The IBPA Journalist Outing to Pistoia on Wednesday 21st June has been mentioned in earlier Bulletins. We have place for four more IBPA members making a total of 20 in the group, the maximum number. Please

sign up before 18:00 Monday 19th with Jan Swaan in the Press Room if you want to join.

Here is the programme: 10:30 Bus leaving from the venue Mondolandia, outside the restaurant. Our guide Mrs. Andrea Bregovic will already be on the bus.11:00 Arrival at Piazza San Francesco (Parking place of the bus). Start and end of the guided city tour on foot.

Pistoia is a small city, not big like Florence. On our way we go inside churches, where it is cool and one can sit down while the guide explains.

From Piazza San Francesco to the church of Sant'Andrea, then Ospedale del Ceppo with friezes and tondoes, then Piazza del Duomo (where we will also see the market) and the monuments (for example the Cathedral). At some point you could have some time for yourself or join the group to visit the Piazza della Sala (near Piazza Duomo).

You can check the route on http://www.villagiorgia.it/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/PTMAP-2017.pdf

14:30 Back at the venue.

Lunch will be taken during the visit.

On a deal from the EBL Cup a player led the three of clubs from }K7632 against 1NT. This is how the suit was distributed:

} A 8 4 } 10 9 } K 7 6 3 2 } Q J 5

Declarer put up dummy's queen and North contributed the nine and declarer the four. When East regained the lead she continued with the }K!

When West gently enquired as to the rationale behind this disastrous play East explained that she expected declarer to have started with a doubleton }A10 (despite the irrefutable evidence of the first trick!).

A neuralyzer is a device considered standard issue employed by the Men in Black.

It is a device about the size of an average cigar tube that gives a bright flash which erases the memories of the past hours, days, weeks, months or years, depending on the chosen settings.

Our Technical Manager, Hans van Staveren opined that it might be a very useful aid for our team of Directors!

In the Mixed Teams Jovi Smederevac played on a team of five from five different countries. In the Women's Teams she is playing in a team of six from six different counties. It might be a record?

During one of their matches in the Open on Saturday a member of team Black was asked by an opponent, "What kind of peters do you play?" to which he replied, "Fredin & Bertheau".

If you are looking for a good, inexpensive restaurant try Da Egisto, Piazza Cesare Battisti 13, 51016 Montecatini - +39 0572 78413 - recommended by several discerning Italian members of staff.

Both Francesca and Arianna own impressive cameras with long lenses. As they sit either side of your Editor it was definitely a case of "Canon to the right of them, Canon to the left of them...."

Match of the Day is BBC TV's principal football programme. It is shown during the English football season, featuring highlights of the day's matches in the Premier League.

It is one of the BBC's longest-running shows, having been on air since 22 August 1964. In its early days only one match was shown.

Here is a compilation of clips from the show featuring the legendary George Best:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANHWNtCZFEcIf I had to select only one match from the opening

round of the team events it would have to be Rams v Bridge24B:

It would have been interesting to see how declarer would have tackled 5[ - there are plenty of ways to go wrong after the defenders start with two rounds of hearts. However, the simple line of playing the ace of spades followed by the queen should deliver eleven tricks easily enough. The extra under trick gave Rams another 7IMPs.

East's extraordinary overcall appeared to have rebounded, as although the combination of that and West's jump to game meant there was little chance of NS reaching either of the makeable slams (6NT or 6{ played by South) it offered up the possibility of a huge penalty. However, it was clearly going to be difficult for NS to envisage the true situation.

Had South started with the four of spades (difficult but not totally out of the question) the defenders would have had every chance of taking the contract five down. Not unreasonably South started with the two of clubs and North won with the ace. At this point switching to the king of spades is a tough play to find (again putting +1100 on the map) and North returned a club, South winning with the king and switching to the six of hearts. Declarer put in dummy's jack and North took the ace, cashed the king of diamonds and played the queen of clubs. Declarer ruffed and played a spade and when South put in the jack +500 sank to +300 as declarer won with dummy's ace, set up the hearts and played a spade.

