RUNNING-IN PERIOD BEFORE DRIVING OFF

Following a few simple precautions for thefirst few hundred miles can add to the fu-ture performance, economy and long life ofyour car.

KEY WITH INTEGRATED

TRANSPONDER

On vehicles equipped with a DaewooImmobiliser System, two keys with anintegrated transponder are provided,which operate all the locks on the vehicle.Keep one of the two keys as a spare.

The key number is on the key numberplate. For vehicle security, keep the keynumber plate in a safe place, not in thevehicle. You should also record the keynumber in a safe place, not in the vehicle.

If you need additional keys, duplicates canbe obtained from your Daewoo Outlet upto a maximum of 3.See page 2-5 under Immobiliser Systemfor further details.

In case of loss, replacement keys areavailable from Oaewoo Outlets byquoting the key number.To protect your car from theft, an elec-tronic immobilisation system has beeninstalled in your Oaewoo.Only keys with the correct electroniccode can be used to start the car. Evenif a key has the same profile it will notstart the engine if the electronic codeis incorrect. Always obtain replacementor additional keys from your OaewooOutlet.

DOOR LOCKS

The front doors can be locked or unlockedfrom outside by using the key.

All doors can be locked or unlocked fromthe inside by pushing down or pulling upthe door lock button located on the windowsill on each door.

All doors, except the driver's, can belocked from the outside by pushing downthe door lock button then closing the door.The lock button on the driver's door can-not be pushed down when the door is open,thus preventing the driver from being in-advertently locked out.However, if the door handle is raised, thelock button on the driver's door can bepushed down when the door is open.

If you wish to lock the driver's door withoutusing the key, set the button in the lockposition before closing the door.The outside door handle must be held upwhile the driver's door is being closed.

Be careful not to lock your keys in thevehicle.

CENTRAL DOOR LOCKING

SYSTEM

By pressing down or pulling up the inte-rior lock button on the driver's door or byturning the key as far as it will go, alldoors are locked or unlocked.

NOTE

Always remove the ignition key andlock all doors when leaving yourvehicle unattended.

CHILD SAFETY DOOR LOCKS

When the metal latch beneath the lock oneither of the rear doors is pushedupwards, the door cannot be opened fromthe inside.Rear doors locked with the child safetymechanism can still be opened from theoutside provided that the door lock buttonis not pushed down.

FUEL TANK FILLER CAP

1. Pull the door lock button of the driver'sdoor upwards.

ELECTRIC WINDOW SWITCHES

The windows can be operated byswitches located in the driver's door arm-rest when the ignition switch is in the "on"position.

When the safety lock switch is depressedpower is cut to the individual door windowswitches. However, the driver can still op-erate all the windows using the switchesin the driver's door armrest.When the left-hand part of the door lockswitch is pressed, all the doors are locked.When the right-hand part of the door lockswitch is depressed, all the doors areunlocked.

Care must be taken when operatingthe electric windows. There is a risk ofinjury, particularly for children, and adanger that articles could becometrapped.

Make sure that all vehicle occupantsknow how to operate the windows cor-rectly.

If there are children on the rear seat,press the safety lock button to isolatethe individual window switches.

Keep a close watch on the windowswhen closing them. Ensure that no-thing becomes trapped in them.

Upon leaving the vehicle the driver mustremove the ignition key in order to pre-vent other vehicle occupants from op-erating the. windows (with a potentialrisk of injury).NOTE

If the system is overloaded, the powersupply is automatically cut off for ashort time.

Passengers' door window switches are lo-cated in the armrest of each door. Press thelower part of the switch to lower thewindow and the upper part of the switchto raise the window. Release the switchwhen the window reaches the desiredposition.When the safety lock switch is pressed,the passengers' windows cannot beoperated, except by the driver.

FOlding the exterior rear-view mirror*Push the exterior rear-view mirror to foldit.

The exterior mirrors will be released fromtheir supports under heavy impact for thesafety of passengers and pedestrians.The mirrors can be locked back intoposition with a light blow of the hand atright angles to the vehicle.

Take care when judging the size or dis-tance of a vehicle or other object seenin the side convex mirror. Be aware thatobjects will look smaller and appearfarther away than when viewed in a flatmirror.Use your interior rear-view mirror to de-termine the size and distance of ob-jects seen in the side convex mirror.

Convex rear-view mirror*The exterior mirror on the passenger'sside is convex if it says "OBJECTS INMIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEYAPPEAR".Use this mirror to get a wider view of theroad behind.

Adjust the exterior rear-view mirrors withthe adjusting lever so that you can seenot only each side of the road behind youbut also each side of your vehicle. Thishelps you determine the location ofobjects seen in the mirror.Simply move the adjusting lever in thedesired direction to adjust the position ofthe mirror.

CAUTION

Always adjust the mirror with the selec-tor set to the day position.Only use the night position if it isnecessary to reduce glare from theheadlights of vehicles behind you.Be aware that in this position you maynot be able to see some objects thatcould be seen in the day position.

The interior mirror can be adjusted up,down or sideways to obtain the best view.The interior mirror has day and nightpositions.Move the knob to the night position to re-duce glare from the headlights of vehiclesbehind you.

