Èideadh Sgoil / School Uniform It’s coming close to that time of year again so here are the details for our school

uniform and dress code for all our Primary pupils from P1-P7.

The uniform consists of:

red crested jumper/cardigan/fleece

white shirt

tartan tie

navy trousers / skirt.

School shoes

Also available are crested navy blazers and school tartan kilts.

Crested uniform items are distributed by Gilmour Sports Ltd. You can shop online at www.schoolwearmadeeasy.com. If you have any queries please contact sales@gilmourschoolwear.com

Generic items e.g. navy trousers/skirts can be purchased on the high street.

We would encourage families to adhere to the wearing of the correct and

appropriate uniform as we have noticed a decline in this especially with some of

the older pupils. The following items are not part of our primary dress code:

Jeans, joggers, zip-ups, fluffy jumpers, etc

Aodach Spòrs / PE Kit No Football Colours

Some pupils are wearing football tops for PE and parents are reminded that we

have a no football colours policy within the school. That means no teams at all –

foreign or otherwise.

Media Soisealta / Social Media Our children and young people across the school, learn about the correct use of

social media and keeping safe online as part of their citizenship education. We

have become more accustomed to communicating via social media in our

everyday lives and there are many positive aspects to this. All staff at the school

participated in Social Media training and have strict guidelines to adhere to with

regard to their use of social media at work and in their home life.

I would ask parents/guardians to ensure that when participating in forums aimed in

providing support for language learning/homework at Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu,

that there should be no discussions about or naming of school staff. Reference to

or naming of pupils should also be avoided.

I would also ask parents to be mindful of their child’s use of social media especially

if comments or pictures of others in their class are being posted on a public forum.

Could parents please ensure that all items of clothing and lunch boxes are

labelled with your child’s full name. With an ever-increasing roll, it is getting harder

to find lost items!

Once again we would like to remind parents to regularly check your child’s hair,

and if you do come across head lice, please let us know. We have had reports of

sightings!

Corragan Uaine / Gardening Club Corragan Uaine completed 6 workshops with the RSPB. The pupils participated in a

range of activities in the school garden. A newsletter will be issued next week with

more Corragan Uaine news.

Bha Clas 1a trang ann am Pàirc Kelvingrove. Ms Dimbleby (local artist) and P1a went to Kelvingrove Park to observe different

buildings as part of their Katie Morag topic. Ms Dimbleby encouraged pupils to

use their observations and transfer these onto paper using sketch pencils. The

children loved this opportunity and produced some excellent drawings. Ms

Dimbleby was very impressed!

Malairt Chothromach / Fairtrade Pupils from the Pupil Council and ECO group were selected to attend a Fair trade

conference in the City Chambers. Pupils listened to various presentations as well

as one from a representative from Mauritius explaining about the cotton

trade. The pupils enjoyed being given this opportunity. As part of Fair trade

fortnight all classes have been participating in activities in the classroom.

Just a reminder to all parents that the transition calendar for P7/Secondary can be

viewed on the school website.

For the attention of pipers and drummers aged between 10 and 25 years, who

aspire to play at the highest level, this year, the RSPBA is holding its Summer School

in Glasgow Gaelic School, Berkeley Street, Glasgow from Tuesday 4th to Friday 7th

August. The Summer School will cost £160 and will be held over four days with a

focus on teaching you the important musical knowledge and skills you require to

play at the next levels.

The syllabus will be based on the RSPBA’s own Structured Learning Programme and

the teaching team has a range of people from the top end of Pipe Band

performance.

The Piping tuition team has:

Glen Brown – Pipe Sergeant with Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia

Dan Nevans – A fellow Piper with Glen in Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia

Keith Bowes – Pipe Major of Johnstone Pipe Band

Keith Bowes Senior – A piper with over forty years of experience in teaching

and in leading Pipe Bands

John Nevans – The Summer School Principal, a former Pipe Major and now

an adjudicator with the association

The Drumming tuition Group has:

Allan Craig – leading drummer with Lomond and Clyde with a number of

major successes under his belt

Danny Hughes – a drummer with Allan in his corps, Danny has experience as

a teacher and player in many different settings

Louise Agoutis – Louise will lead the Tenor and Bass section for this year’s

school. Louise is a member of the championship winning Shotts and

Dykehead Caledonia drum corps.

