Are you On Board? In a few weeks, members from all over the District will come together in West Palm Beach, Florida to attend the District 47, 2011 Fall Conference. How about you? Are you on Board? At this conference, we will celebrate the success of our members and show our appreciation to you for achieving success in your Clubs. We will also hear the funniest speakers from nine Divisions, each being the winner of their Division’s Humorous Speech Contest. Also, some of the most analytical minds in our District will compete in the Evaluation Contest. We look forward to seeing and sharing with you during this very special occasion. See you at the Crowne Plaza November 4 – 6.

Are you on board to achieve at least one education award this year? There is no greater feeling than to hear the applause of fellow Toastmasters as you are recognized for achieving an education award. To top it off, you receive a beautiful certificate from Toastmasters International to display in your home office or at work. You can also request to have a congratulatory letter sent to your Manager. Now that’s special! Imagine if you achieve two or three education awards this year. It means you get three certificates and three opportunities for letters to be sent to your Manager. In Toastmasters, members are special because ‘Members Make It Happen!”. Without you, there would be no Clubs.

Are you on board to invite at least one new member to join your Club this year? This is a good time to give others the opportunity to enhance their communication and leadership skills. What makes Toastmasters so special is the number of lifelong friends you meet when you become a member. We have so many resources in our District and in Toastmasters worldwide. This is certainly worth sharing with our community. Are you on board?

This year, each member is challenged to give ten (10) speeches. Ten speeches mean you will achieve at least one (1) education award. Are you on board to expand your communication and leadership skills? Are you on board to help your Club achieve success this year? The District leadership team is on board and we believe you are, too.

Bahamas Experience… LGM Hieu Huynh’s Official VisitBy: Anthony (Tony) Longley DTM, District 47 PRO

It was literally a “Warm Welcome” awaiting Distinguished Toastmaster Hieu Huynh when he touched down at 12:30 PM at the Lynden Pindling International Airport on New Providence Island, The Bahamas. The sky was a spectacular royal blue, with scattered clouds that resembled clusters of jumbo cotton balls. The temperature on that Tuesday, October 4 was a warm 85 degrees. Luckily, the balmy breeze was enough to make the coconut trees rustle as their branches fanned the humid air. DTM Hieu Huynh, who is the Lt. Governor Marketing-East, was in town representing the District’s Executive Committee on an official visit to Division I.

No sooner had he cleared Immigration and Customs did the adventure begin. It was like a chapter from a Hardy Boys novel. What should have been a very short walk to the ground transportation pick-up area suddenly turned into a mysterious case of “The Missing Passenger”. Hieu took a wrong turn, ending up a few hundred feet away in the Domestic Departure Lounge. Meanwhile, the designated chauffeur for the day, this writer, was quickly progressing to a state of panic as I circled the airport for over one hour. I decided to telephone the District Governor with an update just to relieve her anxiety and assure her that everything was “under control”. Almost 90 minutes after touchdown, and just as I was about to file an official “Missing Man” report, I suddenly spotted a familiar human figure peering through the window of the east terminal. Yes, it was Hieu Huynh, looking healthy and well nourished! He had found an oasis - a Wendy’s Restaurant. After chumming down an order of “#5 special”, I guess he was ready to be discovered. I made the call: “Madam DG, the case of ‘The Missing Passenger’ is solved… we can lift the missing man alert.” Beginning that very Tuesday evening and for the next three days, Hieu went on a busy road trip, executing each assignment with masterful precision and diplomacy. His speeches had one common thread - admonishing the officers to take care of their members and the club will grow and succeed. However, on each stop the building blocks of every speech he delivered had a different twist leaving his audiences motivated and inspired to achieve even greater levels of success.

First, it was a visit to Healing Communicators Club 7178 at 6:00 PM. From there he was whisked off to the combined Charter & Club Installation Ceremonies for Achievers of Excellence and Holistic Trendsetters Toastmasters Clubs which began at 7:00 PM.

