Editor’s Note

2May - June 2015 Issue Vol 10 - 11

Dear Readers,

The Newsletter Editorial Team brings before you the last edition of TI year 2014-15.

It's always towards the end of the journey that you think back and contemplate on how the paths you embarked on treated you, who all became your co travelers, what you gained and lost and what transformation the journey brought to your life.

At this moment, I take this opportunity to thank everyone from the district who took out time to design, contribute, review, suggest and read the editions which we published this year.

Poonam: One of the most creative persons I have seen. Full of life and energy, she was the reason behind the Newsletter designs which have been very well appreciated by everyone. It was a pleasure working with you and I look forward to such opportunities in future too.

Sagar: aka sugar boy :D Cool and composed, you ask him for one thing, he will give you two. A budding writer and innovator, Sagar will surely make a big mark wherever he goes.

Ravi: Ravi is the most chilled out member of our team. Approachable and witty, whether you

have a problem or not Ravi will have the solution :D . I am sure he will make us proud with his new stint as the Division Director too :D

Arijita: The cute lady from the sweetest city in the country, she has been instrumental in collecting and collating articles. Thank you for always being there to extend a helping hand.

I would also like to thank all the District Leaders who reviewed and gave a sign off to every edition without any delay.

A special mention to Ron, our D41 webmaster, whom we have troubled with uploading the editions, removing and re-uploading. Thank you Ron for being so patient with us.

Finally, we bring to you this assortment of articles covering Oration 2015, personal experiences of Toastmasters and much more. Hope you will like it.Happy reading!!!!

Where Leaders are Made

Fellow Toastmasters,

As we end the year, I would like to thank each and every one of you, my Toastmasters family, for your contribution to our District. I do hope you have had an enriching and enjoyable year.

At this stage, I'd like to ask you for a little help. We are short in terms of membership payments and clubs. The task seems daunting, but while we may be stirred, our spirit is nor shaken. We can bounce back. The good news is each and every one of you can be a Bond, and make a difference.

While we are working on clubs, may I request each and every one of you to add one member in the next 7 days, to your clubs. If each one of us can add one member each.. we can achieve President's Distinguished District and then proudly say 'We Did it Together'.

Will you take on the challenge of adding one member? Will you put your District on the world's map of achievers? Will you make that difference?

Oration 2015, was for me, a much awaited event for two reasons. One, I was looking forward to three days of non-stop fun, thanks to all the anticipation created by Team Oration and two, I was coming as a contestant. What appealed to me best @Oration 2015 was the seamlessness of events. Each day began and ended even before we knew it! Everyone who took the stage gave great value to the audience, which I think should be the sole objective for any speaker. As a member of the audience I learnt, I gaped, I sang, I laughed, I held my breath (during the finale dance performance) and enjoyed every teeny weeny bit of the conference.

As a contestant, needless to say, I was anxious. The Contest Chairs, DTM Chandrashekar DP and TM Chinmay Dave did a good job at getting

everything in place way before the contest and keeping me (us) calm. I spent my time well focusing on the speeches, which obviously went well for me! A big Thank you to Team Oration for putting together a wonderful event! I am sure many have bonded for life over the past three to five months in the process of organizing Oration 2015. I wish everyone a fruitful journey in Toastmasters and hope to chat some of you up soon at Confluence 2015 @ Hyderabad.

'In the end, Toastmasters was the winner'Oration 2015. Another district conference, another opportunity for self-discovery. This was my 17th district conference. What I've learnt from these 17experiences is simple - never compare one conference with the other. There is an intangible uniqueness to each one. People who see this and leverage it are those who gain most out the experience.

Here's what I found unique about Oration 2015:

1. Everybody gets to attend every education session: In most conferences, education sessions happen in parallel in breakout rooms.

Audience need to pick the best one and lose out on other sessions. Oration ensured all members attended all sessions.

2. Ravi Sastri The audience response:famously says 'In the end, cricket was the winner'. Similarly, in the international speech contest, I think 'Toastmasters was the winner'. This is because of the incredible audience support for each and every speaker, whether or not he/she was from own or different division.

