of the HRZ shale potential will take several months of data analysis. The pivotal focus will be an extensive evaluation of core material by specialist laboratories, which will cover a number of parameters considered critical for the success of the play. Conventional potential may also exist in shallower (Brookian) and deeper (Kuparuk) horizons and the well has been designed such that testing of these horizons is possible, if warranted. The drilling of Icewine #1 will deliver first insight to the conventional prospectivity of 88 Energy's acreage to be matured up by the potential acquisition of 3D seismic in the near term. The conventional horizons that will be encountered in Icewine #1 have not been delineated by 3D seismic and remain secondary to the primary target, that being the HRZ shale Regular announcements will be made during the course of drilling, as appropriate.Managing Director of 88 Energy Limited, Dave Wall commented: "Drilling operations in the top hole have proceeded smoothly and on schedule, with no HSE or lost time incidents. After setting the 9 5/8 casing, we will drill ahead into the more geologically interesting Brookian sequence." In November 2014, the Company entered into a binding agreement with Burgundy Xploration (BEX) to acquire a significant working interest (87.5%, reducing to 78% on spud of the first well on the project) in a large acreage position on a multiple objective, liquids rich exploration opportunity onshore Alaska, North America, referred to as Project Icewine. 88 Energy has a 98,182 gross contiguous acre position with 85,900 acres net to the Company (76,582 net acres post spud), located on an on all year operational access road with both conventional and unconventional oil potential. The primary term for the State leases is 10 years with no mandatory relinquishment and a low 16.5% royalty. The unconventional oil play will be tested by the recently spud Icewine #1 exploration well, scheduled to be completed in November 2015. Generous exploration incentives are provided by the State of Alaska with up to 85% of exploration expenditure in 2015 cash refundable, dropping to 75% mid 2016 and thereafter 35%.The primary objective is an untested, unconventional liquids-rich shale play in a prolific source rock, the HRZ shale,(Brookian Sequence), that co-sourced the largest oil field in North America; the giant Prudhoe Bay Oil Field Complex. Internal modelling and analysis indicates that Project Icewine is located in a high liquids vapour phase sweetspot analogous to those encountered in other Tier 1 shale plays e.g. the Eagle Ford, Texas. Conventional play potential can be found at Project Icewine within the same Brookian petroleum system and shallow to the HRZ shale and includes high porosity channel and deep water turbiditic sands. The Brookian conventional play is proven on the North Slope; the USGS (2013) estimate the remaining oil potential to be 2.1 billion

barrels just within the Brookian sequence. Additional conventional potential exists in the deeper Kuparuk sands and the Ivashuk Formation.Drilling, (2012), in the adjacent acreage to the north confirmed that the HRZ shales, along with the underlying Kingak & Shublik shales, were all within the oil window which is extremely encouraging for the unconventional potential at Project Icewine. In addition, a conventional oil discovery was reported in the Kuparuk sandstones A Prospective Resources Report by DeGolyer and MacNaughton, was commissioned by 88 Energy to evaluate the unconventional resource potential of Project Icewine in early December 2014 and was released to the market on 19 January 2015. THE FINNART OCEAN TERMINAL

"Finnart Ocean Terminal" also known as Finnart Oil terminal or Chap Point. The facility is located on the eastern shore of Loch Long, Scotland, built 1942/44 during the second World War by the United States Navy as a safe haven out of range of the Luftwaffe and behind the Clyde Boom Defences. After the war the Anglo Iranian Oil Company later to become British Petroleum took over the facility. In 1954 BP constructed a direct 20 inch pipeline 58 miles [93km] long to deliver imported crude oil from the terminal to the Grangemouth Refinery.

