CYPRIOT STORY ACTIVITIES
The Cypriot folk tale “The prince of Venice” was introduced to the students of the 3rd
Grade (Class 1, 2, 3) during the Language lesson, in a unit about traditional tales and
fairytales.
The images of the tale, made by the Cypriot engraver Hambis Tsangaris, were given to
the students and they were asked to imagine and make up a story for them.
Then, the tale was narrated to the students and they drew the scene they liked the
most.
The students of Grade 3 (Class 1) created the comics of the story and also a 3D scenery
of the story.
The students of Grade 3 (Class 2) worked
in groups to write and perform the scenes
of the tale. They used some circles to
choose the scenes and the characters they
were going to work on. They wrote the
dialogues and then they dramatized their
scenes.
The students of Grade 3 (Class 3) also worked in small groups to dramatize the story
they have read. They chose their roles, their costumes and after a few rehearsals they
presented their version of the tale to the rest of the class.
During the Visual Arts lesson they studied the work of
the Cypriot engraver Hambis Tsangaris and the folk
tales he collected and illustrated using the engraving
technique.
The students of the 6th Grade (Class 2) studied the story “The Prince of Venice” in
comparison with the five other stories sent by our partner schools, during the Greek
Language lesson and a unit relevant to the types of narrative stories. They contacted a
survey on the Internet and they made presentations about the characteristics of folk
tales, fables, legends, traditional songs and real stories.
They have also studied the tale in the Cypriot dialect, as it was written in the book
Illustrated and published by Hambis Tsangaris, and they organized a script for the
theatrical performance of the story.
During the Visual Arts lesson they visited the Engraving Museum of Hambis Tsangaris at
Platanisteia village, where they had the chance to see the Museum and the work of
many famous engravers not only from Cyprus but all over the world. They also had the
opportunity to see the different kinds of engraving technics and their tools. Afterwards,
students attended a workshop at Hambis Engraving School, where they had the
opportunity, with the guidance and the advices of the artist, to finish their engravings,
that they had already prepared during the lesson of Arts at school, and using the
professional press to print them.