It reminded me of a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where the Black Knight, having had his left arm cut off in a fight with King Arthur exclaims "Tis but a scratch".

The encounter between Ventin and Badger C was at table 19; early days, admittedly, but a big loss for either team would push them down towards average, whereupon the climb to a qualifying place would be a steep one.

Ventin’s team was a mixture of Swedes and Italians, Badger was all English.

Things started well when an ambiguity of spot cards presented Wrang with a problem he did not solve.

Board 22. Dealer East. E-W Vul. [ 10 3 ] A 6 3 2 { 9 4 2 } 7 6 5 2 [ A K [ 9 8 7 5 4 ] K J 8 4 ] Q 7 5 { A K Q J { 8 6 } 10 8 4 } Q 9 3 [ Q J 6 2 ] 10 9 { 10 7 5 3 } A K J

Both tables faced a two-card 1} opener from South. After doubling and cuebidding Allerton played 3NT while Antonio Palma gave up in 2[. Both Norths guessed well to lead clubs – the six, second highest from four. Where Badger were defending

Hinden cleared clubs and North could get in with ]A for a painless down one. In the other room the }6 lead looked consistent with two or three. Worried about setting up declarer’s long club, Wrang shifted immediately to spades, knowing declarer had at most two, and declarer drove the heart ace and claimed nine tricks when that suit behaved.

On the next deal Badger gave it back when the opponents somewhat unfairly bid one suit then led another.

Board 23. Dealer South. Both Vul. [ Q 9 8 6 Q 9 4 { K J 10 } Q 4 2 [ 7 3 [ K J 5 2 ] K J 10 8 5 ] 7 6 { Q 9 { 5 2 } K 10 7 3 } A J 9 6 5 [ A 10 4 ] A 3 2 { A 8 7 6 4 3 } 8 The auction again started similarly: South opened

1{ and over a negative double of 1] from their partner they rebid 1[ suggesting a three card suit. Wrang, South heard 1NT from his partner and moved on with 2{ to end the auction for a quiet 110. Hinden (who had promised an unbalanced hand) heard 2{ from North and raised to 3{. Now Osborne tried 3NT and the defenders ran clubs to squeeze both hands. He unguarded spades and hearts from dummy and tried a diamond finesse against West. Now the defenders could cash four more major suit winners for down five and 12 IMPs.

For our next deal I’ll pose the East hand as a problem and show you the full deal in a moment.

Board 25. Dealer West. E-W Vul. [ K ] 7 6 5 4 { A Q 9 6 } Q J 9 5 [ A 8 5 4 ] A 10 9 3 { 10 8 7 4 } 3

South opens a weak 2[ and plays there. Partner leads the ]Q, denying the king. You take the ace at trick one? Let’s say you return a club – why not? Partner wins the ace as declarer follows with the seven and returns the six for you to ruff as declarer produces the king. What now? Antonio Palma made the best technical play when he decided that the only legitimate chance to set the hand was to play partner for the [Q – unlikely as that might be since declarer would otherwise just lose one trump trick. He played ace and a second spade and partner produced the [Q and gave him the ruff.

This was the full hand:

[ K ] 7 6 5 4 { A Q 9 6 } Q J 9 5 [ Q 7 [ A 8 5 4 ] Q J 8 ] A 10 9 3 { K 3 2 {10 8 7 4 } A 10 8 6 2 } 3 [ J 10 9 6 3 2 ] K 2 { J 5 } K 7 4

Switch the {J and {K and this defence is necessary, else declarer may be able to pitch his club on the third diamond. The deal actually produced a swing when the defence lost their third club ruff in the other room.

Ventin added a couple of small swings when Allerton-Jagger bid a poor game and missed a good one, then on the final deal Ventin twisted the knife with an entirely random result.