Deep water Piers were built to handle the ever increasing size of tankers, 324,000 dwt leviathans can berth at Finnart. A smaller 12 inch pipeline was also constructed to deliver finished products from the refinery to Finnart for export. A tank farm was also built into the hillside above the terminal. The import of Crude Oil reached its peak in the 1970s before North Sea Oil began coming ashore. In 2005 the terminal was taken over by the Ineos Group with some of the land around the Tank Farm still owned by The Ministry Of Defence on long term lease. In the early days towage was done by Steele & Bennie and Clyde Shipping Co, later Cory Ship Towage and today by the three tugs Svitzer Milford , Anglegarth, and Ayton

Apache announces North Sea discoveries with estimated net reserves Of 50 million to more than

70 million barrels Apache Corporation announced significant discoveries on two exploration wells in the Beryl area of the U.K. North Sea. The company also drilled two significant development wells in the Beryl area, from which no reserves have been previously booked. Additionally, Apache announced a large discovery at its Seagull prospect, which lies approximately 50 miles south of the company's Forties Field, the largest oil field in the U.K. North Sea.The K and Corona wells are the first exploratory prospects drilled by Apache in the Beryl area. Each discovery proves a separate geologic concept that helps to de-risk additional drilling locations. Apache estimates the K and Corona discoveries, combined with the

success at Seagull, represent likely net recoverable reserves of 50 million to more than 70 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe). Future appraisal drilling will enable the company to further define the upside potential beyond 70 MMboe. Apache's proved reserves in the North Sea at yearend 2014 were approximately 140 MMboe."Apache's exploration program in the high-potential Beryl area is off to an exceptional start. The success of our first two exploration wells at Beryl, combined with the Seagull discovery, could increase our total North Sea proved reserve base by more than 50 percent. Importantly, results obtained from the wells announced today emphasize the quality of our seismic surveys and the accuracy of our geologic model in the Beryl area," Thomas E. Voytovich, Apache's executive vice president – International and Offshore and E&P Technology, said. "Our large discovery at Seagull will likely have a longer investment time-horizon as it may require dedicated production facilities, but it is expected to have a very meaningful impact on Apache's medium- and long-term production in the region. We look forward to discussing the economics and details of these discoveries, along with a review of our extensive North Sea prospect inventory during our North Sea Region webcast Nov. 17." Details of the five discovery wells include: K Discovery – After the initial discovery with the 9/19B-18 well in June 2015, Apache successfully drilled two sidetracks into adjacent fault blocks in the Beryl area. In total, this discovery includes more than 1,500 feet of high-quality, oil-bearing sands within the Beryl, Linnhe, Nansen and Cormorant formations, across three distinct fault blocks. Apache is the operator of this discovery with a 55 percent WI, and partner Shell has the remaining 45 percent.Corona Discovery - The 9/18a-39A Corona exploration well, also located in the Beryl area, tested Apache's first Tertiary-aged injectite prospect. The well was drilled to a true total vertical depth subsea (TVDSS) of 6,411 feet and logged 225 feet total vertical depth (TVD) net pay in excellent reservoir-quality sandstone. Apache has a 100 percent working interest (WI) in this discovery.Beryl ACN Development Well – Drilled from the Beryl Alpha platform, the ACN development well encountered 131 feet TVD net pay in the Nansen and 40 feet TVD net pay in the Eiriksson formations. The well was successfully completed in the Nansen and came online Oct. 8, 2015 at a test rate of 11,194 barrels of oil per day (Bpd) and 30.4 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (MMcfd). Apache holds a 60.55 percent WI in the well, and partner Shell has the remaining 39.45 percent. Nevis Central L4S Development Well – The L4S pilot well, also located in the Beryl area, was drilled to a TVDSS of 9,298 feet and logged 114 feet TVD net pay in the Triassic Lewis formation. The pilot was followed by a high-angle producer that yielded a 30-day initial production (IP) rate of 45 MMcfd and 2,166 Bpd. The well has been producing since early July 2015. Apache has a 60.55 percent WI in the well, and partner Shell has the remaining 39.45 percent.Seagull Discovery – An appraisal well was drilled about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of the Forties complex in Block 22/29c in the Seagull Discovery and confirmed 672 feet of net oil pay over a 1,092-foot column in Triassic-age sands. The well was flow tested with a facility-constrained rate of 8,700 Bpd and 16 MMcfd with a very low pressure drawdown. Further appraisal work will continue following the recent acquisition of a multi-azimuth 3-D survey. Apache will assume operatorship of this license from Talisman Sinopec Energy UK Limited later this year subject to necessary approvals. Apache has a 35 percent WI. Partners in the well include Talisman Sinopec Energy UK Limited with 50 percent WI and JAPEX UK E&P Ltd. with 15 percent WI."The North Sea team has generated tremendous value in 2015 for Apache shareholders, despite a significant year-over-year reduction in capital spending. The discoveries we announced today, coupled with the North Sea's substantial inventory of development locations, provide low-risk investment optionality at very attractive rates of return," John J. Christmann, IV, Apache's chief executive officer and president, said. "Our objective is to achieve a balanced investment profile of short-, medium- and long-cycle projects across our global portfolio. The North Sea discoveries we announced today are attractive across the full spectrum of those investment time horizons. These discoveries further reinforce our confidence that our North Sea business has the ability to sustain production volumes, extend the Forties and Beryl productive lives out beyond 2030 and consistently provide significant free cash flow back to the corporation." Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Revises Business Outlook Looking at the Company’s business performance for the first half of FY2015, operating income and ordinary income improved as the tanker division enjoyed favorable market conditions, backed by a decline in bunker prices, says Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL).vOn the other hand, net income for the second quarter decreased from the previous announcement because the Company recorded an extraordinary loss from the stock revaluation of its equity method affiliate, Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha (“Daiichi Chuo”), as a result of that company’s decision to commence civil rehabilitation proceedings. The Company made a downward revision of its full-year business performance compared to the previous announcement, by taking into account situations such as the delay in recovery of thecontainership and dry bulker markets, while anticipating continued strength as the tanker market enters the winter demand season. Looking at the maritime shipping market conditions, the dry bulker market remained weak until about June, then an increase of shipment volumes of iron ore for long-distance transport from Brazil hiked the market temporarily over the summer, but later, concerns over the economic slowdown in China strengthened and dry-bulker shipment volumes declined.