TILTABLE STEERING WHEEL

The steering wheel can be adjusted todifferent positions.

lThe steering wheel can be adjusted bypulling left-hand the control lever on theside of the steering column, moving thewheel to the desired position and thenreleasing the lever. In order to provideeasy access to the vehicle, the wheel canbe moved to its uppermost position whenleaving the car.

Do not adjust the tiftable steeringwheel while the vehicle is moving toavoid losing control of the vehicle.

FRONT SEAT SLIDE ADJUSTMENT

To move the seat forwards or backwards,pull up the control lever located under thefront of the seat, and hold it.Then slide the seat to the desired posi-tion and release the lever.

WARNING

Do not adjust the driver's seat whilstthe vehicle is moving to avoid losingcontrol of the vehicle.Make sure that the driver's seat isproperly adjusted before you startdriving.

WARNING

To avoid excessive seat-belt slack,which reduces the effectiveness ofthe seat-belts, make sure that theseats are adjusted before the seat-belts are fastened.

FRONT SEAT RECLINING

ADJUSTMENT

To adjust the seat back, rotate the knobat the side of the seat until the desiredangle is achieved.

The seat backs should always be ina fairly upright position when driving,or the effectiveness of the seat-beltsmay be reduced.The seat-belts are designed to offermaximum protection when the seatbacks are in the fully upright position.Make sure that the reclining seatbacks are properly adjusted beforeyou start driving.

DRIVER'S SEAT HEIGHT HEAD RESTRAINTS REAR SEAT ARMREST

The head restraints are designed to helpreduce the risk of neck injuries.

The pull-down rear seat armrest is locatedin the centre of the rear seat.

Adjust the top of the head restraintso that it is closest to the top of yourears.After adjusting the head restraint,ensure that it is locked in position.00 not drive with the head restraintremoved.

SEAT-BELT PRECAUTIONS

To protect you and your passengers in theevent of an accident, it is recommendedthat the seat-belts be worn by all occu-pants whilst the vehicle is in use. Seat-belts should be worn correctly.

Rear passengers not wearing seat-beltsare a danger to the driver and front pas-senger in the event of an accident.

The seat-belts are designed to be usedby only one person at a time : they arenot suitable for use by children below 6years of age. Suitable child seats, boostercushions should be fitted.

WARNING 0-1 -----~

To reduce the likelihood of injury toboth the pregnant woman and the un-born child, the lap belts should beworn as low as possible whenpregnant.

j CAUTION I IThe seat-belt will provide maximumprotection for its wearer if the seatback is adjusted to a fully uprightposition. When the seat back is re-clined, there is a greater risk that thepassenger will slide under the belt,especially in a forward impact, andmay be injured by the belt or bystriking the instrument panel.

CAUTION

NEVERWear the shoulder belt under thearm nearest the door.Use a belt for more than one per-son at a time.Wear the belts twisted or with thebuckle release button facing down-ward or inward.Let the belt system become dam-aged by a door or seat.Put anything into the opening wherethe safety belt passes through thetrim panel. This may jam the retrac-tor or damage the belt.

THREE-POINT SEAT-BELTS

Each Daewoo vehicle is equipped withthree-point seat-belts with automaticretractors, allowing freedom of bodymovement when driving at even, constantspeeds, although the spring-tensionedbelts are always a snug fit.This type of belt requires no length adjust-ment. Once worn, the belt adjusts itself tothe movement of the wearer, but in theevent of a sudden or strong shock, the beltautomatically locks to restrain the wearer'sbody.

To remove the belt, depress the red push-button on the buckle. The belt will retractautomatically.

INSERT to fasten

To lengthen, hold the plate at right anglesto the belt and pull on the belt. To shorten,pull the free end of the belt away fromthe tongue, then pull the belt clip to takeup the slack.

A lap belt is installed in the centre of therear seat.Insert the metal latch plate into the buckleuntil it locks.

CAUTION

Always be sure that the belt is posi-tioned across the shoulder as close toyour neck as possible and not on yourupper arm or neck. Failure to do socould reduce the amount of protectionin an accident and increase thechance of injury.

On seat-belts with a height-adjustable up-per anchorage point, pull the belt out,depress "A" and adjust the height.This is particularly important if a smallerperson has previously selected a lowerposition.Too high a position can impair comfort.

SEAT-BELT WARNING CHIME

The seat-belt warning chime will sound forabout 4 to 8 seconds when the ignitionswitch is in the "II" position unless thedriver's seat-belt is securely fastened.

CARE OF BELTS

Always keep the seat-belts clean and dry.Clean only with a mild soap solution orlukewarm water.Do not bleach or dye belts since this mayseverely weaken them. Make sure thatthe belt is not damaged or trapped bysharp edged objects.Periodically inspect all parts of the beltsand have damaged parts replaced. A beltwhich has been overstretched in an acci-dent must be replaced by a new one.Do not perform any alterations to yourvehicle's seat-belt system.

CAUTION

To help reduce the risk of personalinjury in collisions or sudden manoeu-vres, use the safety belts in accordancewith these instructions on their properuse and maintenance.Children small enough for child re-straints (as indicated on the label ofsuch restraints) should always travel inone. Accident statistics indicate childrenare safer when properly restrained inthe rear seat rather than in the frontseat. Accordingly, we recommend chil-dren be restrained in the rear seat.

DRIVER'S AIR BAG

The air bag is stored in the centre pad ofthe steering wheel.

