PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Knowledge and competence in your field of research are vital foun-dations for a successful doctorate. Equally important is a range of key competencies that are crucial not only for your academic deve- lopment, but also in other professional contexts: Communicating adequately in different settings, organizing yourself and your work, and mastering IT are examples of this. The fact that only a maxi-mum of 1 out of 10 doctoral researchers continue their career in academia highlights the need for a varied skill set even more.

The Professional Development Program of Dahlem Research School takes this into account and helps you to prepare for diffe-rent career paths.

Academic Performance courses are designed to provide guidance in obtaining your doctorate and successfully navigating your aca-demic life. On the basis of the principles of research integ-rity, the workshops hone your reading, writing and teaching skills and sup-port you in publishing and presenting your research and defending your dissertation.

Management Competency courses give you the opportunity to ac-quire and improve additional skills that complement your academic performance and prepare you to take on responsible positions in your future career. You will find workshops focusing on a range of IT tools, support for motivating and organizing yourself, as well as strategies for improving your networking skills.

Each career requires individual planning. Our program provides you with courses that support you along the way, from exploring your options and choosing a career path to applying for jobs. Other offerings give you a chance to gain new perspectives by e.g. getting acquainted with the basics of economics.

TRAINING – COACHING – MENTORING

Within our Professional Development Program you can choose be-tween different educational formats depending on your needs and career goals.

Training sessions constitute the major part of our program. In one- to two-day highly interactive workshops our experienced trainers instruct you in achieving expertise and mastering new skills in va-rious fields, for instance about the best way to present yourself and your research results, teach at university level or organise your time.

Coaching in small groups aims at developing your awareness and the power to reflect on your existing skills and knowledge and help-ing you to find the best way to enhance your performance. Our qualified coaches guide you in finding, trying and evaluating ef-fective motivation strategies for completing your doctoral studies or in determining your professional potential in order to devise a suitable career strategy.

Mentoring aims to support female doctoral candidates in explo-ring and pursuing their career options. It brings them together with experienced professional mentors who offer guidance, encourage-ment and support. Mentors and mentees meet regularly through-out a one-year program and participate in specially designed work-shops, coachings and networking events.

Trainer John Kluempers, Ph.D.

Date Wed, 29 June 2016, 9:00-17:00

Venue Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16

The focus of the workshop will be:• Implementing verbal and non-verbal presentation strategies,• communicating complex contents, • taking questions, also difficult ones, in the follow-up discus-

sion.

After the workshop, participants have a clear, realistic impression about their individual strengths and about aspects they should work on to become more successful.

In this workshop, good presentation skills are assumed and the participants are to give a prepared talk in front of their peers. To maximize the impact, an explanation of presentation criteria crea-tes the foundation for the workshop. The greatest benefit then comes with direct feedback from the participants and trainer who base their evaluations on the presentation criteria. These criteria include among others: good vocal technique, addressing broader audiences, and strong take-home messages. All presentations are followed by a discussion to create the realistic scenario of a conference talk. Also, difficult situations that can occur during discussions and how to master them professionally, will be addressed.

Feedback is based on the 12-Parameter Model which was designed by textATRIUM specifically for evaluating academic presentations.

You never get a second chance for the first impression!

TEACHING AND LEARNING AT UNIVERSITY LEVELTeaching

TRAINING for doctoral candidates and postdocs

Disciplines all Fee: 200 €

Trainer Petra Eggensperger

Date Wed/Thu, 20/21 July 2016, 9:00-17:00

Venue Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16

We have all been there: lectures with 100 slides in 45 Min, seminars in which only the teacher is talking, after which students have no idea what the experiments they were performing actually tried to prove. Teaching at university is often well intended but does not always reach the aspired outcome – the learning of the student.

This workshop will enable you to do better. After the course you will have • reflected on three basic concepts of teaching and learning

(theme centred interaction, winning active partners and con-structive alignment)

• defined your role as a teacher (facilitator) in terms of learning outcome oriented teaching

• started the didactical planning of a course/session by defining learning objectives and designing appropriate learning acti-vities

The workshop covers the basics of professional university teaching: the shift from teaching to learning. The participants will improve their methodological knowledge about the teaching – learning in-teraction and how that setting can be influenced effectively. The aim is to reach a level of learner centered teaching that leads to a deep-level learning approach on the side of the students. Hence, interaction with and motivation of the students is in the focus of this course.

