Lowry: After Going Second pre-
formed at Lowry, they needed help
packing up to move on to Reno. After
helping them, a couple Lowry Key
Club members got a quick shot with
the band.
A word from Alli
Page 3
Before I began to work on this month’s newslet-
ter, I was trying to think of a topic to write about in
this blurb so it is not the last thing I complete, like it
usually is. I was walking out of my room to grab
some paper to print out agenda’s and I saw a pic-
ture that was taken this past summer (picture is be-
low).
Over the summer a friend from Alaska came to
visit. One day we decided to go to Rye Patch to go
boating. My friend and I went to go sit in the tube
for a while to tan. We didn’t exactly think to tie the
string to the boat so we didn’t float away; when a
little breeze came up, we didn’t think anything of it
until we realized that the breeze was taking us into
the lake. Yes, I know we are not the brightest.
I started to think about how we let go of the boat,
and how it is about time for me to let go of being
President and Tech editor. This past Thursday, we
had our club elections. The President Elect can easi-
ly take Lowry to so many different levels that I am
not capable of. The stubborn part of me, doesn’t
want to let go; many questions and different sce-
narios pop into my head. And way too many ‘what
ifs’.
Seeing this picture and remembering that day,
when I let go of the boat and started thinking of
what could easily happen IF we were go into the
middle of the lake. I turned my head to my best
friend and realized that if something bad were to
happen, I’d have her right by me and we’d turn a
nightmare into a class A adventure.
As it is ALMOST time for me to let go, it is also
time for many other Presidents, officers, and mem-
bers to let go and have an adventure of a life time.
Good luck to everybody who is needing to let go
soon.

My favorite Dr. Sues character would have to be the
Grinch. At the beginning he is evil, mean and wants to
seal Christmas. In the end, he learned from his mistakes

SALUTATIONS DIVISION 23!!
I would just like to take a few seconds to thank you all for every-
thing that you do. In the past few months I have been reflecting on
everything that you have accomplished. Boy, is this Division amazing
or what? I honestly cannot think of anyone else I would rather serve. A
special thank you goes out to those that participated in the Eliminate
Date, and Conclave.
For those of you that don’t know, I asked you for endorsement to
run for District Governor at this year’s District Convention. This is a
huge step in my journey as a servant leader but I am confident that
with your support and every lesson that you have taught me that at
the end of my high school career, I will look back and be able to see
how much you have helped me grow as a person – even if I am not
elected, you have each showed me what true service and commitment
looks like and I thank you all for your support.
With that said, I am so excited to see our division to continue to
grow in numbers and in service hours… so keep it up, Yetis! DCON is
nearing so continue your fundraising efforts and keep looking forward.
With just two more months left in this Key Club term I would like to
welcome aboard all of the new officers! You are the next set of leaders
and I encourage you to question your current officers in order to learn
all that you can about being a club leader. A new Lt. Governor will also
be installed in April. McXine Salva will be leading this division to great
heights. But before the new Key Club year begins, I invite you all to
attend our end of the year banquet. On March 31st come celebrate our
division with me! For more exciting information on this wonderful
event, please see page 18.
With Love and through Service,
Alyssa Yocom

Reed and Wooster High Schools helped out the Reno Kiwanis Club
with a fundraiser: Bowling is Lotsafun. For this event, our Key Club-
bers helped set up and organize the event where hundreds of bow-
lers could come and have a good time while raising funds for Lotsa-
fun. Camp Lotsafun is a camp that one of our Kiwanis Members, Jill
Gabel, runs that helps people with special needs. The day was spent
having a blast in service!
Several key Club members from Reno, Hug, Reed, and
Wooster participated in a Volunteer Orientation at the Ter-
ry Lee Wells Discovery Museum located in Downtown Re-
no. This museum is focused on the discovery of science and
art for people of all ages through interactive mediums. Key
Clubbers will be interacting with children at the museum
as well as partaking in a community effort to educate chil-
dren through various methods. Jessica climbs the clouds
(picture to the right).
Conclave was held on the 12th of February. Here, 5
candidates ran for Lieutenant Governor of Divisions
23 and 45. All of the candidates did an excellent job
and those that were present at the event were very
tentative and respectful. This conclave experience is
one to remember since so many candidates participat-
ed. Congratulations to McXine and Savannah for be-
ing elected as our next two region leaders. All of
those that were present were able to see outstanding
leadership and commitment take place.
At Conclave, we had the opportunity to have 3 generations
of Lt. Governors present. The picture above is all of the
candidates and Alyssa and the picture to the right is :

