    1. Welcome

It was a great day in the 2013 Cygnet Sea Dragons calendar as two games in the local DerbyCup played out. It is a pleasure to report that our U6 team smashed Woodbridge 12-2 whilethe U8 team must have put the frighteners through the Woodbridge opposition as only ahandful of them turned up. More on this in the match report section but needless to say wewon. This all means that we now proudly hold aloft the Derby Cup. While it is true that no oneoutside of the handful that read this newsletter know anything of this Derby Cup, especially

the opposition at Woodbridge, I know those select few will rejoice and cherish our triumph inbeing crowned the 2013 Derby Winners. 4 wins from 4 games.

Just how far is Tynwald Park? The longest journey any of our teams has ever had to make is this weekend (I think). Our U14

Youth team venture over to New Norfolk to meet their U14D Youth team on the famedTynwald Park ground (The return journey is no less than 180 km return). Tynwald Park has beenhome to a number of thumpings this year. Kingborough Lions D (The divisions whopping

team) was given their marching orders 11-0, the New Norfolk C team annihilated Clarence14-0 but on the other side of the ledger there have been 3 draws and two games where only

1 goal was the difference. We are hoping to be on the later of these results (unless we whoopNew Norfolk).

    This week Played 9 Won 5 Lost 3 Draw 1 For 39 Against 19

    This season Played 118 Won 64 (54%) Lost 42 Draw 11 For 444 Against 266

    Above is only for Juniors

Canteen still needs 2 volunteers for the cominground. We have 7 home games this weekend so

we really need your help. Please see Alison fordetails.

Due to the continuous rain recently, the playingfields as most of us saw last round have become

reminiscent of the famous quagmire that Margateoffered up a few seasons back. As we havecontinued to receive rainfalls since Saturday,

training on Friday for Juniors is cancelled. TheHuonville pitch also needs resting so Youth trainingon Thursday evening is cancelled.

    Good luck to all teams

    THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER

The Rambler has compiled a list of 17 quick facts about the beautifulgame that you might not know.

    Origin of the word soccer

Did you know that the word soccer came from an abbreviation of the word

association football? Back in the 1880s, students of Oxford University used to

abbreviate words by adding er to the end. For example, breakfast was referred toas brekkers and rugby was referred to as ruggers. Charles Wreford Brown, once a

student at Oxford University, is usually credited for inventing the word soccer butthere is a lack of supporting evidence.

Where did the phrase score a goal come from?

Did you know that small marks were made on the post to keep track of the number of

goals? Every time a goal was conceded, a small nick was made into the post. Soliterally, a goal was scored onto the post, hence the phrase to score a goal!

    Soccer Ball History

Did you know that the modern soccer ball may have originated from a human head? While no one knows exactly how the soccer ball came into existence, many forms

and variations have been documented throughout history. One of the earliest

documented forms of a ball was made of animal skin from China around 250 BC.Other historians have noted games played with cloth, hides and even skulls. Even

today, there are many different brands and styles of the soccer ball.

    Mob Soccer

Did you know that between the 7th and 9th century a violent game emerged

between villages? The object of the game was for one village to force a ball into the

centre square of the enemys village. The game became so violent that neighbouringvillages and towns would take cover and block their windows. It was said that murder

or manslaughter was the only restrictions to the game.

    Worlds Oldest Soccer Competition

Did you know that the Football Association Challenge Cup, better known as the FA

Cup, is the worlds oldest soccer competition? First held in 1871, it is a competition

between teams from the English football league (Premier League, Football Leagues, and lower levels). There is also the FA Womens Cup.

    Estadio Nacional

Did you know that the Estadio Nacional in Chile was used for more than soccergames? Unfortunately, the games being played were not so beautiful. After World

War II, it was used as a clearing house for refugees from Europe. It also served as adetention center and a torture house. People were interrogated, left to starve,

subjected to brutal tortures, and many were executed.