Board 30. Dealer East. None Vul. [ 10 9 6 ] K 8 6 2 { A 9 3 } A Q 9 [ Q [ K 5 3 ] Q J 7 5 ] A 9 4 3 { J 8 5 4 { K Q 10 } K J 6 5 } 10 4 2 [ A J 8 7 4 2 ] 10 { 7 6 2 } 8 7 3

In one room Badger bid to 3[ down 50, over 3], which also rated to be down one. In the other room Jagger opened an 11-14 no-trump, passed round to Ventin who doubled. The tray came half back to North and East, neither of whom saw the double, (though your reporter did). Accordingly each of them passed it out, when had they seen the double either of them might have acted. 1NTx on a spade lead lost the obvious eight tricks. Down 300 and 8 more IMPs to Ventin, winners by 35-12.

Open Teams Qualification - Round 4

After three rounds of Swiss, the Vinci and Shokolata teams were leading the field – and that was why they had to meet in round 4. After the relatively quiet sets of boards in rounds 2 and 3, the boards got pretty lively again in this round. Below, you will find a review of what happened in this match.

On the first board, Vinci took a 3-0 lead by defeating the opponents’ contracts by one trick in both rooms. On the next board, they had a chance to increase their lead significantly:

East led the }8. Declarer put up dummy’s queen and West won the ace to shift to a low spade. Declarer played low from hand, so East could win the queen and return the suit to partner’s ace. A third round of spades went to declarer’s king. Next, declarer led the }10 to dummy’s jack and advanced the {Q, which was covered by the king and ace. When declarer next cashed the }K, East threw a heart. At this point, declarer needed to guess right in diamonds: he might play for West to have started with {K10 doubleton or he might finesse the {10 through East.

As you can see, the latter option would have brought him his contract but when he played for {K10 doubleton in West and thus put up dummy’s jack, he had to accept one down. Shokolata +100.

North showed his two-suiter by making a balancing double, but South quite reasonably thought his hand was strong enough to sit the double (fair enough – but NOT facing a passed hand?). He led the }9, which ran to declarer’s jack. At the other table, the double showed spades and another, 2{ enquiring about the other suit but excluding clubs as a playable spot.

East led a heart to the jack and declarer’s king. The }K won the next trick but the second round of the

suit went to East’s jack. East persisted with hearts, so declarer won the ]10 and ruffed a club. Had he now played [A and another, he might even have made his contract as the trumps were 3-3 but declarer settled for a safe one down by playing a top heart. That was ruffed by East, who then opened the attack. on declarer’s trump length by shifting to diamonds. Vinci +100 but 10 IMPs back to Shokolata to level the match.

North’s 2{ showed either a weak jump shift in hearts or a 10+ hand with 5-5 in the majors. East’s double showed diamonds so West tried to win the partscore battle but must have felt a little disappointed when partner produced only four trumps.

On a club lead to South's ace and a heart back, declarer ran into a couple of ruffs and thus was soon one down. Vinci +100.

West North East South Versace Roll Lauria Levin — — Pass 1} Pass 2{ Pass 2] All Pass

Against basically the same auction as in the other room, Lauria, looking at his heart strength, was not interested in showing any signs of a diamond suit so Versace was never tempted. Down four, another +200 and 7 IMPs to Vinci to lead 26-14 now.

Open Teams Qualification - Round 5

In general, spectators at competitive events like action – a big bang, if you will. Low-scoring contests are usually considered boring, although exceptional plays can make a seemingly dull event more interesting. Such was the case in the round-five Open Teams qualifying match between Gamax and Allfrey, in seventh and eight places, respectively, after four rounds. Gamas had 57.62 victory points, Allfrey 57.31.

The Gamax team is Geza Homonnay, Peter Lakatos and Gabor Winkler, Hungary, and Alon Birman, Israel. Alexander Allfrey, Andrew Robson and David Gold, England, are joined by Kevin Castner, Germany.