and Ally, Immediate Past Lt. Governor.
DIVISIONS 23 & 45 KEY CLUB
Lt. Governor 2012-13 Introduction
McXine Salva, North Valleys HS
Hello my fellow Yetis! My name is McXine Salva, I'm D23's Lieu-tenant Governor Elect! I am a rising senior at North Valleys High School and I have been a part of Key Club since my freshman year. I love meeting new people, making new friends, and making people happy and proud. I am nice, honest, loud, FUN, and a BEEliever! (No, not a "Belieber") I be-lieve that as long as you give a +100% effort on anything you want, then you can achieve it! Giving up is NOT an option. I knew what I wanted to be and I kept that in my head at all times. I had the courage to do what I feared. For me, second chances only apply to those who deserve them.
I would just like to thank every single one of you for going to Conclave and sharing such an amazing experience with me! From crying to laughing, I couldn't have imagined a better time with anyone else. Eve-ryone's help will be needed in order to have a successful term. I hope I can count on all of you, Yetis, and you can count on me. I can't wait to serve this spectacular Division! We have a great and BEEsy term ahead of us. Good luck, Yetis! BEE prepared! Keep on buzzing with service :D
Hello D23! My name is Savannah Parsons and I am the D45 LtG Elect. I’d like to introduce myself because I’m hoping to get D45 more involved with D23; we make up Region 6 together! Anyway, I’m from Dayton High School and I am currently a junior. I have been involved with Key Club since my sophomore year, where I started out as the club’s Vice President. I was elect-ed president for junior year, and am now LtG for my senior year! I’ve got to say, I’m pretty excited.
Besides Key Club, I have a few other hobbies that I like to do. First off, I play varsity soccer for my high school and I have since my freshman year. I also played two years of varsity softball but decided to give it up to make time for other hobbies and Key Club. Outside of school I like to snowboard and paint. I also act, dance, and sing. I’ve done musical theatre since I was 4 with my fami-ly’s business, SceneStealers, which is located in Reno. There, I’ve also done tap dancing for over 5 years and am currently in my first year of ballet and jazz. My singing experience besides with SceneStealers also includes singing with the Roy Gomm Elementary School choir at the Silver Legacy every Christmas and sing-ing in the Russian opera, “Turandot”, at the Pioneer Center in Reno in 4th grade. That about sums up me outside of Key Club, but if you’d like to get to know me more you can always look me up on Facebook! (Vannah Marie Par-sons) I look forward to working with you guys in anything McXine and I feel we should team up to accomplish. You have been given a wonderful person for your Lieutenant Governor, so be sure to show her the love! We can expect great things from Region 6 this year, I am confident in that! I’m sending Joker love the Yeti’s way!

a lonely Saturday night: win a date!
All proceeds will be donated the Eliminate Project to eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus from the
world by 2015.
This fundraiser managed to raise al-most $200 for the Eliminate Project which is working continually to Elimi-nate Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus from the world by 2015. For more infor-mation on this cause visit http://sites.kiwanis.org/kiwanis/en/theELIMINATE project/home.aspx. Date Night Agenda:
1. We met at Scheels
2. Romantic Ferris wheel rides
3. Ice cream
4. Beach Volleyball
5. Dinner at In-N-Out
Each participant had a blast hanging
out and getting to know his/her date.
We spent from 5-7 hours together
learning all about each other. The pic-
tures to the left show the couples and
our volleyball adventures. This night
“was the best date of my life!” (Mary
Garcia). Celebrating a successful fund-
raiser for a great cause was certainly
enjoyable for all participants of this
date.