First goal scored directly from a corner kick

Did you know that the first goal scored directly from a corner kick was in 1924?Cesareo Onzari, who played for Argentina took a corner kick and the ball ended upin the net without anyone else touching it. This type of goal is also referred to as an

olympic goal. Unfortunately for Uruguay, they lost that game because of such a

goal, but they did end up winning the gold in the Olympics. Many say this is why thistype of goal is referred to as olympic.

    The Bicycle Kick

Did you know that Ramon Unzaga of Chile was the first player to perform a bicyclekick? It is a very difficult kick where a player throws his/her body in the air, while

moving the legs in a scissor like motion, in order to kick the ball backwards over their

head. Ramon first performed this kick in 1914 at El Morro Stadium in Talcahuano,Chile.

PeleDid you know that Pele helped lead Brazil to the FIFA World Cup Championship at

age 17? Pele, whose real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, is the only person tohave won the World Cup three times as a player. He scored 1,281 goals in his

professional career and is considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of alltime.

    Youngest Soccer Player

Did you know that Reuben Noble-Lazarus is the youngest professional soccer player?

At just 15 years and 45 days old, the Barnsley striker made his debut on September 30,2008 against Ipswich when he came onto the field in the 84th minute. The previousrecord was held by Ken Roberts (Wrexham) and Albert Geldard (Bradford PA), eachbeing 15 years and 158 days old.

    Juggling World Record

Did you know that the World Record for juggling a soccer ball non-stop is 19 hours

and 30 minutes? Martinho Eduardo Orige of Brazil juggled a regulation size soccer ballnon-stop, meaning the ball did not touch the ground at all. Only your feet, legs, and

head are allowed when juggling a soccer ball. This World Record was recorded inAugust of 2003.

    Chile banned from World Cup

Did you know that Chile was banned from the 1994 World Cup? During a qualifying

match for the 1990 World Cup, Chile was down 1-0 to Brazil. A loss would meanelimination from the tournament. Around the 67th minute, the Chilean goalkeeper,

Roberto Rojas, fell to the ground due to being hit by a firework. The team refused tocontinue to play and the match went unfinished. However, after reviewing footage, it

was found that the firework never hit Rojas. He faked it hoping to replay the game.FIFA awarded Brazil the win, banned Chile from the 1994 World Cup, and banned

    Rojas for life.

    India wants to play barefoot!

Did you know that India withdrew from the 1950 World Cup tournament because FIFA

would not allow the team to play barefoot? India had already qualified but refused

to continue because they wanted to play barefoot! Uruguay ended up beating Brazil2-1 to clinch the cup that year. Lucky for them, they felt comfortable playing in

    cleats!

    Most World Cup Wins

Did you know that Brazil has won the World Cup more times than any other country?

Since 1930, Brazil has won the World Cup 5 times. Italy is close behind though, winning

the tournament 4 times. Germany has won 3 times. Uruguay and Argentina haveboth won the World Cup twice, while England, Spain and France have both won

    once each.

Most Watched Game in U.S. TV History

Did you know that the 1999 Womens World Cup Final was the most watched soccer

game (Mens or Womens) in U.S. network TV history? An estimated 40 million viewerswatched the USA beat China on July 10, 1999 in Pasadena, California. It was also themost attended womens sporting event with an official attendance of 90,185! Many

remember this game with Brandi Chastains goal winning penalty kick as shecelebrated by taking off her shirt and falling to her knees!

Most Goals In A Single Game by one player

Did you know that the most goals scored by a player in a single match is 16? StephanStanis of France, who played for Racing Club de Lens at the time, scored 16 goals

against the Aubry Asturies during a French Cup match in 1942. However, he was not

the only man in history to do so. Panagiotis Pontikos of Olympos Xylofagou performed

this feat on May 8, 2008 against SEK Ayios Athanasios FC. (Note Australian ArchieThomson scores 13 goals in a world cup qualifier vs American Samoa).