Short inputs from the trainer, group discussions, reflection of own teaching experiences, micro-teaching with feedback from the group and the trainer.

Methods

The goal of this course will be to develop your repertoire of stan-dard language used in academic discourse and to help you master some of the finer points of English grammar.

Research papers and abstracts follow more or less the same pat-tern: a general introduction is followed by a description of metho-dology and procedure, after which the research results are presen-ted and evaluated, and conclusions drawn. Referring to authentic material, we will look at these sections one by one, focussing on vo-cabulary, expressions and grammatical structures which commonly appear in each. Course participants are requested to bring a few recent research articles from their field, written by native speakers of English, on subjects which are closely related to the work they are doing. They should be no longer than 15 pages, and should not be chapters from books.

In addition to in-class writing tasks, there will be online, self-study exercises, and everyone will have the opportunity to give a pre-sentation in class. Feedback on all written and oral tasks will be provided on a regular basis.

TRAINING for doctoral candidates

Disciplines all Fee: 100 €

Trainer Dr Matthias Mayer

Date Thu, 26 May 2016, 9:00-17:00

Venue Raum L 113, Seminarzentrum, Otto-von-Simson-Str. 26

• Being able to apply the most powerful time planning methods • Know how to balance work and private life• Exchange of experiences with trainer and other participants

A distinguishing feature of a research career is the unstructured nature of the job. Doctoral candidates, postdocs, and professors are generally masters of their own time. Although this autonomy can be liberating, it can also result in tremendous inefficiency if one does not develop effective time-management tactics. This seminar covers the most valuable techniques for people in academia. It will give you methods to create your own time plan and to set clear priorities. You will learn how to work with maximum concentration and how to leave current time killers behind.

Topics• Making decisions and developing initiative• Working with clear (smart) goals at different timely horizons• Planning time realistically: master plan, weekly and daily plan-

ning• Setting priorities (Eisenhower technique, Pareto principle)• Finding your balance: research versus private life• Getting rid of time-killers• Working with maximum concentration: silent hour & the Po-

modoro technique

Trainer input, individual, partner, and group work, written and crea-tive focussing exercises; guided sequences in which participants can develop images; brief presentations by participants, group re-flection.

NETWORKING AT CONFERENCESCommunicating

TRAINING for doctoral candidates and postdocs

Disciplines all Fee: 100 €

Trainer John Kluempers, Ph.D.

Date Thu, 30 June 2016, 9:00-17:00

Venue Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16

Young academics learn that conferences provide not only the op-portunity to present their work, but also themselves. Communica-tion in professional forums is often decisive for future career op-tions. After this workshop, participants are able to plan professional gatherings in advance and feel more comfortable in the social set-ting of their academic community. More importantly, they are able to set their own goals when attending conferences – and to develop concrete strategies of achieving them.

This workshop helps you to meet people with an attitude that is both adequate and self-confident, in a variety of conference situ-ations, e.g. "socials". Both verbal and non-verbal strategies will be considered.

Specifically, you will learn• how to identify players, roles and goals in conference settings,• how to conduct themselves professionally,• how to initiate and encourage small talk,• how to talk to decision-makers and• how to build and maintain professional contacts.

During the workshop participants work in pairs, small groups as well as in plenum to maximize learning effects.

To discuss approaches to doing research in the humanities in dif-ferent cultures, to inform doctoral candidates about the most re-levant aspects of being a doctoral researcher in the humanities in Germany, and to develop strategies to cope with the cultural and academic differences.

What does "doing research" mean in the context of the Humanities in different academic cultures and in an increasingly globalised aca-demic world? What is expected from academics in the Humanities in Germany? The workshop will address some of the most relevant questions:

• The Status of doctoral researchers in the Humanities • Developing an academic profile (discipline / interdisciplinary

approaches)• Defining, developing and pursuing a research project: The pro-

cess of research• Code of Academic Conduct

• Short presentations by trainer• Role play• Discussions• Work in small groups with presentation of results

The aim of this introduction is to develop observational and ana-lytical tools in order to understand frequent problems and misun-derstandings in intercultural academic settings and to develop communicative and problem-solving skills for intercultural com-munication in academic settings.