The very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) market was continuing at a high level, stimulated by growth in actual demand and an increase in the nations’ strategic petroleum reserves due to lower crude oil prices.

Then, despite a sudden drop in the VLCC market, mainly due to the effect of the low demand period over summer, the ma rket recovered from the start of September. The containership market remained extremely weak on all routes, reflecting the low cargo volumes coming out of Asia. The Capesize bulker market remained at the weak level of US$5,000 per day on average until June. However, there was a slight reduction in the number of vessels in the whole industry from the previous period owing to the ongoing scrapping of vessels in res ponse to weakness of the market, and the shipment volumes of iron ore from Western Australia maintained a solid trend. In addition, there was a rise in shipment volumes of iron ore for long-distance transport from Brazil in and after June, leading to a positive turnaround. The market rose to as high as the level of US$20,000 per day in August. Later, however, the market began weakening again due to heightened concerns over the economic slowdown in China. The markets for Panamax on down, mid- and small-sized vessels, were weak as the oversupply of vessels remained unresolved. Source : Marinelink

NAVY NEWS

Will the US navy be able to visit NZ? The MP who promoted nuclear-free legislation in the mid-1980s says it is time to welcome an American Navy ship back to New Zealand. One may visit New Zealand waters for the first time in 30 years to help mark the 75th anniversary of the navy in November next year, if the United States accepts the invitation. The last visit was in 1984, before New Zealand declared itself nuclear-free and its participation in the Australia, New Zealand, United States Security (ANZUS) defence alliance ended. Former Labour minister Richard Prebble introduced bills to ban nuclear armed and powered ships, and in 1987 the government did so. Mr Prebble said the US Government has said it had taken nuclear weapons off its ships.A problem only arises if the ship is nuclear powered, he said."We know that American warships don't carry tactile nuclear weapons. Providing the ship is not nuclear-propelled I can see no reason why the prime minister cannot certify that he is satisfied the ship is not carrying nuclear weapons. The Defence Force has invited the US navy to visit in November next year, along with the navies of 30 other countries. But former Green MP Keith Locke said under the nuclear-free legislation the Prime Minister must be satisfied that any warship is nuclear-weapons-free.He said the