    COACHES BOX

Back to Winning Ways, with help from Hendricks and Robey.and Dave:

Regular readers of this column will know that we use a predictive formula

courtesy of Hendricks and Robey to predict the results of our matches and we

change the input variables to our advantage where the formulaic output isnot in our favour. Hendricks and Robey achieve this by calculating theprobability distribution of the coefficient of variation, as can be seen from the formula itself

    which is reproduced here:

where the symbol indicates that the summation is only over even values of n-1-i.)

It is on the record, per last weeks report, that:

    2. According to H&R we will turn things round, at least this weekend, and will win vBeachside, a team higher up the league. When we least expect it our kids will come through

with a hearty helping of the old Sea Dragon spirit.

Hence it was no surprise when we prevailed against Beachside, or was it? The real strength in

this formula is the ability to analyse and interpret it as any budding scientists among you willalready know but failing that you probably simply took our word for it. The middle part of theequation with the cv to the power n-2 divided by the Cv squared plus one with the resultant

number calculated to half the power n is classic coefficient of variation stuff portraying

clearly that at least an inch of rain would fall in the 24 hours leading up to the match. What Ididnt spot though and with hindsight I can now see clearly in the n to the power i/2 part isthat we wouldnt have a referee meaning I would have to stand in and hence take noactive part in coaching duties. This however had no negative impact on our chances as

Dave Sayers was on-hand to take on full coaching duties despite simultaneously trying tofend off a head cold. At 1-3 down in the second half Daves last roll of the dice resulted in us

scoring four consecutive goals to lead 5-3 (if we can produce two more performances likethat Dave gets a name upgrade and will henceforth be known as Big Dave). Beachsidemanaged to pull one back but we held on to win 5-4. Daves changes certainly freshenedthings up a bit and blew away the staleness that had set in with various players screaming outfor a change of position. Josh Wilson in charging through central midfield and delivering text

book through balls for our attacking duo, had his best ever game for the club. Rowan Sheltonwas immense in the second half after moving to defensive midfield. Hugh McGarry, in thesecond half, was supreme in central defense. Silas Richter and Brady Cook relished their

second half run outs in midfield. Christian Sayers and Isaac Beecroft in attack stretched theirdefense and created space and openings for each other with both attackers grabbing abrace. After scoring in the first half Vincent Chancellor even had a run at left back. Of course

it would have all been to no avail were it not for Archie Cumper playing a blinder in goal andstopping almost everything that our opponents threw at him. Other than that Jake Buckland

provided stability in midfield, Hannah Parish chipped in with her regular solid contribution atright back and Arya Clare had her best game so far.

As for the coming weekend at New Norfolk Im sure the outcome is written in the formula butIm arsed if I can find it (remember Dave and I are not experts in formulaic interpretation

either). In an attempt to get some guidance I got in touch with the worlds foremost authority,

the Emeritus Professor of the University of the erm..United Arab Emirates, one, Professor

Abdullah MacDullah. He soon pointed out that certainly the n-1, i=0 part clearly portraysthat it will probably take 1 hours to drive to New Norfolk from Cygnet +/- 20 minutes (and asimilar amount of time to drive back) so all good so far. The good Professor was going to do

some research and get back to us the next day on the likely outcome of the match but alashe was arrested by the state secret police that evening and lined up in front of a firing squad.

It therefore looks like were on our own on Saturday but if we can keep producing theapplication, focus and never say die attitude we demonstrated last Saturday Dave and I willbe more than happy, regardless of results.

    8. Match Reports

Cygnet U/6It all came to easily today, Woodbridge put up very little resistance as the two Charlies ran right

through them. Both Charlies scored 6 goals each with most of the challenge, was being able toget the ball past each other. Abby did some great defence moves and was running well all day.

William was doing great teamwork and making some nice runs. Flynn had some great defensive

moves and was unlucky not to kick a goal today. Archie showed his great speed and improvedball skills; he was unlucky not to score today.