The fact that the two teams were in a virtual tie lent some interest to the affair, but the boards were mostly flat. It was looking like a snoozer.

Gamax earned a 2-IMP swing on the first board for going one down in 3NT for minus 50 while declarer in the same contract at the other table went two down.

Allfrey managed a 1-IMP swing on the next deal when Robson took 12 tricks in a routine 4[ contract while at the other table Gold and Castner got two club tricks against 4[ for minus 450.

Gamas was ahead 3-1 when board 17 came along. Anyone still watching was treated to a fine display of card play in an awkward contract.

Winkler led the {4. Robson played dummy’s king and played a low heart to his jack and South’s king. The }9 was ducked in dummy and Homonnay won with the queen. When he switched to the [K, Robson thought for some time before playing low from hand and the jack from dummy. A diamond went to Robson’s ace and he played the ]7 to the 9 and dummy’s ace, North following with the 8. A spade to Robson’s 10 was followed by the [A and a heart. Homonnay was left on lead with only hearts and clubs. He could take his heart winners but then had to lead from the }K into dummy’s A-J. Robson took three diamonds, two spades, two clubs and the trump ace for eight tricks and plus 110. It was just a 1-IMP swing, but a fun deal to watch.

From that point, he used winning clubs to draw trumps, in a sense, and eventually claimed for minus 100. As it turned out, passing would have saved only 8 IMPs because of what happened at the other table.

Combined with the plus 100 at the other table, Gamax had earned a 15-IMP swing to win the match 19-8.

Open Teams Qualification - Round 5Highlanders vs Bridgebertheau

In round five of the Open Teams the Norweigian Highlanders went up against the Swedish Bridgebertheau in an all-Scandinavian battle. The Swedish pop group Roxette (who are probably most famous for writing the soundtrack “It must have been love” to the blockbuster movie “Pretty Woman” in 1987) released Crash! Boom! With few entries to dummy declarer played the ace of clubs and the jack. West won the second round and played another spade which declarer won with the jack. Declarer then ran the jack of diamonds to East, who exited with the nine

At the other table Ola Rimstedt got to play the very same contract. The difference from the Open Room was that West knew that declarer had spades and dummy the other major. When clubs didn’t seem to be an attractive option, West simply led a diamond. South called for a low from dummy, East won with the queen, cashed the ace of diamonds and exited with a third round setting up a diamond with his partner.

Not the best start from declarer's point of view, and again, there was a problem with entries to dummy. Declarer called for the queen of clubs and unblocked the ten from hand to keep communications. West won with the king and cashed out the established diamond. East discarded the eight of hearts, discouraging. Declarer decided to trust the signal from East and also pitched his heart, playing for a squeeze instead of finessing in hearts.

The Crash! had been accomplished; one down and 10 IMPs to the Highlanders.

A very natural auction brought the Norwegians to game. (2} included a balanced 20-21 HCP.)The reason why North never explored for a spade fit will remain untold, as like the tale of the Giant Rat of Sumatra, the world may not be ready for it. South with minimum values and only two diamonds decided to pass the quantitative raise by partner. A very wise decision, since the slam wasn’t good at all. If diamonds were 3-3, slam was just slightly better than 50%, and declarer needed more than that from the spades if they weren’t. Taking the combined chances together we are probably down to something like 25%...

Declarer got the expected lead of the jack of clubs. Winning in dummy, he tried the diamonds and when the suit broke 3-3, he cashed all five of them and tried the finesse in spades. When that lost to the king West exited with a club and could just sit and wait for his second trick to come later in clubs. 460 to NS.

The Swedish Juniors had a more optimistic view on the hand and arrived to 6NT, BOOM! Again, West led a club. Declarer won in dummy with the queen and immediately finessed in spades. When that lost to the king a second club was played declarer won with the ace and cashed the diamonds. When there was no possible way to set up the nine of clubs it was one off.

