Daedalus and IcarusDuring your drama lessons you have been looking at the Myth of Daedalus and Icarus set in ancient Greece.

Daedalus and Icarus were trying to escape from the Island of Crete ruled by the brutal King Minos.

Icarus did not follow the instructions of his father; not to fly too close to the sun. Because of this he fell to the ground.

Task One: Objects

You have been asked to build a flying machine, which you will escape from Crete on. You are only allowed to take 3 items with you.

Imagine if you were asked to leave your house now, which 3 items from your home would you take with you. (This should not include any family members or pets!)

1. Sketch and describe the objects, explaining why they are important to you. 2. Describe your items- colour, texture, what you can see, feel, hear, taste, smell

Task Two: Diary Entry

You should now write a diary entry as a character who lives in Crete. Your character is trying to help to build the flying machine so your family can escape from Crete and King Minos.

Before you write your diary, you should think about:• The name of your character• The age of your character (Remember children and adults

may have a different understanding about what is happening)

• The feelings of your character. (Are they scared about getting found out?/ worried about

the dangers of the flying machine?/ excited about leaving Crete?)

Research into another Greek Myth or find out more information about some of the Greek Gods on this slide.

Challenge: Make a poster displaying your understanding of the myths or Greek GodsOrWrite a script showing your understanding of the characters/ story

Task Three: Greek Myth Research

Task Four: Creating a Crossword or Wordsearch

Using your understanding of the Greek Myths create a wordsearch or design a crossword.

Task Five: Monologue

What is a monologue?A monologue is a dramatic speech from one character, which reveals information about

themselves.

Write a monologue from the point of view of a character, who is just about to set off on the

flying machine with their family.

-What are you worried about?-What do you see, hear, touch, feel?

-Were you excited about the adventure?

Challenge 1: Practice speaking this monologue out loud. Think of the different ways you could

say the lines.

Challenge 2: You could even annotate (mark on the script) how you would perform it using

some of the vocabulary in the grid. e.g. I would say this using an angry tone

Task Five: Storyboard

You should plan a scene which shows what has happened to your family after you escape from Crete on the flying machine.

You need to plan:- Where the flying machine lands - Does this place already have people living there? If

so, are they happy to share their land?- Are there any dangers within the landscape?- E.g.

volcanoes/ dangerous animals, etc.

You should plan this scene as a storyboard, using pictures and descriptions to explain what happens at each part of the scene.

Task Six: Set Design

You have been asked to design a set for a scene showing the location your flying machine has landed.