    Great job team Alby

    Cygnet U6 12 def Woodbridge 2 (Charlie G 6, Charlie H 6)

    Cygnet U/7 Green

We had a turn-around for the books this match with our two defence stars turning into goalkickers. Harrys was a nail-biting goal which had just enough grunt to get it over the line with no-

one there to stop it, whereas Rorys shot through the defence with speed and force. Bennyperformed some really good tackles, Huon made a nice big kick through the pack and had anear miss to goals, and as usual Tommy had some exciting trips down the length of the field in

possession of the ball with all the other players chasing him!

Cygnet U7 Green 2 drew Kingborough Lions Black (Harry 1, Rory 1)

    Cygnet U/7 White

What an entertaining game to watch. This week the boys worked better as a team, ball handling

skills were far improved. Looking for the pass or moving around their attackers, meant that we

dominated the game. Southern Christian had managed to defend their goal well on severaloccasions. Well done boys

    Cygnet U7 White 8 def Channel Christian 1 (Floyd 5, Matthew 2, Kes 1)

    Cygnet U/8 Green

It was the best conditions of the season that faced the U8 Green this weekend. With glorioussunshine, a mild 23 degrees and not a cloud in the sky there was nothing the parents, opposition,

kids and referee would rather have been doing.

The game was dominated by crisp inch perfect passing, scissor kicks and volleys with Tristan atone stage not even bothering to stop the ball as he knew his skills were so grand that a hoof

would be enough to score in the top right hand corner.

Needless to say that this all occurred in another dimension and as all other match reports will have

reflected, it was very trying conditions for all and not one for high scoring. The kids did brilliant,

toughed it out and fought to a 2-0 victory. Lauren was woman of the match with a tirelessperformance up front.

The last time we played the local derby it was a lopsided affair from start to finish.

This time the firepower of the Dragons must have been legendary for only three of the

    opposition showed up by 10.15am.

The weather was cold, wet and miserable but I could see that our players were rarin to go. Itwas decided to even up both teams and play 6 a side and rotate all the Dragons playersonto the other team for each half.

Calling for volunteers is never easy so kudos go to Joshua and Callum for being considerateand volunteering initially well done boys and well done to all the kids for playing for the

other team over the course of the match.

Despite playing essentially against each other the game was competitive and there weresome fine displays in attack with Archie knocking in his first goal of the season, having splitthe defence and weaving up field; and also in defence, in particular taking the correct

option to knock the ball into touch when under pressure close to our goal. Toby continues toshine as keeper and when faced with a break away striker made the right decision to run outfrom his box and kick the ball.

Needless to say the two Whalers goals came from a Dragon well done Griffin.

    Well done kids.The Sideline Scribe

A wet pitch after a wet night and plenty of rain clouds looming, but we started the game in the dry

with no subs due to Elliot and Ina being unwell. Sacred Heart kicked off and the play was very even for

most of the first half. Sacred Heart had a couple of players with some real skills, the others providinggood back up. Ned did a great job in goals in the first half with Saras and Toby really working well

together to provide a really strong defence. Romi had a couple of shots at goal which didn't quite

make it through and Riley played really well in attack turning the ball around on a number of

occasions. We went into half time having only conceded the one goal, and scoring none. Greatteamwork at play really putting the pressure on in attack and defence.

In the second half, Rory saved some great kicks at goal, only conceding two more to Scared Heart.

Codi did his best to even the score and came away with two goals and plenty of attempts. Ned put in

a great effort stealing the ball and kicking really strongly to get the ball into our half with Rory andSaras really getting into the play and doing their best to get passed the opposition and to get the ball

into an attacking position. Riley and Romi defended really well providing great support to Rory, with

Romi really thinking about where she was placing the ball.

It was very evident today that the team work is really developing and communications between the

players is improving. Well done to all the players, you did a great job and we were unfortunate to not

come away with another goal or two today.

The Soldiers Memorial Lake proved a new and exciting medium for football on the weekend.

As games around us discontinued and packed up early while snow fell, rivers formed andpuddles deepened to form small oceans, the concern of parents shifted to panic and thesoft left.

After a near drowning incident seconds before half time the Green Game moved to a

neighbouring pitch that was slightly less inundated. The Zebras are a team of great skill and itwas a shame to not see the game in its full flight in good conditions. Having said that, footballis a winter sport and its about being able to adjust to the conditions.