Declarer could of course have made 6NT, if he knew how the spades were distributed. But why on earth choose that line? However, maybe Rimstedt should have cashed out the ace of hearts and all his winners in the black suits before playing on the diamonds, which would have squeezed East in the majors. East could have pitched hearts as long as West kept his, though. But with queen-jack-ten-nine with East and four spades there would for sure have been a winning line. (And note that on the run of the diamonds West must keep his hearts guarded or else East falls victim to a squeeze.)

I found the heart, but hit the wallCrash! Boom! Bang!

Nothing could be more true. Let’s have a look at the bang that finished the match.

Montecatini, some 20 years ago, was actually the site where the classic Peter Fredin double took place. What happened then was that the opponents who were doubled for blood in game suddenly bid a grand slam (that was cold) when they were woken up by a double to realize they had messed up the earlier bidding…

Carlsson, actually also called Peter, funnily enough, probably had this in mind where he smoothly passed Four Hearts… The defense had no problem taking declarer one down.

Mikael Rimstedt was seriously considering bidding Five Clubs instead of 4NT (any two suiter), but finally went for the later alternative, though he wouldn’t have been too happy if partner would have bid diamonds instead of clubs. The patient survived surgery however and the twins came to a stop with South as declarer. Now there was nothing the Norwegians could do to prevent declarer making the contract, when he took a successful heart finesse after pulling trumps. With North declarer, East might have led the king of hearts, which would take Five Clubs down.

When the smoke had cleared after the ten board match the score was set at 29-23 for the Highlanders.

Italy’s most famous spa, without question, is Montecatini Terme.

‘Taking the waters’ at the thermal springs here was an essential component of the sophisticate’s 19th Century grand tour, and the graceful Belle Epoque architecture of those civilized times still dominates. The facilities and treatments at the handful of spas, however, are state of the art. If you’re a Fellini fan, head to Terme Tettuccio, where he filmed his iconic 8½ in the early 1960s. Rival Monsummano Terme boasts a unique natural ‘thermal grotto,’ a hot underground lake.

Today, in Montecatini Terme, the Open European Mixed Pairs Championship finished, after the qualifying stage (two sessions of 26 boards each), and 4 final sessions of 26 boards each, the pair of Michal Klukowski-Justyna Zmuda (Poland) were crowned champions. When only one board was missing to finish the championship Auken-Welland were in first place with a minuscule advantage of 0.70 of a MP, but after the last board they had to settle for second place.

Let's see two boards that the champions played against Alfredo Versace and Emanuela Pramotton, in the last session of the final.

East - West play some kind of strong club, so East's 1[ opening bid, limited her hand. Versace intervened with 2}, and Michal described his game forcing hand with four cards support by bidding 2[. Zmuda bid the spade game, showing no interest in playing slam and Klukowski passed.

Versace led his {4. And very soon after Justyna scored 680. As you can see the only lead to defeat the spade slam is the }A followed by a club for North's ruff ... this fact could not have escaped anybody at the table.

On the next board, Zmuda opened 1NT, Michal asked for majors with 2} and Justyna showed her four spades. When Klukowski showed his partner that he had no spade support and invited her to play slam, she offered to play the diamond slam, but that was corrected to the slam at no-trumps.

Again the club lead defeats the contract and again the club lead was almost impossible ... Versace chose to lead the ]9 and this time Justyna made 13 tricks.

It seems that the Poland pair must be Fellini fans, so they got carried away by his surrealism and related the first board to the second, declaring the slam in NT, despite the lack of the ace and king of clubs. If Versace had remembered how Fellini's film 8½ weaves in and out of reality and fantasy, perhaps it would have woven a fine loop between board 9 and board 10 and Versace could have decided to lead a club only to verify that the first hand foreshadowed what he had to do in the second ... Certainly too fellinesque.

