BANK OF AMERICA CHILD CARE CENTERCHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINAArchitect: Perkins & Will (Shrive Associates) – Charlotte, NCGeneral Contractor: FN Thompson Company – Charlotte, NCProducts: 4 Fixed Skylights and EDL FlashingApproximate Product Cost: $1,400

Although the Bank of AmericaChild Care Center occupies onesquare block of downtown Charlotte,it presents a residential face toneighboring homes on all sides. Tothe children who arrive everyday, itextends a friendly smile and an invi-tation to stay awhile.

Numerous studies of childrenshow that those exposed to longerperiods of natural light are healthier, happier and higher achievers. So, tokeep the center bright and cheerful, the architects added plenty of VELUXskylights. For instance, wide high-volume corridors that connect thebuilding clusters are lit with skylights. These passageways are so pleasant, they are used for gatherings and forinterior play spaces.

BRINGING LIGHT TO LIFE AT DAYCARE

Did You Know?Based on a 1999 study commissioned by Pacific Gas & Electric Company

and directed by Heschong Mahone Group in California, it was established to99% statistical certainty that:

• Students with the most possible daylighting in classrooms progressed 20%faster on math tests and 26% faster on reading tests in one year than thosewith the least daylighting.

• Ventilation plays an important role in the classroom where windows can beopened. Students were found to progress 7% faster than those in rooms withfixed windows and no fresh air.

WESTFIELD STATE COLLEGE DINING COMMONSWESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTSArchitect: Juster Pope Frazier, L.L.P. – Shelburne Falls, MAGeneral Contractor: D.A. Sullivan – Northhampton, MAProducts: 90 Fixed SkylightsApproximate Product Cost: $27,000

The Dining Commons atWestfield State College is adjacentto three awkward and dissimilarstructures – two residential halls anda maintenance structure. To bring thevaried buildings together and torelate the dining facility to the newcollege green which adjoins itsfourth side, architects Juster PopeFrazier developed a staggered building plan.

This design identifies varied andinteresting spaces within the largedining area. A ridged roof withwelded pipe trusses is filled with skylights along its spine. This ridgehelps the building relate successfullyto its taller neighbors, and the matching rows of VELUX skylightsidentify a lively, interior spacewashed in daylight.

Walls of windows frame viewsof the campus. Light from these windows, together withlight from the skylightsabove, add a sense ofwarmth and softness to thehard-surfaced interiors.

Did You Know?• The Illuminating Engineers Society of America recom-

mends 50-100 foot-candles in schools in all rooms.

• VELUX skylights can provide all of the natural lightnecessary to illuminate classrooms.

...DAYLIGHT BENEFITS, FUNCTIONALITY, DRAMA, ENERGY EFFICIENCY, PIECE OF MINDWith the recent improvements in

skylight energy efficiency, this build-ing could be built with more than240 skylights in the roof and stillmeet the minimum requirements setby the building code in terms ofenergy efficiency. Each office hasthree skylights. The cubicle areas ateach end of the building also benefitfrom natural daylight coming throughthe skylights.

Building: 10,000 Square FeetSkylights: 248

Electric Venting and Fixed Skylights,Combination Flashing and ElectricVenetian Blinds

Did You Know?• As a result of the abundance of daylight, electrical

lighting may not need to be turned on during the day, therefore saving on energy consumption.

• Since the skylights are ventilating, cooling is done naturally in the spring and fall, further reducing energy consumption.

• Should it start raining while the roof window skylightsare open, a rain sensor will automatically close theskylights.

• All skylights in the building are equipped with venetianblinds, pleated shades, or room darkening shades, allhelping diminish glare and improving the insulationvalues of the skylights by up to 20%.

BRINGING LIGHT TO LIFE AT SCHOOL

THE ROOF MONITOR CONCEPTRoof monitors perform two

critical functions when it comes todaylighting. They provide uniformlighting and eliminate glare.

Bringing daylight through roofmonitors is the daylighting strategychosen by energy consultant AndrewShapiro at the Union 32 HighSchool in Montpellier, Vermont.

The building was designed forenergy efficiency and is projected toconsume half the energy of theportable classroom alternative.Contributing to the energy savings isthe row of high windows thatbounce daylight off a wide interiorlight shelf deep in space. The roofmonitors, designed with Low-E,argon insulated VELUX skylights, bring floods of diffused lighting intoclassrooms and hallways, withoutany of the glare and little heat.

Fixed Curb Mounted Skylightsand Site-Built Roof Curbs

Did You Know?• Good daylighting design can reduce electricity needed for both lighting and

cooling a school. The reason is simple – daylight provides a higher ratio oflight to heat than electrical sources. This ratio, known as lighting efficacy, means that daylight provides more light and less heat.

• VELUX blinds can reduce solar heat gain coefficient by 40%.

The FCM is built out of alu-minum and low-E coated, argoninsulated glazing. All materialscomposing the FCM are non-combustible and therefore idealfor all applications in commer-cial buildings. VELUX recom-mends that the FCM be installedon a 15° (3/12) pitch in orderfor potential condensation to runoff into the condensation chan-nels and weep holes. On flatroofs, a curb adapter made byothersmay benecessaryto achievea 15°pitch.

GENERAL NOTES This drawing illustrates a general arrangement layout with recommen-dations for VELUX skylight installations in a structure for flat roofapplications only. These drawings utilize the VELUX FS 108 modelskylight in the drawing 1 and VELUX FS 304 and VSE 304 model sky-lights in drawing 2.

The architectural/structural design and specifications of a skylight

structure for flat roof applications is determined and provided by others. The design criteria includes, but is not limited to design loads, structural configurations, structural framing member sizes andmaterial, architectural finishes and integration with the roofing systemof the building. VELUX assumes no responsibility or liability in thedesign, construction and performance of a skylight structure by others.

Deck mounted skylights are installed on top of a framed-in structure built on site.