3. There Moving mountains silently:were many last minute hurdles at Oration.

'In the end,Toastmasterswas the winner'

Some expected, most unexpected. The team ensured that none of that affected the contestants and other performers. They absorbed it, took most things in their stride and emerged as winners.

Personally, emerging victorious second time was as humbling as it was exhilarating. The love and support showered by District 41 has been incredible. But District 41 is an inanimate entity without you! So thank YOU for your wishes, I shall give my best shot at the next level.

Contesting has given me a new perspective about public speaking, and most importantly, about myself. To ensure that the motivation lasts and gets passed on, I post my learnings at www.facebook.com/adityaspeaks . It's a place I keep in touch with a lot of you to discuss, debate, and deliberate on the finer nuances of

public speaking and leadership.

Look forward to meeting you soon at yet another district conference.

My Message for theD41 Newsletter :

I thank the Council Members for electing me as the Club Growth Director of the proposed District 98.

It has been a wonderful journey for me at Toastmasters as I discovered latent talents within and without. Meeting and mentoring members has helped me to gain insight and grow as a person.

James Penney says " Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together."

Whilst we endeavour to add new clubs to District 98, let us also focus on retention and improving the quality of the existing clubs.

I look forward to your continued support.

One of my most memorable quotes by a celebrity is from an interview by Amitabh Bachhan. About a decade ago, when he had practically resurrected his career in his second innings, he was asked, "What motivates you to keep working when other heroes of your age have taken to retirement?" He said, "I wake up every morning with the possibility of discovering myself anew". For me, that one sentence captured the very essence of who he is, why he does what he does.

If I look around at the people around me - friends, family, colleagues, Toastmasters - the ones who seem to be happiest are the ones who seem to be open to discovering themselves. I have not led a very adventurous life to discover myself - I have been doing it in Toastmasters. Each speech, each role, each responsibility is an opportunity to uncover another aspect of ourselves, which we ourselves may not knew to exist. Now, with the formation of new District 98, those like me who are a part of it, have yet another opportunity to discover new frontiers.

Next year, in the month of June, another Toastmasters term would have ended and we would have left this frontier behind us. For now, lets cherish this moment, and gear up for another year of discovery ahead of us. Wish you a great year ahead!

When I held the Gavel on stage as I was sworn to be the Division Director of the newly formed District, my 5+ year's association with TI flashed in front of my eyes. I compared the Mohit Chhabra of 2009 to the one standing in front of the whole district and yes I knew there was a mammoth difference between the two most of which is attributed to Toastmasters. I then decided to make a positive difference to a lot of lives, make them quality speakers, leaders, communicators and yes quality learners. My role I decided would not be that of a coach or a preacher but that of a mentor and facilitator. In my tenure I would emphasize on the Quality Programs enabling people not just to reach milestones and achieve goals but be a better version of themselves.

My journey in toastmasters started with questions and unending discussions on what benefits will a session as early as 9:30

My Message for theD41 Newsletter :

Today I can answer all questions on why one should join Toastmasters, have numerous discussions on Toastmasters and can travel to any distance at any point of time to be a part of this phenomenon called toastmasters.

I am looking forward to the support and guidance from all of you. Let's make this brand new TI year bigger and better.

When i joined Toastmasters, i was always fascinated when each speaker come up on the stage and talk about his/her personal experiences and links it to a message. I felt that somehow i have became part of their lives hearing it and knowing it, the same thing happened when i spoke, the audience became part my life. Toastmasters is a world that we created, a supportive framework were one can fail, succeed, experiment or have fun, and still get the same round of applause no matter what. This happen because we want to create some positive defining moments for each other, we like to live in each other moments and more importantly celebrate them.

As a District Officer, i believe that we should make sure that this happens. We are all never the reason nor the result, but are the part of

many catalysts that accelerate this process. District 98 is just formed and we are all just lucky to serve the new District's family,as a family we should together make decisions, together we progress and together we celebrate. Let us keep the fascination of the new member always alive, let him applaud and cherish those moments. Let us allow him to see Toastmasters in the same way he saw it when he joined.

