Heidi Wanders Hills of Jones County Heidi, a stray horse brought to us by the Sheriff of Jones County, got a new start in life at the Abilene Animal Shelter. Since the Shelter has two large fenced lots (which we do not), director Aaron Vannoy is helping us place stray horses. Heidi arrived on Thursday and went to a new home on Saturday! We have placed several other horses through our partnership with the City of Abilene. Should a horse fail to find a home, we would place it in foster care, but so far everyone has gone home quickly. Breeding but not Feeding! Always inspect every dog that a breeder owns if you are puppy shopping! An out of town breeder turned this starved Pointer in at the pound. Our vet confirmed that the dog just had not been fed! We suspect she was no longer making them money. The case is still under investigation. Starving Cowgirl Now Ready to Rodeo Emaciated little Sofia was brought to our office one afternoon by a lady who found her. The little Chihuahua was starving to death, but we soon had her ready to rodeo! Break a Leg Twice for Good Luck? Tiny little Amy was lying in Sick Bay at the Abilene Animal Shelter. No one knew how her leg had been broken; and, worse, it was healing all wrong. Dr. Allen Bolt had to re-break Amy’s little leg to make the correct repairs. Now she is healing quickly and already flying around. Tropicana Graduates, Fears Job Market Our beautiful cat Tropicana was picked up by a staff member at a local university who works to bring us stray (wild) cats for spay/ neuter. Tropicana turned out to be a very lovable cat, and having graduated from college is now ready for a home. PetSmart Grooms Our Dogs...For FREE! PetSmart provides a grooming “academy” for its new groomers. Of course, they need dogs to groom and the most recent class cleaned and groomed 15 our dogs for free as part of their training. Wow, they did a terrific job. 4620 N. Plus, our first ever Rescued Dog Reunion brought rescued dogs of all breeds to the event to compete for prizes. We hope you will be one of our sponsors for the 2011 Dachshund Races on Thursday, July 21. This year the Dachshund Races will be held on a Thursday evening at the beautiful Festival Gardens in Nelson Park. Our Rescued Dog Reunion starts at 6:30 pm and the Dachshund Races follow at about 7:00 pm. Rudy Fernandez with KEAN will be our announcer again this year. Our races this year are dedicated to Moose the Dachshund. Moose was kicked in the head by a horse and later stepped on as well, damaging his back. Worst of all, his owners failed to get medical care for him and left him out in the pasture, staggering to walk and with internal injuries. Moose was a student’s pet living in a college dorm until they were busted! He then went to live with some friends on a farm. Things went downhill from there, reminding us that not everyone should have a pet! Fortunately, someone brought Moose to us. Dr. Allen Bolt has been caring for Moose, and the Dachshund is making steady progress. Moose may not be racing, but he will be cheering everyone on and remind- ing us that events like the Dachshund Races are the key to raising the funds we need to help sick and injured cats and dogs every day of the year.