There is an adage that says, “All work and no play will make Jack a dull boy”. To ensure that this did not happen in the case of LGM Hieu Huynh, Division I Governor, DTM Rachel Ferguson made sure that Hieu’s trip would be spiced with periods of leisure and adventure, especially being his first visit to The Bahamas. So, on Wednesday, Hieu was hosted to lunch and a tour of The Atlantis Marine Observatory courtesy of Roderick Colebrook, DTM - Director of Casino Marketing for Kerzner International, Paradise Island. Hieu was accompanied by TM Jason Springer, Division I PRO and TM Judy Simmons, Area 87 Governor. From The Atlantis, it was back to his hotel on Cable Beach for a brief period of “R & R” before setting off

that evening for the Division I Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contests. There, Hieu gave official remarks on behalf of the District 47 Executive Committee. He also presented the Outstanding Toastmasters Pin to Vanessa Scott, DTM, and participated in the presentation of contest awards.

On Thursday October 6, Hieu’s itinerary began with a tour of historic Downtown Nassau and Fort Charlotte where he took lots of photos for his memoir and learned about the dark history of the Piracy Era in The Bahamas. Time passed swiftly and soon, duty was calling again. “There is so much to do and see but too little time. I guess I’ll have to return soon,” said Hieu.

There was a brief “pit stop” allowing time to Hieu to make a few adjustments before scurrying off to Luminaries Club 1510789, one of the newest Clubs in Division I scheduled for 6:00 PM. Following the meeting the courtesy team took Hieu to dinner at “The Fish Fry” at Arawak Cay, Nassau’s version of City Place in West Palm Beach. Here, LGM Hieu netted a huge steamed yellowtail snapper, (head still on) with peas and rice and fried plantains. He also sampled conch salad, a Bahamian delicacy. This was chased by a special Bahamian coconut beverage (with secret ingredients). Hieu was now ready for his final assignment, a visit to The Bahamas’ oldest Toastmasters Club, The First Bahamas Branch of Toastmasters Club 1600, chartered 42 years ago in January, 1969. The meeting starts at 8:00 PM but there is no scheduled time for adjournment. At Club 1600, Hieu gave a motivational speech that was well received. He commended the club on being a District leader in educational awards. He participated in the induction of a new member who had the rare honor of being pinned by a District LGM. Club 1600 President, TM Charles Newbold III pinned LGM Hieu Huynh as an Honorary Member of the Club.

To close the curtain on his exhilarating Bahamas expedition, following the Club 1600 meeting, The Officers and members hosted Hieu to a late night social outing at “Curly’s”, a popular sports lounge owned by Past Division I Governor, Vince “Curly” McDonald, DTM. He was accompanied by Jason Springer, Division I PRO and fellow District Executives, Pamela D. Rolle, and me, the District 47 PRO, also a member of Club 1600. As we entered the packed halls of Curly’s just before midnight, I saw Hieu’s eyes open wide and his pupils seemed to dilate, so I asked, “Hieu are you okay?” He replied, “Wow, I can’t believe there are so many prospective Toastmasters in this place!” A few hours later, Lt. Governor Marketing-East, Hieu Huynh said farewell to The Bahamas and returned to

South Florida on Friday morning. On behalf of Division I Governor Rachel Ferguson DTM, Division Council and members, thank you LGM Hieu Huynh for visiting and please return soon!

Tampa Bay PMI & Toastmasters PartnershipBy: Matt Siewert, Area 35 Governor

As you may already know from the September edition of The Sunshiner, the Project Management Institute of Tampa Bay (PMI-TB) and Toastmasters District 47 in Tampa Bay have formally announced the “official roll-out” of the new partnership program. It allows Toastmasters

chapters in the Tampa Bay area to offer continuing education credits called, Professional Development Units (PDU) to project management practitioners who are accredited with a Project Management Professional certification (PMP).