Americans would not send a ship if the Prime Minister specifically said it was not carrying nuclear weapons, as that would violate their policy of neither confirming nor denying whether its warships are carrying nuclear weapons. The public will have to watch the wording of statements about a US Navy ship visiting as the language around the specifics could be fudged to let it in, Mr Locke said. The Defence Force said the invitation reflected a good bilateral relationship. In late 2012, the United States lifted a ban on visits by New Zealand warships, which led to a thawing in tensions. In 2103, HMNZS Te Mana visited the US port in Guam, the first such visit in 30 years. Source : Radio New Zealand

South Korea’s Finance Authorities To Set Accounting Measures To Improve Transparency

Among Construction And Shipbuilding Companies

Finance officials in South Korea will come up with accounting measures that will improve the transparency on construction and shipbuilding companies to avoid huge revenue losses for delayed projects, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.A statement released by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Financial Supervisory Service on the same day said the accounting measures are expected to be imposed on the fourth quarter of the current year. It also stated that the measures oblige companies to present information every quarter on payments that the company has not received for delayed projects and how much of that quantity has been considered as possible losses."There have been too many uncertainties in the contract business because there was no transparent way to reflect construction works as they are built. The measures are aimed at helping more companies practice more transparency in their accounting," the agencies said.South Korea' finance officials were compelled to draw up these measures after Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. disclosed its biggest loss due to terminated orders and delayed shipments earlier this year."While this could help in the short term, the fundamental problem is that clients aren't paying and projects are delayed," Hana Daetoo Securities Co. analyst Park Moo Hyun said."Shipyards and construction companies also need to do a better job of making sure the contracts they sign can be delivered and on time," he added.Yonhap News Agency reported on the same day that Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. recorded a net loss of 2.39 trillion won in the second quarter of 2015. Aside from Daewoo, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. also suffered net losses on the same period.FSC reportedly said that the losses could be linked to suspicious accounting practices called "big bath.""When they sign long-term projects, their quarterly net profit is measured by some vague terms. It gives imprecise information to investors," the agency said."We will force shipbuilding companies to disclose related accounting information and to have external audits." Source : koreaportal

Man wins $21 million for cruise ship incident SEATTLE -- A Seattle jury awarded a Springfield, Illinois, man $21.5 million in lawsuit settlement after the man suffered a mild traumatic brain injury when he was hit by an automatic sliding door on board a Holland America Line cruise.James Hausman is a successful businessman who was on an eight-month cruise around the world with his wife and daughter. On November 26, 2011, in the South Pacific around the equator, Hausman walked out to the pool when an automatic sliding door opened and he was struck in the side of the head.Doctors diagnosed him with a mild traumatic brain injury and post concussive syndrome. Hausman's wife Carol said he now has problems with dizziness and fatigue."This was a man who used to sleep less than I did and now this is a man who sleeps much more than I ever hope to sleep," Carol said. "He doesn't like to be in public, he doesn't like to be in places with too much stimulation, too much bright lights. He just can't tolerate that stuff in the way that he used to be able to." According to Hausman's attorneys, Rick Friedman and David Roosa, Hausman's incident was one of more than a dozen involving automatic sliding doors on Holland America cruises where medical care was needed in the three years leading up to the incident. Attorney David Roosa said all they wanted was for Holland America to take accountability and responsibility for the incident that happened on their watch."We're very happy for our clients and we believe that this is a just and a fair verdict," Roosa said. "This lawsuit wasn't their first option; it was their last option, and unfortunately it was necessary."Holland America put out a brief statement about the settlement Friday saying, "Holland America Line is committed to the safety and security of our guests and take all incidents very seriously. We have no comment regarding the specifics of the lawsuit, other than we will be pursuing an appeal." Carol Hausman said she is thankful for the jury's decision and that they took the time to hear the facts of the case."What's happened to us in the last several years has hopefully been eye opening for others where you can't take a knock in the head for granted," Hausman said. "It can be something very serious." Source ; KING5
