Choir 1. Come thou, Redeemer of the earth, and manifest thy virgin birth: Let every age adoring fall; such birth befits the God of all. 2. Begotten of no human will, but of the Spirit, thou at still The Word of God in flesh arrayed, the promised fruit to man displayed 3. Forth from his chamber goeth he, that royal home of purity, A giant in twofold substance one, rejoicing now his course to run. 4. THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE

BIDDING PRAYER

Officiant Beloved in Christ, in this season of Advent, let it be our care and delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see the Babe lying in a manger.

Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by his holy Child; and let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise.

But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the Church for which he died, and especially in this country and within this city.

And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus , or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love.

Lastly, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.

The Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of angels bring us all. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 11:1-9 The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon the Holy One

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

CAROL Zion hört die Wächter singen Johann Sebastian Bach

Zion hears the the watchman singing; her heart with joyful hope is springing, she wakes and hurries through the night. Forth he comes, her bridegroom glorious in strength of grace, in truth victorious: her star is risen, her light grows bright. Now come, most worthy Lord, God's Son Incarnate Word, Alleluia! We follow all and heed your call to come into the banquet hall.

THE SECOND LESSON Isaiah 35:1-6 The prophet foretells the glory of the kingdom of God

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you."

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not pass over it, and fools shall not err therein.

No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there.

And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

THE THIRD LESSON Isaiah 40:1-11 The Prophet proclaims good news to a people in exile

Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken." A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God!" See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

THE FOURTH LESSON Isaiah 7:10-15 God promises that a child shall be conceived who will be known as ‘God with Us’.

Again, the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said; "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel, God with us. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

CAROL In the Bleak Midwinter Harold Darke

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; but his mother only, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him: give my heart. Christina Rosetti

Stir up thy power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let thy bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

THE FIFTH LESSON Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you." But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."

Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God." Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Officiant Let us pray. We beseech thee, Almighty God, to purify our consciences by thy daily visitation, that when thy Son Jesus Christ cometh he may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. THE SIXTH LESSON Matthew 1:18-23 St. Matthew tells of the coming birth of the Saviour

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." X THE SEVENTH LESSON Matthew 3:1-6

John the Baptist proclaims the coming of the kingdom of God. In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.”’

Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. HOMILY The Rev. Dr. Roger Ferlo

OFFERTORY Angelus et Virginum Arranged by David Willcocks Gabriel to Mary came, and entered at her dwelling, with his salutation glad her maiden fears dispelling, ‘All hail, thou queen of virgins bright! God, Lord of earth and heaven’s height, thy very Son, shall soon be born in pureness, the Saviour of mankind. Thou art the gate of heaven bright, the sinner’s healer kind.’ ‘How could I a mother be that am to man a stranger? How should I my strong resolve, my solemn vows endanger?’ ‘ Power from the Holy Ghost on high shall bring to pass this mystery. Then have no fear: be of good cheer, believing that still thy chastity in God’s almighty keeping shall all unsullied be.’ Then to him the maid replied, with noble mien supernal, ‘Lo! The humble handmaid I of God the Lord eternal! With thee, bright messenger of heaven, by whom this wondrous news is given, I well agree and long to see fulfilled thy gracious prophecy. As God my Lord doth will it, so be it unto me!’ Hail! Thou mother of the Lord, who bringest of gifts the rarest, peace to angels and to men, when Christ the Lord thou barest! Do thou, we pray, entreat thy Son for us our longed redemption Himself to win, and from our sin release us; His succor for to give, that, when we hence are taken, we too in heaven may live. Trans. W. MUSIC FOR THIS SERVICE

J. S. Bach’s settings of Nun komm, der heiden Heiland (Saviour of the nations, come - Hymn 54) are from his collection of 18 Chorale Preludes, revised and finished while he was Cantor of Leipzig's ThomasKirche, and known as the Leipzig Chorales. The Prelude sets the melody in a highly ornamented manner over a dark and brooding accompaniment. The gestural motives in the accompaniment depict a world in darkness, yearning for and awaiting the Saviour. The Postlude setting is fugal, using elements of the chorale melody over the complete melody played in long notes in the pedal. Bach creates a quite declamatory and jagged structure, portraying a world anxious for the coming of the Saviour.