The champion’s results on this table were 90% in board 9 and 84% in board 10.

Remember they won the championship by only 0.02 %... thanks to Fellini...

Here comes a board from round six of the teams in Montecatini. You hold; [J7 ]J954 {K87654 }9 and have participated in the following action:

West North East SouthYou 1[ 2{ Dbl 5{ 6] All Pass

Your partner led the ace of diamonds and this is what you could view:

[ J 7 ] J 9 5 4 { K 8 7 6 5 4 { A } 9 [ 4 2 ] Q 7 6 3 { 10 2 } A J 8 7 6 Declarer ruffs the opening lead in hand and cashes

the ace and king of trumps. Your partner discards a diamond on the second. Declarer then puts the queen of clubs on the table, that going to the king, ace and your nine. Next dummy´s last diamond is ruffed, and declarer, who is now in hand, plays the four of clubs, which goes to dummy’s eight, whereupon you ruff. What now, and why, when the remaining cards are:

[ J 7 ] J { 8 7 6 5 } — [ 4 2 ] Q 7 { — } J 7 6

In the match between Heimdal and Villa Fabbriche West now returned a diamond. Did you work out that you needed to return a spade to defeat declarer, since he will be locked in hand, unable to enter dummy to pull your last trump? On a diamond back, declarer simply ruffs, pulls your trump, crosses to hand with a spade and took the marked club finesse to score twelve tricks. At the other table, Four Spades made 11 tricks. 13 IMPs to Heimdal vs Villa Fabbriche when Glenn Grothem made six hearts.

This was the full hand:

Board 29. Dealer North. All Vul. [ A K 10 9 8 6 ] A K 10 8 { — } Q 5 4 [ J 7 [ Q 5 3 ] J 9 5 4 ] 2 { K 8 7 6 5 4 { A Q J 9 3 } 9 } K 10 3 2 [ 4 2 ] Q 7 6 3 { 10 2 } A J 8 7 6

Everyone else who tried to declare Six Hearts went down, some were even three or four tricks short after losing control. Even at double dummy you have to work a bit to be able to make the contract, but here comes a line of play that would work.

Ruff the opening lead, play the queen of clubs, East probably covers and you win with dummy’s ace. You then cash the ace and king of spades and ruffs a spade with the queen of hearts to set up the suit. You arrive at the following seven-card ending:

[ 10 9 8 ] A 10 { — } 5 4 [ — [ — ] J 9 5 ] — { K 8 7 6 { Q J 9 3 } — } 10 3 2 [ — ] 7 6 { 10 } J 8 7 6

At this point you may simply play a spade and pitch the ten of diamonds, after which West may choose his poison. We simply have to finesse the jack of hearts for our twelve tricks.

HOW TO DEFEND?

Open Teams Qualification - Round 6

On the first match yesterday I commended the Great Dealer for providing 3 slams and 7 game contracts in the 10 boards. Today’s opening match offered a parade of the world’s top players, yes, but only a 1NT contract on the first board. We had no need to worry. It was followed by two slams and seven game contracts. Amazingly generous fare, particularly as the GD had permitted it on the Sabbath. Hallelujah!

I was surprised by Alfredo Versace’s lack of action on this deal:

Overcalling 2} on the South cards would meet with disapproval in dusty textbooks, but I dare say several South players succumbed to that temptation. West’s 2] showed a weak raise in their system (an accurate evaluation) and Lauria entered with 2[. What action should South take over East’s ambitious game-try of 3}?

I expected South to double to show some values. It would not be solely a lead-directing double, since he would be on lead against a heart contract. Versace passed on the second and third rounds and East’s 3] contract went one down. +100 to N/S.

I suggested to Roland Wald, my co-commentator, that South might have imbibed one cup of coffee too few on this Sunday morning. He explained a point that I had missed – the coffee in this tournament is generously provided by Madama Lavazza, the other team’s captain. It would have been inappropriate to lend support to the opponents in this way.