The Roll-Out of this exciting new program was formally announced on Saturday, September 24 at the PMI-Tampa Bay’s 7th annual Symposium which in scale is equivalent to a Toastmasters District 47 Fall or Spring Conference. A total of 400 project management practitioners in attendance heard the announcement from me, Matt Siewert - Area 35 Governor. The event kicked off on Saturday morning with a keynote address by Kathy Potts, President of National Speakers Association (NSA) - Tampa Bay chapter, and a member of “Top of the Morning” Toastmasters Club in Oldsmar, FL (Division H). WOW what an experience! I must tell you that speaking to a ‘sea of people’ in a large venue like the PMI Symposium with 400 pairs of eyes peering on you is QUITE a different experience than that of a CC manual speech in front of a handful of friendly Toastmasters at my home club. The good news is… I did not faint; I didn’t even break a sweat - to my surprise. I know I could never have done so well at my Symposium address without the practice under my belt, gained through the speeches presented at my home club over the last couple of years.

We had a display table for the Symposium’s crowd on Friday afternoon and all day on Saturday, which was donated to us by PMI-Tampa Bay (TB). I cannot thank PMI-TB enough for their graciousness, help and support in the PDU program alone. They also accommodated Toastmasters at this event free of charge… hats off to them! Our Division C Governor, Bett Correa, paid a visit on Friday afternoon. She helped out at our table as we worked to inform the large numbers gathered at our table about how Toastmasters can add to their project management skills and earn them the PDU needed to keep the Project Management Professional certifications active.

The keynote speakers who were hired and compensated by PMI-TB to present at the Symposium all came by our Toastmasters table and gave huge accolades to the new PDU program and brilliance of this partnership between PMI-TB and Toastmasters. All of the keynote speakers have been or are currently active with Toastmasters in their home town!

My job of spreading the information about the Toastmasters PDU program and Toastmasters in general was helped tremendously by these Keynote speakers as they referred to Toastmasters organization during their speeches… THEY DID THE WORK FOR US on their own accord. The response was such a blow up, we could barely cope with the mob at our table. Some of the club members from my home club (also attending as PMI members) came to the rescue and helped with informing the attendees about Toastmasters and the PDU program roll out.

A big, THANK YOU to Adam Hsu and Claudia Bryant; they were most helpful to us. One of the presenters actually borrowed an Advanced Communicator (AC) manual from my Toastmasters table which I had lying around to show as example of the Toastmasters program and he used it for his speech. You couldn’t get a better plug than that for Toastmasters! The Regional Advisor from PMI Global for Region 14 (South USA and Caribbean) expressed high regard and enthusiasm for the Toastmasters partnership program with Tampa Bay effort and will be in contact with me to talk about possibilities with the PMI Global organization’s Region 14.

My experience of the PMI Symposium was unforgettable with Toastmasters buzz all around. Pictures I was

able to capture when not being mobbed by the crowd are posted on a picasa web album located at the following link:https://picasaweb.google.com/115339308159186342875/20110924PMISymposiumToastmastersBooth# A CALL TO ACTION for all Area Governors in the Tampa Bay area (7 counties that surround Tampa)!!!

Please make this PDU program known to all Toastmasters Clubs who want to join the network of clubs eligible to award PDU’s to project management practitioners. Toastmasters clubs will need to register with PMI-TB and get a Code assigned for the club before the education credit can be claimed by those earning the PDU. Please get your clubs interested in this new offering, as it will attract members to your chapter in search of a venue offering PDU’s for the PMP certified individuals - there are about 1300 PMP’s in Tampa Bay area.