“You're in the spot light; don't worry; only a couple of hundred people will be looking at you. Watching your every move”… A scarier notion is yet to be discovered! These were the first lines I heard from a friend when I told her I was to be the emcee at a school event.

Who on earth would want to be an Emcee then? Gee... I don't know... Maybe a Toastmaster surely.... One who wants to take on a role, do something different or may have plain dumb luck that makes them the 'bakra' at one event or another. Be it inevitable or be it by choice, the moment you are an EMCEE, there's a few pointers that could help you prepare for being that gracious host.

Own your event: Get the details of the day's event. This should give you a good understanding of the timeline, the sequence

and which parts you'll have to come in at. Just as any good Toastmaster, work out your introductions well before hand, even if it's a know person. Scratch that... especially if it's a known person! Keep it professional. Feel free to ask the organizers for details and any other points you need.

It's not about you it's about the event: The end role of the Emcee is to MOVE THINGS ALONG. It's not about you; it's all about time that you have to manage. Once you know your stage, the sequence of events and what's going to happen when the bulk of your work is done. As the Emcee prepare for each segment with introductions and closing comments. Word to the wise... Avoid patronizing comments and clichés. Be fresh be original. Remember these events are to have a host moving things along so that the event is successful.

Most importantly have fun! Find your style and then keep your tone, demeanour and style in tune with the event. If it's formal be normal, If it's easy avoid being cheesy. In either case, keep things light and humorous. The more fun you look like you're having on stage the more the audience will enjoy you hosting them. A good repertoire of jokes, anecdotes or stories and mini engagement activities will keep your audience entertained as you host the evening. These aces also come in handy when you need fillers for “technical difficulties”.

With these 3 aces up your sleeve, you'll find it easier to go through the event. You can also practice all of these points when called upon to be a General Evaluator, The TMOD or even a Contest Chair. Practice at the club every chance you get. It's fun! Good Luck & Cheers!

Once upon a time in a far away village on the banks of Ganges, there lives a boy named Saoa. Saoa doesn't only have a unique name but also posses a unique habit, habit of collecting pebbles. Whenever something special or different happens with him, he tries to search the pebble of the moment from the ground and place it in a small box, placed over his study table.

Pebbles weren't ordinary; they were very special to him.Time came when Saoa has to move to a big city. A city filled with lots of surprises for him. He continued his habit. His small box wasn't enough to accommodate so many pebbles. So he brought a big

box and kept small old box in a trunk. He though, with a big box he should collect more and more pebbles per event. After some time this box was full with pebbles. He brought anther big box and kept this one in the trunk. As days progressed, his interest in collecting pebbles for the moment was more than the moment itself.

One day, while searching for something, he opened the trunk and observed it was nearly filled with boxes containing pebbles. It took out small box, the oldest one. He could relate with every single pebble in that box. He was able to relive those moments related every pebbles. They

were truly special to him. While with other pebbles it doesn't felt such a connection. As collecting pebble came as by product, enjoying the moment being the main purpose.

Aren't we similar to SAOA, Socially Active On Applications. We have filled folder with digital memories. But we hardly get time to cherish those memories. Posting so many pictures of an event which we didn't check if there is no like or comment over it. We are concerned more about posting special moments than living them. We spend more time over applications that it our pass time when we are feeling low. Usually it hardly helps to bring

Saoa taught me that whenever I feel low, I open those folders filled with memories and relive those moments. Recently we had D41 Annual Conference, Oration2015. I have a Oration2015 T-Shirt, which is very special to me. This is no ordinary T-shirt, it was signed by more than 100+ Toastmasters. Where Leaders are Made

Oration 2015 was the first District Conference that I had attended. Just 8 months old in Toastmasters, I was excitedly waiting for the happenings at Aamchi Mumbai on May 15. The city of dreams, entwined with the passion of Toastmasters, ensured that excitement was at its peak.

The Y.B. Centre (Mumbai) was buzzing with energy that could not be subdued. Oration 2015 was a gateway to meet new friends and strengthen the bonds that were already present. The keynote speakers were like the stars in the galaxy, each with their own shine and sizzle. Ranging from the Army man, Capt. Raghuram to the ISCKON Vice President, Gaurang Prabhu, You want it and you got it.