In what seemed a close game the Sea Dragons did enough, which was all anyone could ask

in such conditions. A stubborn win full of character. One of my favourite games for the year.Sea Dragons 2 (Jake 1, Zebras {Kieron} 1) def Zebras 1

Cold, wet, muddy,....a perfect day for football really. And so the team turned up early. Tired,

shivering and with the idea of being somewhere else, maybe at home in front of the fire like

any sensible soul. But once that whistle blew, it was game on as the team took on Friends

school determined to make amends for the previous loss against this tough side. With only 8

players a side it was going to be a long game with no subs.

Molly had proven herself in goals the previous week, and back in that position with Sadie and

Issac in defense, the three did a fantastic job of keeping the ball away from the back of the

net. Toby and Hamish did well in midfield, ably backing up the defense as well as assisting theforward line of Marley, Bobbin and Fynn who were kept busy trying to search for goals. The

team had a brilliant first half with Hamish slotting one away to go to the break one apiece.

The team seem to lose a bit of puff in the second half, and became a bit disheartened by

the tactics employed by the opposition....a situation not helped by the free flowing, let them

go mentality adopted by the ref (me. Note to oneself...be more firm in the future).

And so Friends managed to put five goals away in the second half to end the game 6 -1.

But it was that first half which showed that the Cygnet U10 white have come a long way this

season, just need to carry it over into the second half. Well done team...a great effort.

    U12 Sea Dragons

A slight dilemma before the match as we were missing a handful of players... fortunately atkick off time nearly everyone had arrived and a big thanks goes out to Oscar from the U9'swho joined us for the match so we had the full eleven. A great start to the game for us, as

Sorin blasted a penalty in the first ten minutes (after some crazy defending fromKingsborough) and we deservedly moved into the lead. It was a miserable cold day on a

greasy muddy pitch with the rain coming down. Because of this, we all need to ease back onour passing and launching the ball forward in these conditions, as we repeatedly gave theball away with the speed of the ball on the slippery surface. Kingsborough created a good

attacking move that we didn't cover and it was 1 - 1 going into the break. All in all an equal first half in trying conditions.

    HT Cygnet 1 - 1 Kingsborough Black

Unfortunately, in the second half we had a few errors from the wet conditions that cost us twoquick goals and the lead in a game that we had been controlling beforehand. But we dug in

and kept going forward, with Ewan getting us back into the game at 2 - 3. Then an

immediate response from Kingsborough on the breakaway found us wanting at the backpost and a simple header put the advantage back with Kingsborough. We kept going

forward and tried to get back into the match but the damage had already been done. Atough match for both teams in cold and wet conditions.

In hindsight, the performance from some members of our team was a little bit under par andwe all know we have played much better recently. The defensive qualities in our game (bar

last week at Taroona) have been great over the previous 4 games and we seem to be lettingthat slip. Poor positioning and waiting for the ball leads to us giving possession of the ballaway to the opposition and that has cost us goals against Beachside, Taroona and today

with Kingsborough which is disappointing. In the previous 4 games we conceded 5 goals and

scored 5 so we need to focus on shoring up the defence again. On a positive note we arescoring goals and making lots of chances which is great. But, we really need to look at ourteam game and honestly take on board some of the drills and practise routines that we aredoing in training.

We can't just wait for the ball to come to us, we have to go and meet it and we have to stop

kicking the ball to the other team and giving away possession. When we get the ball downand play we control the game and if we believe in our ability to communicate with eachother and pass the ball around , we let the ball do the work for us and then positive results

and match reports will surely follow.

In my humble opinion this was another game we could have easily won, if we could as ateam manage to stay focused on the game for the full 50 minutes and try to not give the ballaway so often. The opposition cannot score if we have the ball.

I'll be expecting we can win our next four games as we now play some of the easier teams inthe league and we hopefully prove to ourselves that we have improved since the beginningof our campaign. More training required... see you on Friday.