A kick-off meeting to train Toastmasters clubs in administering the PDU program is scheduled for OCTOBER 25 (Location TBA). This is mandatory if the club wants to be eligible to offer the PDU education credits. Please contact Matt Siewert, Area 35 Governor for updates on the program at [email protected] or check for updates at the following link:http://www.pmi-tampabay.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=152:toastmasters-program-update&catid=116:news-room&Itemid=148

A ‘Hot Dog’ Named DiegaBy: Ed Korkowski, Area 41 Governor

At the Toastmasters Area 41 Speech contests on Sept. 10th, the test speaker, who was a visually impaired woman, spoke about using guide dogs. Her guide dog naturally, is trained to keep her out of harm's way. I noticed during one of the other speeches that the guide dog named Diega, kept yawning. It seemed obvious to me that Diega wanted to take a nap. But how could Diega take a nap if she was to keep protective watch over her master? In a display of sheer intelligence as if she read my mind, Diega rested her paw up on her master's foot, so if her master moved or rose to her feet, Diega would be "at the ready" to protect and serve her best friend in an instant.I’m so glad I had my camera. I pointed it to capture the unique photo and thought to myself… Wow, that's one ‘Hot Dog’… Click!!

The Winning essay: How Toastmasters Has Impacted My LifeBy: Jane V. Blanchard

In 2003, after getting “downsized” from a company in Massachusetts, I moved to Sarasota, Florida. For purely selfish reasons, I joined Toastmasters. I wanted to network and to learn to interview better. Little did I know how joining Positively Speaking Toastmasters would alter my

life, helping me grow beyond the speeches.Over the years I learned so much more than the mechanics of public speaking. I learned to listen and to give and receive positive feedback. I learned to think on my feet and to find my voice and perfect my expression. I learned leadership skills, how to effectively conduct a meeting, and to encourage participants to achieve their best. And most importantly, I made friends who watched me grow, encouraged me forward, and were always happy to see me. Positively Speaking Toastmasters made public speaking fun.Because of my newly gained confidence, I became vocal in women’s activist groups and subsequently became a leader at the local and state levels. I wrote letters to the editor and was published more than 35 times. I spoke at peace rallies, led marches, addressed the local city council. Starting in March 2008 and for two years, I hosted a weekly radio program, Women Matters. I am now campaigning to develop awareness about human trafficking in Sarasota County. None of these accomplishments would have happened without my joining Toastmasters. In 2010, overwhelmed with work and activities, I left Toastmasters, relieved at not having to prepare speeches and overjoyed to gain an evening each week. The sky didn’t fall, but this rising-star started to fade.It happened so slowly that I didn’t even notice. My once-a-month letter to the editor started to become once every six weeks, and then further and further apart. I retired from the radio program, and stopped writing monthly newsletters and on-line journal entries. I declined leadership roles in various organizations, becoming more of a bystander.I tried to rationalize why this was happening: I was tired; I was emotionally wiped-out; it was someone else’s turn to take on the responsibilities that I no longer wanted to deal with. As author David Harold Fink said, "You don't have to do anything you don't want to do." At that point in my life, I did not want to do anything. So I stopped. One day I realized that when I left Toastmasters, I left behind my voice. David Harold Fink also said, “When we become a part of anything, it becomes a part of us.” I was not just a part of Toastmasters, it was a part of me, the creative part. To regain my voice, to exercise my leadership skills, and to reconnect to my creativity, I HAD to rejoin Toastmasters.

On Friday, August 12, 2011 with a smile on my face, I greeted my friends, “Good evening, my fellow Toastmasters.”

Division I Celebrates Toastmasters Month In Grand Style

By: Anthony Longley – D 47 PRO

Division I, which comprises 49 Toastmasters Clubs in The Islands of The Bahamas, celebrates the month of October annually as ‘Toastmasters Month’. This was sealed by an official proclamation by The Right Hon. Hubert A. Ingraham, Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and was published in the local press on Monday October 3, 2011. When Toastmasters was founded by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley in 1924, the first meeting was held on October 22 at the Y.M.C.A. Auditorium in Santa Ana, California; hence the reason for celebrating Toastmasters Month during the month of October.