The air bag Supplementary RestraintSystem (SRS) helps protect the driver'shead and chest against injuries in theevent of a collision.

C[JJThe air bag system activates during severecollisions which are either frontal or whenthe impact angle is up to 30° from straightahead.

The air bag inflates within milliseconds dur-ing a crash and forms a safety cushion forthe driver.

After the air bag completely inflates, itimmediately deflates so that it does notinterfere with the driver's visibility or abilityto steer and operate other controls.

The air bag inflates with considerable forceand speed. It is therefore important that thedriver's seat and seat back should be cor-rectly adjusted, for the air bag to be fullyeffective. The driver's seat should be ad-justed so that the steering wheel can bereached with the arms slightly angled.

When the air bag inflates, an operating noisemay be heard and a small amount ofsmoke-like gas will be released. The gas isharmless and does not indicate that thereis a fire.

WARNING

The air bag system will not be trig-gered in the event of a rear impact,side impact, rollover or minor fron-tal collision. The seat-belts musttherefore always be worn. The airbag system serves to supplementthe seat-belt.Never affix anything to or over thecentre of the steering wheel, as itcould cause injury when the air bagis triggered.Do not perform any alterations tothe components of the air bag sys-tem. The system can be triggeredabruptly if it is treated improperly.The steering wheel and instrumentpanel must only be removed by aDaewoo Outlet or Daewoo Autho-rised Service Operation.The air bag can be triggered onlyonce. It must then be replaced onlyby a Daewoo Outlet or DaewooAuthorised Service Operation.

Repairs to the steering wheel,steering column and air bag systemmust be carried out only by aDaewoo Outlet or Daewoo Autho-rised Service Operation. Injuriesmay result if the air bag is triggeredinadvertently.Do not stick anything on the steer-ing wheel and instrument panel orcover them with other materials.Clean them only with a dry or adamp cloth. Do not use any aggres-sive cleaning agents.The air bag system must only bedisposed of by a Daewoo Outletor Daewoo Authorised ServiceOperation.Seat-belts must always be wornand a sufficient distance keptbetween the driver and the wheel.

FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS

Use Unleaded Fuel Only.Unleaded fuel with a Research OctaneNumber 95 must be used in yourDaewoo vehicle.

Fuel quality has a decisive influence onthe power output, driveability and life ofthe engine. The additives contained in thefuel play an important role in this respect.You should therefore use only high-qualityfuels containing additives.

Fuels with too Iowan octane number cancause pre-ignition or detonation. Daewoocannot be held liable for the resultantdamage.

Leaded fuel must never be used. It willcause the catalytic converter to become in-effective and the emission control systemto malfunction.This can also result in increased mainte-nance expense.

To avoid the accidental use of leaded fuel,the larger nozzle used with leaded fuel atservice stations cannot be inserted intothe fuel tank opening of your Daewoovehicle.

Do not Use MethanolFuels containing methanol (wood alcohol)should not be used in your Daewoo. Thistype of fuel can reduce vehicle performanceand damage components of the fuel sys-tem.

Operation in Foreign CountriesIf you are going to drive your Daewoo inanother country, be sure to :

Observe all regulations regarding reg-istration and insurance.Check that suitable fuel is available.

IGNITION SWITCH

OFFThe engine can be turned off withoutlocking the steering wheel.

LOCKThe steering is locked by removingthe key. Rotate the steering wheeluntil the lock is engaged.For easier key operation when unlock-ing, move the steering gently fromright to left and turn the key to the "I"position.

ONThis position turns on the ignition sys-tem and the electrical accessories.

STARTThis position activates the starter mo-tor, starting the engine.Release the key when the engine starts,and it will be returned to the "II" posi-tion automatically.

WARNING

1. Never remove the key while driv-ing. If the key is removed, thesteering wheel will lock. This maycause the driver to lose control ofthe vehicle and could result in seri-ous vehicle damage or personalinjury.

2. Never turn the key to the "B" or "/"position when the car is stillmoving.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE

Make sure that the area around thevehicle is clear.The maintenance items in this manualshould be checked periodically, e.g.each time you check the engine oil.Check that all the windows and lightsare clean.Visually inspect the tyres for their ap-pearance and condition. Also checkthe tyre pressures for proper inflation.Adjust your seat position and head re-straints.Adjust the interior and exterior mirrors.Fasten your seat-belt and ask all pas-sengers to do likewise.Check the operation of the warninglights when the key is turned to the "II"position.

STARTING THE ENGINE

Automatic transmission*:Move the selector lever to "P"(Park)or "N"(Neutral), although "P" is pre-ferred.The starter is designed not to operate ifthe selector lever is in one of the driv-ing positions.

3. Crank the engine without touchingthe accelerator pedal by turning theignition key to the "III" start position.Release the key when the engine starts.If the engine starts, but fails to run,repeat the above procedure.

CAUTION

Do not operate the starter for more than15seconds at a time. If the engine doesnot start, wait 10 seconds before crank-ing again, otherwise the starter motorcould be damaged.

4. Warm-upAllow the engine to idle for at least30 seconds after starting. Drive at amoderate speed for a short distancefirst, especially in cold weather.

NOTEIf the engine has become flooded dur-ing starting, slowly depress the accel-erator pedal fully, hold it in this positionand start the engine.

