ART MAUl '81 SYMPOSIUM

Two areas in which we felt Maui artists were very interested were

critiquing art and how to sell their work. On January 30, Marcia

Morse , a. regular contributor to "Artweek" and the Sunday Hono

lulu newspapers, spoke at Kaluanui in Makawao on Aspects of

Critiquing Art and the different roles critics have played. She was

available to talk to Maui artists the following day at J. Walter

Cameron Center.

Art in the Marketplace was the topic of the all day session, Satur

day , January 31, at Cameron Center. The major objective was to

bring together creative and professional talent from around

the state to share ideas and experiences with Maui artists. The

symposium opened with a two hour presentation, Accent on

Gallery, featuring Hawaii gallery administrators Lynn Shue, Kim

von Tempsky, Boone Morrison, Greg Northrup, and Gigi Kunze in

panel discussion. Topics discussed included the relationship be

tween gallery and artist , how an artist might determine which

galleries are appropriate for their work, and how the work should

be presented to the gallery.

(Symposium, continued)

After lunch the symposium continued with Maggie Robinson,

Greg Northrup, Mary Philpotts, and Gigi Kunze talking about their

ideas on How i2. Present Your Art to ~ Client. The symposium

concluded with Placing Art in the Community as the panelists

showed slides of work commissioned by the State Foundation on

Culture and the Arts. The panelists explained how they used local

art in designing the interiors of public and private buildings.

NEIGHBOR ISLAND TRAVELING EXHIBIT

For the first time a portion of ART MAUl '81 will travel to Kauai.

The show will be installed in the State Building in Lihue and will

be on display April 1 through April 14, 1981. It will then travel to

Oahu, where it will be on exhibit April 22 through May 15 at the

Honolulu Hale.

Funding for the ART MA VI '81 "Neighbor Island Traveling

Exhibit" has been provided for by a grant from the Hawaii State

Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Travel arrangements have

been provided for by Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines for promotional

consideration.

JUROR'S COMMENTS ON THE JURYING PROCESS

Considering the limits of even the generous space provided by the

Cameron Center, I expect to determine first - with the help of

more experienced Maui artists - how many works of art have

been, in the past, best exhibited. From then on would the elimi

nation process begin , separating the works which appear to me

less successful than others . Before reaching the maximum number

feasible , I would plan to begin grouping the works according to

media and techniques , with the hope to be able to combine excel

lence with comprehensiveness. At the same time , I would try to

keep the arrangement of the show in the back of my mind.

Originally, I have thought that the extraordinary beauty of the

previous ART MAUl exhibitions was due primarily to the associa

tion and reflection of the exquisite quality of the design of the

exhibition onto the individual pieces. Later, however , I learned

better. After having seen quite a number of works in different

settings, I learned to appreciate their high quality on their own

merit.

The ART MAUl exhibitions create an ambience and environment ,

enchanting the spectators and flooding the exhibits with their own

glow and sense of perfection .

Dear Friends :

ART MAUl is now in its third year of existence. Each exhibition

involves working for the love of art. The community can only

benefit. Art shows itself in every aspect of past and present ,

changing and growing along with the flow of society. We are all

influenced and surrounded by art , even though we may not be

able to create it ourselves .

Art evokes a range of emotions that Nature would, but cannot,

produce. True artists are the antennae of Nature . ART MAUl

communicates Maui's essence on a symbolic level - it stands as

testimony to our cultural development within the State , as well

as on a larger scale.

Although it is truly the culmination of help and ideas of many

minds all working together that create the final masterpiece that

is the show , the flavor and actual content is determined by the

individual pieces chosen to be in each exhibit. We are honored to

have as our juror for ART MAUl '81 Mr. Alfred Preis, past direc

tor of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Mr. Preis

also directed the hanging of ART MAUl '81.

We hope you will share your comments and ideas for future

shows with us.