What is a Polar Plunge?
The 'plunge' happens when all the plungers race into (and then frolic in) the Lake Tahoe. Plungers set their own personal goals of how deep to go and how long they want to stay in (within the limits estab-
lished by the EMS divers). Some plungers only get their ankles wet; others stay in and play for a while and our 'chickens' don't get wet at all!
Who can plunge? Anyone with a little guts and a warm heart wanting to support Special Olympics athletes is welcome to
participate. Participants have included seven-year-olds to 70-year-olds, police officers, firefighters, company teams, high school clubs, fraternities and everyone in between. (If you are under 18. your parent or guardian will need to sign your waiver form and be sure and bring it with you.)
For the more hesitant souls, you can still do your part! Register as a Chicken and raise funds,
then watch the plunge from the sidelines and take pride in knowing that while you might be a chicken, you are still brave enough to raise funds for Special Olympics!
Are Plungers crazy to do this? It helps! But remember, our Plungers are doing this to benefit Special Olympics Northern California &
Nevada athletes. If you just don’t think you’ll be able to do it, then give generously when a plunger asks for your donation - and be sure to show up and cheer them on.
What's the minimum donation required? Everyone is asked to raise a minimum of $125. If you raise the minimum you will receive a Polar Plunge
Hooded Sweatshirt and freeadmittance to the post-plunge party. Additional incentive levels of $300, $600, $1,000 and $2,500 are available so the more you raise the more you can earn.
Be a Double Dipper if you Dare! Raise a total of $10,000 by participating in one of the first six plunges and the South Lake Tahoe Plunge
on March 17th and you'll get free housing at the Monte Bleu Resort in South Lake Tahoe, official Plunge
Housing and site of the post party.

Working together for stronger, healthier babies
Since our beginning, volunteers have led the March of Dimes
to more than 70 years of success. Our volunteer
leaders bring experience and passion to helping moms and
babies in their communities and across the nation. And
our ambassadors help create awareness about our mission.
Team youth provides leadership opportunities
for students and advisors of all ages. The students get
involved by creating awareness, raising money and to
speaking out for moms and babies. They're also provided
with opportunities to learn and to teach each other about
healthy lifestyle choices.
In local communities across the country, we're helping
moms take charge of their health, and supporting fami-
lies when something goes wrong. The March of Dimes also
acts globally: sharing best practices in perinatal health and
helping improve birth outcomes where the needs are the
most urgent.
Albert Lowry High School The first few day of February, we took it easy.
On the 9th, we volunteered at our local soup
kitchen. Members prepared homemade Mexican
food to serve. That weekend, our President was
in Reno to participate in Eliminate Date. That
afternoon, a few members were at the last

home varsity basketball games, auctioning off signed basketballs. We made a
profit of $430 to help us go to DCON from the basketball auctions. During our
Winterfest dance, we also had a fundraiser to help us pay for registration for Dis-
trict Convention; we made $175 from taking pictures of couples and friends at
the dance. At the end of January, we began selling Gold Canyon Candles. Due to
fact that our club could only keep $267 out of the $704 we raised. Needless to
say, Lowry has been busy fundraising for DCON. And we are not done!!!! Be-
cause of all of our hard work to fundraise for DCON, Lowry is fortunate enough to
be taking 12 members to Santa Clara for this celebration! Our Polar Plunge fund-
raiser is nearing. Many tickets have been sold and it is estimated that we have
raised around $400 to go the Special Olympians. On the 26, we will be hosting a
Taco Feed. A local Restaurant is kind enough to donate all of the food and the
room to us. On March 17, we are planning on loading a bus up to go to Tahoe to
take the plunge. We are thrilled that we have been able to do such a wonderful
thing to help those who truly need it. On February 16, we had our elections. A
picture is above of our new board. They are excited to get going on their new
term and to fill it with service. As much as we love our new elected board, we are
sad to have to say goodbye to our old one and our beloved President, Alli Lamp-
shire, who will be graduating in May.
