Not counting drums, what do you do for fun? Besides playing the drums, the number one thing I like to do is go to

the movies. If I‘m not at the movies, I‘m at home watching a DVD.

I‘ve actually been in a couple of movies. You might recognize me as the

bartender opposite Tom Cruise in the movie “Cocktail.” I also love to

travel. This summer I‘m planning a trip to the moon.

Favorite cymbal in your set-up? My favorite cymbal is my Mb20 20“ Heavy Crash.

What‘s the highlight of your career so far?I guess I would have to say opening shows for Iron Maiden was

defi nitely a crowning achievement, and were some of the

best times I‘ve had on tour.

Not counting drums, what do you do for fun? To get away from the glitz and glamour of my superdummer touring

lifestyle, I like to indulge in home improvement. I mow the lawn,

take out the trash, fi x the fence and I bake out on the couch.

Favorite cymbal in your set-up? My Byzance 13“ and 14“ Fast Hihats.

What‘s the highlight of your career so far?Witnessing the production of my signature cymbals at the MEINL

factory and seeing my face on cymbal box sets all over the world.

Not counting drums, what do you do for fun? I spend all my spare time with my wife and two

kids. Besides that, I go to see my favorite

football team, IFK Gothenburg.

Favorite cymbal in your set-up? That has to be my Mb20 18“ Heavy Crash.

It has a massive sound and is extremely durable.

What‘s the highlight of your career so far?That was when we opened up for Iron Maiden in our

hometown of Gothenburg in front of 55,000 people

and got an extremely good response.

MARCH 29 – APRIL 1, 2006FRANKFURT, GERMANY Every year the music world gets together at the inter-

national Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Germany. It is the

biggest event of its kind worldwide. With MEINL being a

globally active manufacturer, it is a necessity to maintain

an attractive booth and have artists on site to showcase

their skills and the cymbals‘ sounds. During Musikmesse

2006, MEINL artists Rodney Holmes, Johnny Rabb, Felix

Lehrmann, Benny Greb and Dirk Erchinger performed in

a sound proof room at the MEINL booth.

to teach students from all over Europe. The most amazing aspects about RHYTHM are the camaraderie and the

In my opinion the Strhess tour was the best summer tour of ´06. There was a great variety of music which drew a different crowd for all of the bands. Personally, I was stoked to be on tour with Shadows Fall again. I always love touring and hanging out with those guys. I hope we can do it again sometime in the future.

The Strhess Tour was exactly that ... stressful! We were right in the middle of writing our new album and we had to stop to go out on the road. The tour ended up being a great run. We played amazing, the fans were awesome, and we had a lot of fun. In hindsight, I think it was good for us because by time we got in the studio to record, we were a well-oiled machine.

What‘s the Chris Adler “Pure Metal Ride” all about?Failure. The inspiration of the Pure Metal Ride is failure – across the board. No one

seemed to be able to create a ride cymbal that had such a personality that it could

stand up and control a rhythm, a kit, or even an entire band. To me, a ride cymbal is as

important to my sound as my kick or snare and anything less than perfect is

unacceptable. It took me years to understand that for myself and then be able to

What are the Thomas Lang “Fast Hihats” all about?My favourite cymbal in my set-up are the 13" Fast Hihats. Why? Let me tell you why:

It has a clean, polished top but a fi lthy dirty bottom (like Yin and Yang, it is all in one).

It is pristine yet messed up, it is full of contrast and controversy. It giggles with a

childlike voice when gently tickled with the tip of my sticks and roars like a wild animal

when brutally abused. It snaps at me when I slam my boot down on the pedal and

hisses like a snake when I splash it with my foot. It barks when I whack it with the

shoulder of my stick and it screams when I ride it half open. It translates my every

mood, vision and feel into sounds I like to hear. After hours of violent abuse it still sits

HOW TO SET UP YOUR FIRST CYMBALS

Every beginning drummer faces the same question: What is the best way to position the fi rst basic cymbal set-up around

the drum kit? The knowledge and experience that will help to guarantee a relaxed playing position on the drum kit is not

something that the beginning drummer has. An important issue in ensuring comfortable playing is the correct positioning of

the cymbals. Following are some valuable guidelines for the ambitious beginner.

The drum throne is the center of every drum kit and is also the most ergonomically crucial spot. Starting from here, it is

essential that everything is comfortably accessible and easy to reach without having to twist or bend. All cymbals should

lean and face towards the throne. This ensures long lasting and comfortable playing without physical problems.

Note: Positioning of cymbals is listed under the assumption of the drummer being right-handed. If the drummer is left-handed, please reverse the set-up.

Why stack cymbals?By putting two or more cymbals on top of each other, new and unique sounds can be created. Modern music requires new and hip sounds which can‘t be realized with conventional cymbals. By stacking cymbals, radical sounds are achieved which refl ect the drummers creativity and open mind. Unconventional white noises and trashy effects are sounds demanded by many producers in today‘s studio world. From a playing standpoint, stacks are used for fast accents and special effect sounds. Due to the fact that they are naturally muffl ed, they can also be used for keeping time, similar to the function of hihats or ride cymbals.

The bottom cymbal contains jingles which enable an exceptional sizzling attack.

An adjustable sustain is possible by using the wing nut of the cymbal stand.

What‘s the Benny Greb “Trash Hat” all about?For three years now I have been looking for a trashier and more

washy x-hat combination, but without loosing attack when I need it.

I also wanted a sound that is very unique, but that still blends in well

with my other cymbals and hi-hat sounds. I experimented a lot...