IMMOBILISER SYSTEM

The Daewoo Immobiliser System providesan additional theft deterrent to the vehiclein which it is installed and prevents it frombeing started by unauthorised persons.

The valid key for a vehicle equipped witha Daewoo Immobiliser System is a me-chanical ignition key with an integratedtransponder, which is electronically coded.The transponder is placed invisibly in theignition key. Only valid ignition keys canbe used to start the engine.

(Non transponder keys may only open thedoors.) The immobiliser system isolatesthe power supply to the ignition system,fuel pump and fuel injectors.

Driving offAfter starting the engine, fully depressthe foot brake pedal before shifting theselector lever to the "D", "R", "3", or"L" position. Be sure the vehicle is fullystopped before attempting to shift theselector lever into "R" or "P".

1. Keep the foot brake pedal depressedand shift into a driving gear.

The automatic transmission in yourDaewoo vehicle is an electronically con-trolled four speed transmission. The 4thgear is an overdrive function.

The position of the selector lever is indicatedon the right-hand side of the selector leverunder the selector position indicator in theinstrument panel.

It can also be switched off by pressing the"WINTER" mode switch again, selectingdrive range "3" or "R", holding the accel-erator pedal in the kickdown position forlonger than two seconds, or turning off theignition.

DRIVING TIPS FOR AUTOMATIC

TRANSMISSION*

Driving offAfter starting the engine and before shift-ing into a drive range, depress the brakepedal since the vehicle will otherwise startto "creep". Never use the accelerator andbrake pedals simultaneously.

For normal driving conditions the "D"position should be selected.

If the accelerator pedal is depressed gentlyand evenly the transmission will shift intothe fuel-saving higher gears at an earlystage. The drive range needs to bechanged manually only in exceptionalcases. Select "3" and "L" only when auto-matic shifting up is to be avoided or ifadditional use is to be made of the enginebraking effect.

Stopping the carThe selector lever can be left in the cho-sen drive range with the engine running.

When stopping on gradients engage thehand brake or depress the brake pedal.Do not increase the engine revolutions toensure smooth idling while standing if adrive range has been selected.

Switch off the engine if stopping for alengthy period, e.g. in traffic jams or atlevel crossings.

Before leaving the vehicle, apply the handbrake, then place the selector lever in po-sition "P" and remove the ignition key.

Rocking the carIf it becomes necessary to rock the car tofree it from sand, mud, snow or a hole,move the selector lever from "0" to "R" in arepeat pattern while simultaneously apply-ing light pressure to the accelerator pedal.Do not race the engine and avoid suddenacceleration.

This applies only to the exceptional circum-stances mentioned above.

Manoeuvering the carTo manoeuvre the car back and forth dur-ing attempts to park or in garage entran-ces utilise the above-mentioned creepingeffect. Regulate your speed by lightly re-leasing the brake pedal.

Never press the accelerator and brake ped-als simultaneously.

The standard braking system is designedfor braking performance under a widerange of driving conditions, even when thevehicle is loaded to its full rated vehicleload capacity

If the brake pedal can be depressedfurtherll1an normal, it may be due to a lackof adjustment of the rear drum brakes. Tofind oul jf this is the case, drive backwardsand forwards a few limes, applying thebrakes firmly when going in each direction.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM

(ABS)

The anti-lock braking system controls thewheels so that they will not lock when brak-ing abruptly or when braking on a slipperyroad. The system detects the wheel rota-tion rate and electronically controls thepressure applied to the brakes. Slight vibra-tion accompanied by noise usually occurswhile the ASS is operating. Such vibrationand noise is not a problem but simplyindicates that the ASS is functioningnormally.If an abnormality occurs in the system, theanti-lock braking system is cancelled. VENTILATION AND HEATING

Air mixture system: by mixing cold andhot air the temperature can be regulatedwithout delay and thereby held practicallyconstant at all speeds.

The rate of air flow is determined by the fan.The fan should therefore be switched on ifrequired even when driving.

Fresh air is drawn in at the front of thewindscreen, heated as required and fedinto the vehicle. Ventilation takes placeat the rear via apertures at the sides orthrough plastic inserts concealed by thetailgate.Heating the rear foot area: cold or heatedair is routed to the rear foot area via ductsunderneath the carpet.(*)

OPERATING TIPS FOR

COOLING SYSTEM .

• If the car has been parked in directsunlight, open the windows before op-erating.

• To clean misted windows on rainy days,decrease the temperature inside thecar by operating the air conditioning.This is most effective during rainyweather and high humidity.

• When driving in heavy traffic areas, in-sufficient cooling may occur becauseof stopping and slowing down of thecar. In this case, increase the fanspeed.

• Keep the windows closed while the airconditioning is in operation.

• When the air conditioning system isnot being used for a month or more,you must run the engine at idle andturn the system on for a few minutesonce each week, even during wintermonths. This will keep the compres-sor and seals properly lubricated andwill prolong the service life of the sys-tem.

ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM

The identification card, stamped with thesecurity code number, is provided with thevehicle. Keep it in a safe place, not in thevehicle.

The audio security system activates imme-diately whenever the audio is disconnectedfrom the battery. It is protected by a secu-rity code.

To make the audio system operate again,you must enter a four-figure security codewith the pre-set station buttons.