But the most important part of conference was the speakers who made a mark for themselves at the Division level and were ready to fight up for the coveted title of "District Champion". An array of amazing speeches by the International Speech Contestants and the wonderful presence of mind of the Table Topics Contestants enthralled one and all. It was a delight for all the Toastmasters and guests alike.

Personally, it was an enriching experience as I

The true enigma came to the fore. At one moment, everybody was seriously engrossed in the proceedings of the day. The next, everyone had let their hair down and making the best 'Enigma' had on offer.

There was an aura of exuberance as each Toastmaster entered the scene of great expectations. The music grooved in the background while the foreground was filled with the Toastmaster Spirit. The true self came to the fore. Every Toastmaster had left behind everything only to enjoy precious moments of fun.For me as a Toastmaster, I suddenly saw the 'other side' of many from Goa, for starts. The 'other side' that I love seeing the most. The one where everything is left behind and the virtue of 'live life to the fullest' is given its true meaning. The DJ would not stop the crackling and scratching. The Toastmasters could not stop their jumping and dancing. I could not stop gaping and admiring all that was going on!

Oration 2015 had all that was needed to make the event one that could not be missed. For those who missed it, you missed something you can never get again. But for us who were there, it

never get again. But for us who were there, it could not have been better. It was one that brought out all the 'enigma' in split second differences.

The laborious walk to the dinner table was one of the longest. I did not feel I needed it with so much happening. But then, what needs to be done, needs to be done. Waving a tearful farewell to the noisy hall, I had to make my way to the dinner and the next moment, true to the enigma spirit enveloping the atmosphere, I was laughing again. Laughing away before with a policy of 'I eat to live', the dinner had just met my goals to the 'T'. The entertainment just continued, this time through the stomach.

This was the first occasion for my son TM Ivo Coelho, to experience the Toastmaster 'journey' at a conference. I was pleased to have him along because this was the place he actually experienced true fellowship. A young man or woman can truly gain an enriching experience from the 'enigmatic spirit' every Toastmaster carries in all he or she does.

A word of praise to all those who put together Oration 2015 at Mumbai and certainly, had a great time at each minute I spent at the conference. Already looking forward to Hyderabad. This journey indeed begins with a speech, but continues with the grand 'enigma spirit'!

J.R.R Tolkien once said 'All those who wander aren't lost', life isn't just about the destination but the journey that makes all the difference. I am a part Toastmasters since 2014, and this sojourn has taken me from Dist. 41 to Dist. 82 and then back to Hyderabad.

Homecoming is always special, but this time the potpourri of Toastmasters had to offer a different flavour, 'Orafest' was round the corner and mighty Mumbai was calling me with open arms.

Mumbai isn't called the 'Melting Pot' of India just like that, the event drew like me comrades from all the regions in India, with faces and names both known and unknown, we all got along with each other like the waves of the sea, brought together by smiles and the lectern we share.

It was a chance in the first go, to connect with people outside the contingent of Hyderabad, talk and understand and re-invent some of the best practices in every aspect we can, the subject of conversation

to professional guidance, from shaking a leg at the fun night to exchanging couplets of poetry. It was all there, the hope, the mirth, the warmth, because it was the time, 'heart-warming' moments for us.

Exploring Mumbai is always a puzzle, and if you are accompanied by people who you meet for the first time is definitely an experience in itself, from Colaba to Crawford, how the time went by crossing the streets, we didn't knew; but surely it was a time so well spent that it is now a high water mark of our lives.

The repertoire of the guest speakers was probably one of the best I ever witnessed. Someone once said to me that the words 'Vivid' and 'Mumbai' are synonyms in the choice of the speakers and the subject matter deserve due credit. Though initially the momentum was slow, but once the inertia was put in; there was no turning back. Mumbai lived up to the expectations rather crossed it in many aspects.

The experience would be

incomplete if I don't talk about the contests which were the pulse points of the 3 day event. The International Speech Contest demonstrated that why it uses the word International. The bar of competition that once was raised kept rising along with the mercury of Mumbai that day, as if the nature was also making sure that it gave the contestants as well as the audience equally tough time.