Some of our guests this year include:

Donald MacPhee – a Gold medal winning Worlds Champion in Piping

Blair Brown – A drummer who holds the world’s championship title for his part

in Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia’s famous drum corps and also has had

regular success in the World’s Solo Drumming Championships.

Craig Munro, the Managing Director for Wallace Bagpipes, a solo and band

performer and a Red Hot Chilli Piper.

The Summer School will visit Johnstone Pipe Band – recently promoted to Grade

Two and working hard to do well and reach the next level.

The main focus of the Summer School is on you playing your pipes or drum and

producing great music.

We will cover:

Instrument maintenance

Tuning

Solo performances

Band performances

How to read and write music

What Piobaireachd (Pibroch) is

How to approach Piobaireachd (Pibroch).

Last year’s summer school was a great success. You can help us make this

The Hugh S Roberton Memorial Trophy

The Hugh S Roberton Memorial Trophy

This trophy is presented to the most outstanding performer, under 14 years of age

in Vocal and Instrumental Classes. Eligible performers were invited by the

adjudicators to take part in the Last Night of the Festival. Dòmhnall was one of only

three pupils nominated for this trophy.

2015 was a very successful year for Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu at the Glasgow Music

Festival. Pupils participated in an array of classes from solo to group and orchestral

performances. This was the first year our orchestras participated in these classes

and we were up against very accomplished and experienced schools such as

Douglas Academy (school of excellence in music) and one of East Renfrewshire’s

flag-ship schools, Williamwood. Both of these schools had their senior orchestras

performing which involved pupils from S3 – S6. The average age of the pupils in

‘Prìomh Orcastra’ and ‘Orcastra nan Teud’ is 13. Our pupils performed at a very

high level and we are extremely proud of what they have achieved.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank their instrumental instructors:

Gwen Yorke (clàrsach), Djordje Gajic (accordion), Ruth Rowlands (cello) and in

particular, Sharon Haslam (violin), who does a tremendous amount of work above

and beyond what we could ever expect of her.

We would also like to thank Donna MacKenzie, Stuart MacKenzie and Fiona

Hesling for both their administrative support throughout the year and their ‘hands

on’ support during rehearsals and during the festival itself. Without their efforts our

pupils would not be able to participate in this excellent Music Festival.

Bilingualism Matters - Martha Robinson PhD Wednesday 13 May 2015 10.00-12.00

How can children learn several languages with apparently no effort, while many adults struggle with even basic French? Can anyone

be bilingual, or are some people simply better at languages than others? Can being bilingual make you more intelligent? Will hearing

more than one language confuse your baby? Can learning German stop you getting Alzheimers? We will examine certain myths

about language and language learning and discuss to what extent bilingualism can benefit society, relationships, and our individual

brains.

Gaelic in Scotland today - Fiona Dunn – Glasgow University Gaelic Language Officer

Monday 13 July 2015 13.00-16.00. Come along to this informative afternoon for an overview of Gaelic language and culture in

Scotland today. The session will include an up to date outline of how Gaelic has developed extensively across many sectors in

Scottish public life and also an interactive aspect giving you the chance to pick up a few phrases and perhaps even a couple of Gaelic

Dear subscribers and friends of Cuilean Craicte,

Thank you very much to everyone who has signed up for the July-Dec series of Cuilean Craicte books so far.

We’re just past half way there – that means we still need around another 50 members to sign up before May 31 in order to be able

to go ahead and produce another six books. If we don’t reach 100 members we just won’t be able to print the books at a cost that

makes the scheme viable, and our Gaelic reading for pleasure venture will come to an end.

We’ll only be able to keep Club Leughaidh Cuilean Craicte going with your help – we'd be really grateful if you could talk to friends

and family about the scheme, share our information, and sign up yourselves if you plan to but haven't already!

If we all work together we can build a community of young Gaelic readers - but we will need your support. Let’s make it possible for

kids to keep reading in Gaelic for pleasure.

Remember that Cuilean Craicte is run by volunteers, and the membership fee covers only the unavoidable costs of design, printing,

rights and distribution. We do not pay ourselves for any of the other work involved. You can find out more about our model and