The security warning letter "COdE" will beflashed in the L.C.D when the audio sys-tem is switched off and disappears whenaudio system is switched on.

How to enter the security code

1. When the audio system is reconnec-ted to the battery, the security warningletter "COdE" will be flashed in theL.C.D.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II)position and switch on the audio sys-tem by pushing the power on/off but-ton.

3. "COdE" will disappear and the initialsetting indicator "- - - -" will appear.

4. Enter a four-figure security code us-ing the preset station buttons.

5. If the code is correct, the radio FMmode is switched on after about 2seconds.(if the cassette tape is insertedin the slot, the cassette mode isswitched on.)

6. If the code is incorrect, the initialsetting indicator "- - - -" will appearimmediately.To operate the audio system, the cor-rect code should be entered.Repeat, the above procedure from 4 to6.

7. If 3 incorrect codes are entered, "Err"will be flashed in the L.C.D, and theaudio system cannot be operated.The audio system should be discon-nected from the battery until "Err" dis-appears on the L.C.D.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

1. We recommend that tapes belowC-90 (the playing time: 90 minutes)be used. C-120 tape is extremely thinand its use should be avoided if at allpossible.

2. If a loop of tape has formed, it must betaken up by turning one of the spoolswith a suitable object such as ball penor pencil.

4. Never leave cassettes inserted in theoperating position with the tape playerinoperative.

5. Clean the head of the tape playercarefully with a cotton applicatorsoaked in alcohol. If the tape playeris used for more than one hour everyday, the head should be cleaned onceor twice a month.If it is used very infrequently, you onlyneed to clean the head every two orthree months.

6. Do not oil the revolving parts of thetape player.

7. Keep tapes in their plastic cases whennot in use.

3. Store cassettes where they will not beexposed to high temperature, directsunlight, magnetic fields, tape abrasionor dirt.

With the ignition on, the audio system canbe switched on by pushing the power but-ton.If the ignition switch is turned to the offposition ("8" or "I" position) while the audiosystem is operating and the key is not re-moved from the ignition switch, the audiosystem is operated.When the key is removed the audio sys-tem is switched off automatically.

WHEEL CHANGING

• Replace the wheel cover.

• Raise the vehicle by turning thecrank handle clockwise until the jacklifting head fits firmly into the notch andthe wheel is off the ground (about3cm).Do not raise the vehicle more than ne-cessary.

Pry the wheel cover off with the wheelnut wrench.Loosen the wheel bolt one turn eachwith the wheel nut wrench, but do notremove any bolt until the wheel hasbeen raised off the ground.

• Turn the jack screw clockwise fourturns and place the jack at the frontor rear jacking location closest to thewheel you are changing. Place thejack under the jacking point at theside sill as shown in illustration.

STARTING THE ENGINE

WITH JUMP LEADS

A car with a discharged battery may bestarted by transferring electrical powerfrom a battery in another car.

This may be dangerous however, andany deviation from the following in-structions could lead to personal in-jury or property damage resultingfrom a battery explosion, battery acidor electrical (short circuit) burns, aswell as damage to the electrical sys-tems in both vehicles.• Never expose the battery to

naked flames or sparks.• Do not allow the battery fluid to

come into contact with eyes, skin,fabrics or painted surfaces. Thefluid contains sulfuric acid whichcan cause injuries and damage.

• To lesson the risk of injury weareye protection when working nearany battery.

PERFORM OPERATIONS IN THECORRECT ORDER!1. Make sure that the battery providing

the jump start has the same voltage asthe battery in your car (i.e. 12V).

2. Do not lean over the battery duringjump starting.

3. Do not allow the terminals of one leadto touch those of the other lead.

4. Apply the hand brake.Vehicles with an automatic transmis-sion: set the selector lever to the "P"Vehicles with a manual transmission:place the gear shift lever in the neutral.

5. Connect the leads in the order shownin the picture.

Connect the first jump lead from thepositive terminal of the battery provid-ing the jump start (identified by "+"sign on battery case or terminal) tothe positive terminal of the dischargedbattery. Connect the first end of theother jump lead to the negative termi-nal of the battery providing the start(identified by "-") and the other endto ground on the other vehicle e.g.engine block or screw connection in

• •engine suspension.Do not connect the lead to the nega-tive terminal of the discharged battery.The connection point should be as faraway from the discharged battery aspossible.

6. The engine of the vehicle providing thestart can be allowed to run duringstarting. Start the vehicle with thedischarged battery as usual.

7. Reverse the above sequence exactlywhen removing the leads.

TOWING THE VEHICLE

Switch on the hazard warning flashers ofboth vehicles.Secure the rope on the vehicle as tight aspossible.Place the gear shift lever in neutral (withan automatic transmission - place selec-tor lever in "N").Switch on the ignition to release thesteering column lock and to permit theoperation of the brake lamps, horn andwindscreen wipers.It is advisable to avoid jerky movementsand to drive slowly during the towing op-erations. More brake pedal pressure isnecessary for effective braking since thebrake servo unit will not be operating.On vehicles with power steering, greatersteering force is necessary since this unitwill not be operative .

To prevent the entry of exhaust fumesfrom the towing vehicle into the passen-ger compartment of the towed vehicle,close the windows and stop entry of airvia the heating and ventilation vents.If the transmission is defective, the frontof the vehicle must be raised.