A host of exciting activities has been planned to promote public awareness of Toastmasters in the Islands during the month. On Sunday October 2, Division I Governor Rachel Ferguson and her Division Council led a group of approximately 100 Toastmasters to Mt. Tabor Full Gospel Baptist Church for the annual Division Church Service. This was followed by a fellowship luncheon at Sea Grapes Buffet at The Atlantis, Paradise Island.

On Tuesday October 4, 2011, Division I Council members paid a courtesy call on The Governor General of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes at the Governor’s official residence.

On Wednesday October 5, Division I held its annual Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contests under The Distinguished Patronage of Division I Governor, Rachel Ferguson. The Guest of Honor was District 47 Lt. Governor Marketing-East, Hieu Huynh DTM, who was on an official visit to Division I (Bahamas). Other District Executive Officers in attendance were District 47 Governor Pamela D. Rolle, DTM and District 47 PRO, Anthony Longley, DTM. Also showing support in person was Past District 47 Governor Godfrey Springer, DTM.

Saturday October 15 was a big day for Division I as all clubs came out under their respective Areas for one big exposition and membership drive. The event was held in Rawson Square, opposite

the Houses of Parliament in downtown Nassau from noon to 8:00 PM. There was live entertainment throughout the afternoon. Also, as part of the DTM Keith L. Major Annual 100 Speech Classics, there was also an outdoor speech marathon allowing members to earn additional credits toward their education awards. The ‘KLM’ 100 Speech Classics is a program designed to encourage Division I Toastmasters to give a minimum of 100 speeches outside of the Toastmasters Club setting during the month of October.

Other events planned for the month of October include:• Saturday, October 29, 2011: Toastmasters Grill & Chill Family Fun-day at Goodman’s Bay Beach• Monday, October 31, 2011: Toastmasters Road Show to various schools to promote the youth programs such

as Youth Leadership and Gavel Club.

Throughout the month, members of the Division Council will have opportunities to appear on radio and television shows to promote the benefits of Toastmasters. Congratulations Division I!

POSITIONING  STATEMENT

I  wasn’t  born  a  leader.    They  were  all  around  me  though.  In  the  community,  at  work,  at  school.  Leaders  were  everywhere.  They  were  the  heads  of  families,  coaches  of  teams,  business  leaders,  mentors,  organizaFonal  decision-‐makers.

I  admired  these  leaders.  They  influenced  who  I  was  and  who  I  was  becoming  because  I  aspired  to  walk  in  their  footsteps.

And,  so,  I  commiJed  myself  to  becoming  one.

Finally,  it  came  to  me.  It  wasn’t  just  what  leaders  knew  that  enabled  them  to  lead.    They  had  a  voice.  They  could  tell  their  story.  They  could  listen  and  answer.  They  didn’t  just  accomplish,  they  communicated.

So  I  set  out  to  find  my  voice.  Learn  to  process  ideas  in  the  midst  of  discussion.  Train  myself  to  listen  aJenFvely.  Learn  to  give  feedback  –  and  accept  it.  I  needed  to  organize,  plan,  deliver  and  follow  up.  I  needed  a  place  where  all  the  ingredients  were  available,  and  someone  would  guide  me  along  the  way.

I  found  that  place.  I  found  a  community  of  learners  and  the  path  to  leadership.

I  am  a  leader  –  and  I  was  made.

When the newly re-branded Toastmasters products were rolled out on opening day of the recent Toastmasters International Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, one of the first products to sell out was the new Toastmasters officer and member pins. Luckily for District 47 Governor; Pamela D. Rolle DTM, District Governors were afforded the privilege of advanced viewing and purchase on the day prior to the product store opening to the general convention attendees. Pamela wasted no time in qualifying for the title of “Preferred Shopper” as she zealously filled her shopping cart with many of the exciting new products. Despite the exuberance however, the District Governor did not forget that she would have to return home to Nassau so she made sure to secure a gift for TM Carleta Toote, the President of her home club, Healing Communicators Toastmasters Club 7178. Pamela is a President’s Distinguished Past President of Club 7178 (2005-06).