The opening Responsory by Palestrina, a harmonization of a psalm tone, is the First Responsory of Advent Sunday at Matins and alternates plainchant with declamatory verses for the choir. Palestrina (1524-1594) one of the greatest composers for the church and certainly the leading composer of the Roman school, was Maestro of the Capella Giulia, of St. John Lateran, Sta. Maria Maggiore and served several of the most notable popes of the church. His music, of the purest renaissance style and is marked by lyricism and grace, generally sacrificing drama for sheer beauty of sound. We hear Bach’s famous choral setting of Hans Sachs’ magnificent tune with words by Philipp Nicolai: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Cantata 140, the fourth and most well-known movement of the cantata. The organ plays a flowing accompaniment as the tenors sing the melody. Bach later transcribed this movement as an organ chorale, one of his most beloved chorale preludes. Harold Darke, Organist-Choirmaster at King’s College Chapel, sets Christina Rosetti’s beautiful text in a simple and elegant anthem. The soloist is Josh Taylor, Tenor. Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) was the first notable German composer to go to Italy to study, being also a fellow-student with Giovanni Gabrieli under Andrea Gabrieli. He was Organist to Count Fugger in Augsburg, later receiving an appointment at the court of the Elector of Saxony. He is considered, along with Gumpeltzhaimer, Erbach, Melchior and Franck to be one of the founders of German music. His elegantly serene setting of Mary’s answer to the angel perfectly highlights the calmness and surety of the Virgin’s soul in what must have been an astounding moment. David Willcocks was for many years during the middle of the twentieth century the Organist-choirmaster at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. His many settings of carols, written for the famous service of Lessons & Carols there, are charming and colorful, employing sparkling organ accompaniments and lyrical vocal writing. The Litany for Advent Maranatha! Come to your church, O Lord, is written by Alan Hommerding, a Chicago composer and colleague. He is a member of the music advisory staff for the archdiocese of Chicago's Office for Divine Worship, and is the editor of AIM: Liturgy Resources magazine, a quarterly journal from World Library Publications, the music and liturgy division of the J.S. Paluch Company. The descants to Hymns 278 and 57 are by Richard Hoskins. Music Permissions: Church Hymnal Corporation

December 2-9-16-23 Open Hearts: Reflections on Advent Led by: The Rev.

Dr. Sam Portaro, Theologian-in-Residence

The quality of God’s omniscience, and openness are expressed in our Eucharistic liturgies with the Collect of Purity, a prayer that puts it right out there for us:

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

In a series of reflections upon the phrase, “to you all hearts are open,” Sam Portaro opens varied dimensions, perspectives, and implications of this rich theme, especially as a window into Advent, the liturgical prelude to Christmas. In these fractious times of social, political, cultural and ecclesiological ferment and change, Christians are especially challenged to lead from and with open hearts, in service to the God of the open heart.

Christmas Flowers

The tradition of decorating the church with festive greens and flowers is one that delights all ages. Our decorations are funded totally by individual donations. From parishioners and friends. We welcome donations in any amount! This is a great opportunity to honor the memory of departed loved ones, or to celebrate special people and/or occasions of family and friends.

Use the convenient “Flowers” envelope in the pew or contact the parish office with your information. Donations will be taken until December 10th.

Soul Friends: An Inquiry into Christian Faith as practiced in The

Episcopal Church

Are you a newcomer to St. Chrysostom’s? Curious about the Christian religion? Soul Friends is a companionable introduction to the Episcopal tradition. Sharing the exploration with a mentor, experience the life of the community, not just study it as an academic discipline. At the end of the short journey, those who wish to commit to relationship with the church through baptism or confirmation or wish to affirm their commitment to the Episcopal Church, are eligible to do so through the ancient ritual of the Great Vigil of Easter, the occasion of Christian commitment and reception into the community of faith. There is, however, no expectation or assumption that all inquirers will reach this point of commitment in this initial exploratory journey. Whatever your point of beginning, whatever your journey’s end, we welcome you to come along.

Participants are expected to read Sheer Christianity: Conjectures on a Catechism by Sam Portaro in segments of 40-50 pages (about 15 pages per week), in preparation for each of five Sunday morning sessions scheduled at three-week intervals. The Sunday sessions with Sam will be conversational, encouraging discussion on the readings.

Please register with the Parish Office at [email protected] or (312) 944-1083.