Vehicles with an automatic transmissionshould not be towed with a rope. Theyshould be suspend towed as shown.

ROCKING THE VEHICLE

If it is necessary to rock the vehicle to freeit from snow, sand or mud, move the se-lector lever on an automatic transmissionmodels from "0" to "R" in a repeat patternwhile depressing the accelerator gently.(On manual transmission models, movethe gearshift lever from first to reversegear.)Do not race the engine. If you are still stuckafter a minute or two of rocking, have thevehicle pulled out to avoid overheating andpossible damage to the transmission.

Do not spin the front wheels exces-sively, as this may cause personal in-jury and/or premature failure of thedriveline components.

Also,you should avoid overloading and otherabusive use.The maximum loaded trailer weight you canpull with your vehicle depends on your in-tended use and what special equipment hasbeen installed on it. Trailer LightsMake sure your trailer is equipped with lightswhich meet country and local require-ments. Always check for the proper op-eration of all trailer lights before you startto tow.

Alwaysleave just enough slack to permit fullturning. Never allow safety chains to dragon the road.

Towing tipsThe cooling fan is driven electrically. Itscooling capacity is thus not dependent onthe engine speed. At high engine speedsa lot of heat is produced and at low enginespeeds correspondingly less heat is pro-duced. For this reason, when driving uphilldo not shift down into a lower gear whenthe vehicle can still climb the hill in thehigher gear.When driving uphill do not drive faster than30 km/h (19 mph) in first gear or 50 km/h(31 mph) in second gear.

On vehicles with automatic transmissiontowing the brake type caravan/trailer,when driving gradients of 10% or more donot exceed 15 km/h (9 mph) in first gearor 25 km/h (16 mph) in second gear.Make sure that you have enough roomwhen cornering and avoid suddenmanceuvres.• Before driving, make sure that the

lighting system of the trailer worksproperly.

• Observe the legal maximum speedsfor towing.

• Avoid abrupt starts, acceleration orstops.

A NOTE ON SAFETY

To avoid the possibility of injury from thecooling fan, carry out all engine checkswith the ignition switched off so that thefan will not operate.The fan is controlled by ECM (electroniccontrol module) and consequently maystart to operate unexpectedly if the ignition•IS on.

When the ignition is on, it is also highlydangerous to touch live parts as the elec-tronic ignition system has a greater currentthan conventional systems.

ENGINE OIL

Engine oil and filter change.Engine oil changes are to be carried outdepending on time intervals and mileage in-tervals, since oil looses its lubrication prop-erties not only through engine operationbut also through ageing.Under exceptional conditions e.g. frequentcold starts or predominantly urban traffic andstop-and-go traffic, the engine oil and en-gine oil filter should be changed at shorterintervals than the recommended mainten-ance schedule.

Engine oil filter elements should be re-placed at the same time with engine oil.

Checking procedure

Pull out the oil dipstick, wipe it and reinsertit.Pull it out again and check that the oillevel is between max. and min. levelmarks. Also check the oil on the dipstickfor contamination.

The oil should not go above the "max" markon the dipstick. This would lead, for ex-ample, to increased oil consumption, foul-ing of the spark plugs and excessive for-mation of carbon residue.When replenishing, use the same gradeof oil as used at the last oil change.

COOLANT LEVEL

The cooling system is filled with a glycolbase coolant.In the correct concentration the coolantprovides excellent corrosion and freezeprotection for the entire cooling and heat-ing system and must therefore not be re-placed by plain water even in summer.The coolant level should be full in the ra-diator and slightly above the "COLD" markon the coolant surge tank when the engineis cool. The level rises with the engine atoperating temperature and drops againwhen the engine cools down.If the level falls below the "COLD" mark,add enough 50/50 water and ethylene gly-col anti-freeze mix, to provide freezing andcorrosion protection, to bring the level toa little over the "COLD" mark.

To ensure proper functioning, efficiencyand durability of the automatic transmis-sion, it is of the utmost importance that thefluid is always kept at the proper level.The level must therefore be checked at theintervals specified in this manual. The dip-stick bears the markings "MIN" (top-up)and "MAX" (full).The level must be checked with the enginerunning and the selector lever in position"P". On a cold transmission, the check isperformed using the side of the dipstickmarked "+20°C", while for a transmissionat operating temperature the sidemarked(94°C) should be used.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION

FLUID LEVEL

Check the fluid level a couple of minutesafter shutting off the engine.Make sure the vehicle is on level ground.Remove the transmission fluid filler plug.The fluid level should be up to the bottomof the plug hole.If the fluid level is low, replenish the trans-mission fluid until it reaches the bottom ofthe plug hole.Reinstall the filler plug and tighten it se-curely.

CAUTION

After driving the vehicle, the transmis-sion fluid temperature may be highenough to burn you. Wait until the fluidand filler plug is cool enough to touchwith your bare hands before inspectingthe transmission fluid.

Empty and use oil containers must notbe disposed of in the household refusewaste.Use your local authorised waste dis-posal facilities.