Not just the ISC, the table topic contest was also akin to keep the audience and contestants on their toes. We give ice breaker speeches, but the real ice breaker for the delegates was the fun night where we tried to match the tunes of each other, grooving on the track and myself waltzing for the first time.

Though it was for the first time, the music chimes in the ears; the laughs and the guffaws still prevail. Though the date might have been passed, the sun might have been set; but the radiant faces will be embellished in my memory forever. Nothing is perfect and Oration is no exception.

Paucity of time didn't permit me to meet friends I wanted to in person, but still I will walk down the sand dunes of time with a smile on my face saying, 'BEEN THERE, DONE THAT'.

Where Leaders are Made

Calvin: You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood.Hobbes: What mood is that?

Calvin: LAST MINUTE PPAANNIICC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This is precisely the case (at times) during the last few days before publishing the quarterly newsletter. At times, this panic situation is un-avoidable. Like, in case of a hard disk crash (now most of the things are safe on Gmail or Google Drive) or a sudden busy period for the club members (like project turning critical). The question is can the panic situation be avoided?

For a newsletter to be published, the editorial team has about three months (considering it's a quarterly edition). The newsletter should literally be containing the club's news updates for the quarter. Here lies the catch. The editor can appoint a reporter(TM or guest) to cover an event (club contests, visit to another club, etc). Assigning a reporter role to a new member or a guest gives a whole new perspective of the events; encourages them to take up future roles (new members) or become a TM (guest); and gives them a sense of joy to be published. The reporter has to be assigned before the event's commencement and they will be responsible for preparing an article for the event covered within a particular timeframe. The editor would also need to decide a theme well in advance so that the reporters can align their articles based on the theme. These articles by the reporters should make up the bulk of the newsletters content. The editor has to keep into account the busy periods, when getting the members' time and attention becomes a bit difficult like festive seasons and year ending(both calendar and financial). The panic situation is not an immortal demon.

The Newsletter

The newsletter once prepared should be well circulated. One of the main reasons for having a newsletter is to advertise the club and it can be instrumental in getting new members. No stones should be left unturned in circulating the newsletters on social media (FB, Knome); and through mails to not only the club members but also to the guest list. There should not be any boundary in circulation.

The editor may also drop commendation emails to the contributors and their immediate supervisors (maybe some of the supervisors drop in for a meeting and become members). The newsletter needs a lot of energy, passion and dedication of the PR Team. If it does not get a good amount of readers, the efforts go in waste. So, Publish and Propagate (PnP) to the best for the success of the newsletter. The more noise we make the better for the club.

The newsletter also serves as an archive for the club's history. So, the newsletters over the years need to be well preserved. Maybe, one day we can have a special edition containing all the newsletters through the years published on the tenth birthday of the club and call it 'Decathlon'. Forgive me for being too futuristic on this one.

A word to the existing and future members - Let us not take for granted the professional membership support provided by the organization. As a member of TMBTC, we should always have in mind, how we are benefiting ourselves, the organization, and the society on a whole. Only then, can we justify being under the ambit of TCS Maitree. The newsletter is one of the best medium to showcase that.

Stay positive, smile and share. These three traits will take you places. Have fun as you learn and grow.

Chandra Shekhar D.P, Program Quality Director, District 98

Now this is the law of ToastmastersAs old and as true as the sky

And the member that follows will prosper But the member that violates shall disappear

As the creeper that embraces the tree trunkThe law runs back and front

For the strength of the District is the MemberAnd the strength of the Member is the District.

Leo Paulose, Division D Director, District 98

'If there is one place where you can come and genuinely improve yourself without fear of failure, then it is Toastmasters for sure. As we look forward to a new year for Toastmasters, I would request each and every one of you, whether you are taking an official role or not, to give your best to the organization. We have an even bigger responsibility now, of taking our young and new District to the next level and to make it the best District in the world.’

Nitesh Agarwal, Division C Director

I love this quote "He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who doesn't ask, is a fool for lifetime". To ask a question we need confidence and to ask a right question we need practice. Both of which Toastmasters can help us achieve.