Lauria led a club to dummy’s ace and declarer persisted with clubs, hoping for a diamond discard. Vearsace interrupted this dream with a ruff and switched to a diamond. That was two down. East/West would now have to hope that 4] would go down at the other table.

North led the [6. Which card should declarer play from dummy?

If the lead is from the [K, declarer can run the lead to his queen and then make the safety play of finessing clubs into the safe North hand. If the lead is not from the king, South may win the first trick with the [K and be able to switch effectively to hearts to beat the contract. In that case declarer would do better to rise with the [A and hope for five club tricks.

The difficulty of the guess was reflected in the considerable time that Madala took over his play to the first trick. Looking only at the E/W cards, I favoured running the lead round to his hand and Roland Wald favoured rising with the ace. Eventually, Madala rose with the [A. He cashed four rounds of diamonds and

On the face of it, 6] would require a 3-2 heart break and the }K to be onside (or for West to make an adventurous lead from the }K). In other words it would be a below-par slam. Time stood still while Versace considered his next move. After around 3 minutes he ventured a general try of 5], one that was immediately accepted by Lauria. It was a further outing for the Gazilli convention. When Bocchi invited slam with his splinter-bid in diamonds, Sementa had a clear-cut 5} cue-bid (with two great cards in his hand). Bocchi then bid 6], to reach a slam that had similar prospects to the one landed earlier by Versace.

Sementa ruffed the diamond lead in dummy and cashed the ace and king of trumps, East discarding a diamond on the second round. He continued with the }Q, covered by the king and ace, and ruffed his last diamond. If a club to the jack had dropped the 10, all would have been well. No, Donati ruffed and returned the [J to dummy ace. Declarer played a club to East’s 10 and another club promoted West’s ]J, putting the slam two down.

At the other table Lauria and Versace stopped in 4] and gained 13 IMPs for the Vinci team.

It had been an absorbing match with some 2200 kibitzers there at the climax.

...The science of investigating small objects and structures.

When you are playing with a brand new partner it is inevitable that you will spend some time sorting out your bidding agreements. Some pairs like to keep the discussion to a minimum, while others are happy to consider all sorts of minutiae.

Having formed a partnership very much at the last minute Jovi Smederevac and Matilda Poplilov discussed a number of sequences, one of which was:

East cashed a top spade and switched to a diamond for the nine and queen. Declarer ruffed the spade return, crossed to dummy with the ace of clubs, played the king of diamonds covered by the ace and ruffed, ruffed a heart and played winning diamonds for a delightful +750 and 12 IMPs when compared with 5]down one (it could have been made).

5} can be defeated if East switches to a heart at trick two, removing one of dummy's trumps. It might be possible to defeat it even if East fails to find the killing switch at trick two! Imagine West wins the first round of diamonds with the ace! Now declarer will surely play to ruff out queen third of diamonds in the East hand.

Herman De Wael

Continuing my stroll down memory lane about the the 43rd European (Team) Championships back in 1997 in Montecatini Terme.

When I told Mark Horton that I was preparing a series on those championships, he surprised the Bulletin Office by reciting, off the top of his head, the winning Limerick in that year's competition:

A lady from Montecatinihad suit symbols on her bikinidesigned by Versaceand worn at La PaceIt earned her a red Lamborghini

Mark attributed the Limerick to Patrick Jourdain. A memorable effort indeed.

However, when going through the bulletins of the day, I came accross the Limerick, and it turned out that only the first four lines were composed by Patrick, with the fifth line the object of a competition. And guess who had contributed the final line cited by Mark? Me!

And what's more, it did not even win – even though Mark remembered it for 20 years.

The actual winning fifth line came from Sandra Landy and went:

Her good points were seen very clearly!

Patrick's own entry went:

It was soaked by a spilt dry Martini

IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY...