BRAKE FLUID

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, and thus ab-sorbs humidity. Excessive moisture in thebrake fluid may adversely affect thesafety of the hydraulic braking system.It is, therefore, necessary to change thebrake fluid every 2 years.Brake fluid is poisonous and will alsodamage the paint finish of your car. Thefluid level in the container must not behigher than the "MAX" mark or lower thanthe "MIN" mark.For replenishing use only the specifiedbrake fluid.After removing the filler cap, top up tothe "MAX" mark and tighten the capsecurely afterwards.Low fluid level can indicate a leak in thebraking system.Have the system checked at your near-est Daewoo Outlet.

Battery terminals should be disconnected af-ter stopping the engine.Check the battery terminals for corrosion(a white or yellowish powder). To removeit, cover the terminals with a solution ofbaking soda and water. It will bubble up andturn brown. When this stops, wash it offwith plain water. Dry off the battery with acloth or paper towel.Coat the terminals with petroleum jelly tohelp prevent future corrosion.If the terminals are severely corroded,clean them with baking soda and water.Use a wrench to loosen and remove thecables from the terminals. Alwaysdisconnect the negative (-) cable firstand reconnect it last. Clean the batteryterminals with a terminal cleaning tool orwire brush. Reconnect and tighten thecable, then coat the terminals withpetroleum jelly.

For best battery service, do the following.1. Keep the battery securely mounted.2. Keep the battery top clean and dry.3. Keep the terminals and connections

clean, tight and coated with petroleumjelly or terminal grease.

4. Rinse off any spilled electrolyte imme-diately with a solution of water and bak-ing soda.

Fitting new tyresIt is recommended that radial tyres be fit-ted in complete sets. They should be fit-ted in pairs with tyres of the same makeon each axle.

Winter tyresIf winter tyres are used they must be fittedto all 4 wheels. Do not exceed the maximumspeed specified by the tyre manufacturer.When using winter tyres, the tyre pressuressupplied by the tyre manufacturer must beadhered to.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Have all maintenance work carried out by aDaewoo Outlet or Daewoo AuthorisedService Operation at the intervals speci-fied by Daewoo. You can then be certainthat all components of the vehicle's elec-trical, injection and ignition systems will beoperating correctly, that your vehicle hasa low level of pollutant emission and thatthe catalytic converter system will have along life.

You should therefore avoid:• Frequent repeated cold starts.• Actuation of the starter for an unneces-

sarily long time during starting (fuel isinjected during the starting procedure).

• Allowing the tank to become empty (anirregular fuel supply leads to overheat-ing).

• Starting the engine by pushing ortowing (unburnt fuel may enter thecatalytic converter): use jump leads.

Fuel injection, ignition, idling and overrunfuel cut-off are controlled electronically.

If the indicator light comes on with theengine running, a fault has occurred. Theelectronic system switches to an emer-gency running programme so that drivingmay be continued. Consult a DaewooOutlet or Daewoo Authorised ServiceOperation to remedy the fault.

Do not drive for a lengthy period with theengine control indicator light illuminated,as this may damage the catalytic conver-ter, increase fuel consumption and impairthe vehicle's driveability.

ENGINE CONTROL INDICATOR(SERVICE ENGINE SOONLIGHT)

The engine control indicator light comeson when the ignition is switched on andremains illuminated during starting.The light goes out shortly after the enginestarts to run.

If the engine control indicator light comeson briefly and then goes out again this isnormal and does not indicate a systemfault.

If unburnt fuel enters the catalytic con-verter, combustion may occur there, re-sulting in overheating and irreparabledamage to the catalytic converter.

Leaded fuel will damage the catalytic con-verter and parts of the electronic system,thereby rendering them inoperative.

The fuel tank filler neck is of a narrowdesign so that a dispensing purnp forleaded fuel cannot be inserted.

Damage to the catalytic converter or thevehicle may result if the following pointsare not observed:• Consult a Daewoo Outlet or Daewoo

Authorised Service Operation asquickly as possible in the event ofmisfiring, irregular engine running fol-lowing a cold start, a significant loss ofengine power or other unusual mal-functions which may indicate a fault inthe ignition system. Do not touch halogen bulbs with barehands. Greasy fingers will cause stains,eventually resulting in a dull light.

Inadvertently stained bulbs may be cleanedwith a clean non-fluffy cloth, using alcoholor white spirits.

.CLEANING AGENTS

Follow the manufacturer's advice whenevercleaning agents or other chemicals areused, inside or outside the vehicle. Somecleaners may be poisonous or flammable,and improper use may cause personal in-jury or damage. When cleaning the insideor outside of the vehicle, do not use volatilecleaning solvents such as: acetone, lacquerthinners, enamel reducers, nail polish re-movers: or such cleaning materials as laun-dry soaps, bleaches or reducing agents,except as noted in the fabric cleaning ad-vice on stain removal. Never use carbontetrachloride, fuel, benzene, or naphtha forany cleaning purpose. Open all the vehicledoors for ventilation when any cleaningagents or other chemicals are used in theinterior. Overexposure to some vapors mayresult in a health problem which is morelikely to occur in small, unventilated spaces.To avoid possible permanent discolourationof light coloured seats, do not let materialswith non-fast colours come in contact withseat trim materials until these materials aretotally dry. This includes certain types ofcasual clothing, such as coloured denims,corduroys, leathers and suedes: also dec-orative paper, etc.