International cooperation and mobility are among the key features of academic and scientific work in the 21st century. In the context of this academic mobility, it is often assumed that academic / sci-entific culture is by definition more universal and internationally compatible than other social spheres. This point of view is further reinforced by the fact that English has established itself as the lin-gua franca in international academia. However, academic traditions and cultures vary significantly with regard to style of communication, expectations concerning roles, dealing with social distance and hierarchies, criticism in general, to name but a few examples.

Peer mentoring is a powerful tool for doctoral candidates to help each other manage challenging situations that arise during their doctoral studies. At the core of any peer mentoring session are the cases (i.e. the questions or problems) raised by the participants. Over four sessions, participants will practice using their own ex-periences and backgrounds in order to formulate and tackle cases. The goal of this workshop is to train participants to conduct peer mentoring sessions among themselves, without the supervision of an external trainer.

The workshop will cover the following topics:• How to structure and conduct sessions of peer mentoring

based on the success team concept• What peer mentoring offers? The importance of asking the

right questions in effective peer mentoring• Support others: How to listen and ask helpful questions – basic

questioning and listening techniques• Variation in the process: Different methods for group consul-

tation• Working with diversity: group organisation and dynamics• Possibilities and limitations of group mentoring

• short presentations on methods and background• individual and group exercises• reflective discussions

The complex and multifaceted nature of many tasks – from scien-tific research to publishing projects, assignments at work, or even personal transitions – can present us with a challenge. It is easy to feel like you’re standing at the base of a mountain, unable to see the peak for the clouds, with more questions than answers in your head. Where should I begin? What do I need to do? In situations like these, project management tools can be a valua-ble resource. They help you to reduce complexity and divide over- whelming tasks into small, easy-to-manage steps. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of project management and apply project management tools to your own doctoral or research projects. Our goal for this workshop is to plan a personal project or part of a pro-ject (depending on the scope) per participant.

• Using project management tools for your own projects • Defining project goals • Creating work breakdown structures and defining work pack-

ages • Planning milestones, procedures, and timetables • Planning resources• Analyzing project risks• Monitoring progress

• Input by the trainer• Individual and group work • Practical exercises • Work on individual participant projects

During this two-day workshop, you will train your presentation skills, receive individual feedback and have chances to improve in the following three essential areas:

1. Create Clear Content• Brainstorm: How can I serve my audience most effectively?

What could I say?• Reduce: What exactly do I want to say? What not? Set a clear

goal and up to three core messages.• Structure your talk appropriately.• Exemplify: find great examples, metaphors, comparisons, im-

ages, etc.

2. Design Proper Slides• Reduce your content and your visuals as much as possible.• Focus on illustrations and images instead of bullets.• Apply six important design principles to your slides.• Know how to deal with fonts, sizes, and an underlying grid.• 3. Be Convincing on Stage• Body language: where to put your hands – and other questions• Creating contact: eye contact and body movement• How to speak properly (this seminar does not include a voice

training)• How to involve your audience by including interaction

The course is a mixture of trainer input, practical exercises, and dis-cussing individual questions. You receive constructive feedback by peers and trainer.

Peer review is the key approach to assess quality in academia. Peer review is used to evaluate manuscripts intended for publication, to assess potential conference contributions (talks, posters), and to ex-amine funding applications. This workshop helps:

1. to understand the different manifestations of peer review2. to meet expectations of editors and reviewers3. to develop success strategies.

• the traditional peer review system: advantages and disadvan-tages

• alternative approaches: rationales and examples• what reviewers check: evaluation criteria• what editors want: expectations• what helps to succeed: strategies for authors• peer review involves critique: how to deal with criticism in dif-

ferent cultural settings

Participants explore articles and guidelines. They evaluate, synthe-size and discuss. During the workshop, they prepare a set of recom-mendations relevant for them. The main methods of this workshop are group work and plenum discussion. Every participant needs a notebook computer with internet access.

Due to the growing competitive pressure and precarious employ-ment at the academic job market, many scientists see themselves confronted with the quest for possible ‘exit strategies’ in manage-ment, industry, and other fields. At the same time, many scientists feel that their skills gained during their PhD are mostly not valua-ble to the job market outside academia. As a result, scientists often have a narrowed view on the various career opportunities that exist in and outside the academic ivory tower. The seminar aims at sup-porting participants in getting to know different academic career paths and the career options in the public, industry, and economy sector. Participants will be enabled to identify their personal inte-rests and motives as well as to recognize their ‘market value’. With this, the seminar shall also support scientists to pursue their uni-versity career out of conviction and not out of a sense of lacking prospects.

