Maths Focus: CONNECTING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

Activity 1: Solving Subtraction Stories using Counting Back

Last week Miss Howard showed you all how to Count Back. Counting back is a strategy we can use to help us take away or

subtraction small numbers.

❏ To practise your Counting Back skills, complete the

activity (which will need to be printed) by matching

the Subtraction Story to the Written Equation.

*If you can’t print, read the stories and write out the

equations.

Extension: See the extension Activity links.

Activity 2: Subtracting by Counting On Counting on is an addition strategy, but it is also a useful way

to solve subtraction problems. See below for an explanation.

You will need: deck of cards, Maths book, 100s chart

❏ Watch the Instructional Video by Miss Howard

❏ Select two cards to get two numbers. Record the

equation, taking away the smaller number from the

larger number. Using your hundreds chart or a number

line, count on to solve the problem.

Extension: Put a 1 in front of the larger number to make it a

‘teen’ number.

Activity 3- Subtraction - Finding the Difference

❏ Watch the Instructional Video by Miss Howard

❏ Using the Think Board, create your own ‘Find the

Difference’ story and show how you solved it.

Activity 4- Finding the Difference - ‘All Out!’

You will need: deck of cards, counters (or 10 cent pieces,

m&ms, skittles... anything you like), partner

❏ Player 1 selects 2 cards from a stack of cards, they

subtract the smaller number from the larger number,

and pay up the difference to Player 2 (counters or

m&ms etc), Swap. You continue playing until the first

player is all out!  Activity 5 - Twinks

You will Need: deck of cards, partner

❏ Lay out 12 cards (in a 4 x 3 array). Take it in turns to

make addition OR subtraction equations using the cards.

When you remove the cards, replace the cards using a

card from the deck. The winner has the most cards!

Performing Arts: ‘Create a Weather Report’ How is the Weather where you are today?

Look out the window and explain what it looks like. We can use drama to describe and share weather, explore movement to show what the weather is doing. Let’s get started! Watch the picture storybook: ‘What will the Weather be like today?’ By Paul Rogers https://safeYouTube.net/w/yeGT 1. Brainstorm and recount all the different types of weatherE.g. sunny, windy, snow, rain, hail, hot,

cold 2. Can you move your body, make shapes and movements with your

arms or legs, use your facial expressions or sounds to represent or act out the following weather types:

Hot, rainy, cloudy, high seas with big waves, sunny, clear, snow, thunder storms and fog. 3. Create your own weather report: - Explain the high temperature of the day and the low temperature of

the day. E.g. Today will be a little cloudy with a low of 10 degrees and a high of 15 degrees in the afternoon.

- What type of day will it be? (Sunny, cloudy, rain or a chance of showers, cold- it’s up to you!)

- What will the next 2 or three days look like? (Include the day’s top temperature and conditions- Thursday will be 17 and mainly sunny.)

I have included some Weather Report video examples to give you some ideas: Jane Bunn Reads the Weather Channel 7: https://safeYouTube.net/w/yfGT Kindergarten Kid Reads the Weather: https://safeYouTube.net/w/zgGT Optional Activity: Find a song about weather and dance to it with your weather actions that show the different types of conditions.