CARE AND CLEANING OF

THE INTERIOR

With the use of modern trim materials, it isvery important that you use proper clean-ing techniques and cleaners. Failing to dothis on the first cleaning may result in wa-ter spots, spot rings, or setting of stains orsoils-all of which are more difficult to re-move in a second cleaning.

Dust and loosen dirt that collects oninterior fabrics should be frequentlyremoved with a vacuum cleaner or softbristle brush. Wipe vinyl or leather trimregularly with a clean damp cloth. Normaltrim soils, spots, or stains can be cleanedwith cleaners:

Safety belt care• Keep belts clean and dry.• Clean safety belts only with a mild

soap and lukewarm water.• Do not bleach or dye belts since this

may severely weaken them.

GLASS SURFACES

Glass surfaces should be cleaned on aregular basis. The use of a glass cleaneror a liquid household glass cleaner willremove normal tobacco smoke and dustfilms sometimes caused by ingredientsused in vinyls and interior plastics.Never use abrasive cleaners on any vehicleglass, as they may cause scratches. Ifabrasive cleaners are used on the inside ofthe rear window, any electric demisterelement may be damaged. Avoid placingdecals on the inside rear window, sincethey may have to be scraped off later. Anytemporary license, etc. should not beattached across the demister grid.

Cleaning the outside of windscreenIf your windscreen is not clear after usingthe windscreen washer, or if the wiperblade chatters when running, wax or an-other material may be on the blade orwindscreen.Clean the outside of the windscreen withcleaning powder or an equivalent non ab-rasive cleaner. Your windscreen is cleanif beads do not form when rinsing withwater.

Exterior finishThe paint finish on your vehicle providesbeauty, depth of colour, gloss retentionand durability.

Washing your vehicleThe best way to preserve your vehicle'sfinish is to keep it clean by frequentwashing. Wash the vehicle in lukewarm orcold water.

Do not use hot water or wash your ve-hicle in the direct rays of the sun. Do notuse strong soap or chemical detergents.All cleaning agents should be flushedpromptly from the surface and not al-lowed to dry on the finish.

Daewoo vehicles are designed to operateunder normal environmental conditionsand to withstand the natural elements.However, unusual conditions, such ashigh pressure car washes, may causewater to enter inside the vehicle.

Polishing and waxingPeriodic polishing and waxing is recom-mended to remove surface residue fromyour paint finish. Approved products aresupplied through your Daewoo Outlet.

Protecting exterior bright metal partsBright metal parts should be cleaned regu-larly to keep their luster. Washing withwater is all that is usually needed.

Use special care with aluminum trim. Toavoid damaging protective trim, never useautomotive or chrome polish, steam, orcaustic soap to clean aluminum. A coatingof wax, rubbed to a high polish, isrecommended for all bright metal parts.

Cleaning aluminum wheels, rallywheels, and wheel coversPreserve the original appearance of wheelsor wheel covers by keeping them clean andfree from build-up of road dirt and/or roadsalt. Regular cleaning is recommended. Donot use abrasive cleaners or cleaningbrushes, as they could damage the finish.

Your car was designed to resist corrosion.Special materials and protective finisheswere used on most parts of your car whenit was built to help maintain a goodappearance, strength and reliable opera-tion. Some parts which normally are notvisible (such as certain parts located inthe engine compartment and the under-body of the vehicle) are such that surfacerust will not affect their reliability. There-fore, corrosion protection is not neededor used on these parts.

Sheet metal damageIf your car is damaged and requires sheetmetal repair or replacement, make sure thebody repair shop applies proper anti-corrosion material to the parts repaired orreplaced so that corrosion protection isrestored. (Also see "Finish damage" whichfollows.)

Foreign material depositsCalcium chloride and other salts, ice melt-ing agents, road oil and tar, tree sap, birddroppings, chemicals from industrial chim-neys and other foreign matter may dam-age vehicle finishes if left on paintedsurfaces.

Prompt washing may not completely re-move all of these deposits. Other clean-ers may be needed. When using chemicalcleaners, be sure they are safe for use onpainted surfaces.

Finish damageAny stone chips, fractures or deepscratches in the finish should be repairedpromptly. Bare metal will corrode quicklyand may develop into a major repair ex-pense. Minor chips and scratches can berepaired with touch-up materials. Largerareas of finish damage can be correctedin your outlets' body and paint shop.

Underbody maintenanceCorrosive materials used for ice and snowremoval and dust control can collect on theunderbody. If these materials are notremoved, accelerated corrosion (rust) canoccur on underbody parts such as fuellines, frame, floor pan and the exhaustsystem even though they have been pro-vided with corrosion protection.

At least every spring, flush these mater-ials from the underbody with plain water.Take care to clean any areas where mudand other debris can collect. Sedimentpacked in closed areas of the frame shouldbe loosened before being flushed. If de-sired, your Daewoo Outlet can do thisservice for you.

WARNINGWhen an engine is washed, fuel, greaseand oil residues are washed off. There-fore you should use only a filling sta-tion or a Oaewoo Outlet who has oilseparator equipment in the car washbay.

Used engine oil, brake fluid, antifreeze,batteries and tyres should be disposedof by using the local authorised wastedisposal facilities, or have them dis-posed of by the vendor who is under astatutory obligation to do so when youreplace them.

On no account must any of these itemsbe placed in the household refuse binsor the fluids poured down the drains.

Everyone should be concerned aboutenvironmental protection.