• Job market in/outside academia• academic profile• university career• career paths in public/economy sector• career motives• qualification analysis

Besides input from the trainer, participants will work in small groups, give short presentations, and use questionnaires/works-heets for self-analysis.

TEACHING IN LARGE CLASSESTeaching

After the course you will be able to • Describe how the shift from teaching to learning can be achie-

ved also in large classes• Formulate learning objectives appropriate for lecture formats• Choose appropriate teaching learning activities in alignment to

those objectives

Teaching large classes with 50+ participants is everyday life at a uni-versity. But since didactics tell us that teaching is not presenting, lecturing is often seen as inefficient and strenuous for students and teachers alike. In this workshop we will explore ways to make large class settings more beneficial for students and hopefully more fun for teachers.

• Input from teacher• Reflective phase individually and in groups• Teaching learning activities appropriate for large classes• Group work

HOW TO BECOME A GROUP LEADER – MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH GROUPSLeadership

Participants will become familiar with the basic principles of suc-cessful team management. They learn how to accurately assess different situations and to competently use appropriate leadership tools such as delegating, informing, making decisions, monitoring, moderating and promoting.

The challenge in managing research groups is to find a way to bring together different personalities and to motivate and support them to work independently within the framework of research projects. This requires a high level of social and personality competence as well as a basic attitude characterized by trust, appreciation, and congruity. Unlike courses that concentrate primarily on relating expert knowledge, this training is not just about cognitively proces-sing new information. Therefore, participants will be encouraged to practice productive patterns of behaviour with the help of practical team exercises and role plays.

Focal points:• Criteria for the composition of research groups and teams• Responsibilites of the team leader• Team roles and dynamics• Developing a team-oriented management style• Communication and interaction in and with the team• Dealing with obstacles and conflicts• Interactive workshop, short lecture style input, individual and

group exercises

GRANT PROPOSAL WRITING (ALL DISCIPLINES) Career Management

There are plenty of national and international funding program-mes with different funding schemes. Each scheme has its individual context and thematic focus, eligibility and funding rules, submissi-on and evaluation process, and evaluation criteria. Therefore, I will introduce a general process of grant proposal writing which you can apply to any funding programme. With this background knoweldge we will investigate those core aspects of winning grants which are most relevant for a successful communication with the reviewer.

We will consider the following topics:• Identification of the right funding scheme• The overall grant proposal writing process• Communicating with the reviewer• Setting up a concept: results, objectives, work plan• Mapping the research idea to the framework of the funding

programme and the reviewers’ perspectives• Structuring the proposal• Visualising the progress beyond state-of-the-art in a nutshell• The art of formulating the text and highlighting the impact

GETTING PUBLISHED & UNDERSTANDING THE REVIEW PROCESS (NATURAL SCIENCES) Career Management

• The main objective of the workshop is to demystify the process of peer review - a cornerstone of the scientific method.

• As future authors, participants learn how to get their research published by interacting professionally with journal editors.

• As future reviewers, participants learn how to help editors and authors to ensure the scientific integrity of published research.

• Module 1 focuses on the do's and dont's for authors to consider when writing a cover letter as part of the process of selecting a suitable journal for their manuscript.

• Module 2 provides reviewers with efficient strategies for evalu-ating a manuscript.

(Zulassung,

FAQS – CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (PDP)

The Professional Development Program is open to doctoral candi-dates and postdocs of Freie Universität and other research in stitu-tions.

Each course description provides information about the targeted subject area, skill level and the format of the course. Use these in-dicators to find courses that are appropriate for your educational objectives and developmental needs.

1. Course is related to your subject area: Please note that some workshops are specifically designed for parti-cipants of certain subject areas, e.g. the Natural and Life Sciences.

2. Course format meets your needs: The majority of our workshops are trainings. For some topics you can avail yourself of additional coaching sessions and open door talks.

3. Course matches your skill level: Does the course advance your level of skill and meet your parti-cular professional needs? For each course you will see a scale with four circles, symbolizing from left to right the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of the doctorate.
