Electrically assisted bikes: all rates.

All things electric

Power up with an electrically assisted bike.

Chain guards. These protect your bike chains and stop you getting mud on

your trousers.

Comfort grips. You can rest your palms against these grips that stop you

from clenching down on the handlebar and give you extra comfort and fluidity.

Gel. This is the filling used in our saddles for extra comfort on your rides.

P ressure gauges. This refers to the electric-assistance system that

reacts to the pressure you put on the pedals and gives you that flying-through-the-air feeling.

S hock-absorbers. These feature on our bikes’ forks and help absorb the

shocks caused by cobblestones, potholes and other urban bump factors.

S wan neck. The style we’ve chosen for our electrically assisted bikes. This step-

through unisex design keeps you upright: perfect for sailing by in dresses and skirts.

User guide. A booklet you’re given with your electrically assisted bike –

make sure you read it!

cycle guide I rules of the road 23

You can zip through red lights, provided they give way. Be careful and watch out for cars, which may arrive from the left.

When there's barely any traffic on the roads, you can relax, but remember that pedestrians have right of way.

MIXED AREASBikes are merely tolerated: cycle at walking speed and keep out of the way of pedestrians.

PEDESTRIAN AREAS

Cycle facing oncoming traffic while keeping to the right, as cars may arrive head on.

TWO-WAY CYCLE PATHS

These paths are specifically designed for bikes, so make sure you use them for extra safety.

ADVISED CYCLE PATHS

These paths are specifically designed for bikes and you are required to use them.

COMPULSORY CYCLE PATHS

'TURN RIGHT' & 'HEAD STRAIGHT ON'

YOU MUST… > follow the rules of the road (otherwise you might be fined)> stay visible by wearing light clothing or a yellow safety vest> use lights when necessary (this is a legal requirement)> keep your bike in good condition, with inflated tyres and working brakes> say hello to fellow cyclists!

YOU MUST NOT…> ignore the rules of the road: you can be fined up to €135 for failing to give way> cycle on pavements if you're over 8

> cycle on the left and overtake on the right

> forget to wear a helmet if you're under 12 (helmets are recommended for adults too!)

> use your phone whilst cycling – even hands-free> cycle after drinking or taking drugs: you can have your driver's license suspended!

The rules of the road What to do and what not to do.

Blind spots Stay safe by avoiding them.WHAT IS IT?Any space that a driver (and especially large vehicle drivers) cannot see, including in their rear-view and wing mirrors: Buses, lorries, etc.

HOW TO PROCEED?> NEVER overtake on the right – this is where blind spots are at their most dangerous.

> Never stop under wing mirrors or at their height.

> Never overtake a bus whilst it's turning.

> Establish eye contact with the driver – if you can see their eyes in the rear-view or wing mirrors, it means they can see you too.

To the right of any large vehicle, the blind spot can extend for up to three metres! Overtaking on the right is incredibly dangerous – and it's strictly prohibited, too.

To the left of a vehicle, you will not be visible if you're under a metre away. The more distance you put between yourself and the vehicle, the safer you'll be.

This goes for cycling just in front of a vehicle too! From their cockpits, bus and lorry drivers can't always see what's happening directly beneath them. Stay behind them, or put some distance between you to make sure you stay visible.

Rear-view and wing mirrors: These mirrors show what's happening close up, but their scope is limited. Be very careful when cycling next to buses and lorries – it's safest to keep your distance.

When cycling behind, keep enough room to fit a car between your handlebar and any large vehicle.

FACT

40% of cycling accidents occur as a result of blind spots.

Overhangs Make way for large vehicles: why risk it?

All about

roundabouts.

WHAT IS IT?Overhangs are the back part of vehicles, located just behind the wheels. Overhangs are particularly large on bendy buses, which need a lot of room to swing around at corners, taking up space on pavements. Both bus drivers and cyclists need to keep their eyes open!

HOW TO PROCEED?> The golden rule: WAIT for the bus to finish turning! Whatever you do, don't overtake from the right. Not only is this prohibited, it's also dangerous, as buses quickly swing back around again.

> Space permitting, you can overtake a bus on the LEFT, making sure to keep your distance.

WHAT IS IT?Roundabouts are mixed spaces: Vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians all use them. Most of the time, you'll see cycle path markings on the outer side of the road. This is your space to use. The only time you should leave this space is when you're exiting the roundabout.

MINI QUIZ You're a cyclist and you need to take the 3rd exit at a roundabout. Do you:

A. Cycle on the inside lane along with the cars and gesture wildly just before exiting while praying you make it?

B. Cycle on the outside lane of the roundabout on the cycle path in whichever direction gets you quickest to your exit – cyclist's privilege?

C. Cycle on the outside lane of the roundabout on the cycle path and use your arms to indicate which way you're turning?

MINI QUIZA bendy bus is indicating right. Do you:

A. Wait for it to finish turning and greet other cyclists?

B. Take over as quickly and smoothly as possible before it turns?

C. Signal to the driver that you will be overtaking on the left, using eye-catching gestures to do so?

HOW TO PROCEED?> Signal which way you're turning at every intersection by stretching your arm out: to the right if you're exiting, and to the left if you're continuing on.

> Establish eye contact with drivers – if you can see their eyes in the rear-view or wing mirrors, it means they can see you too.

> Hold out your left hand to indicate that you're continuing on without turning off.

> Make drivers planning on exiting aware of you by establishing eye contact.

Pull into the cycle path, giving way to other cyclists and pedestrians first.

Hold your right hand out well ahead of time to indicate that you'll be taking the next exit.

Answer: C – Come on, that was easy!Answer: A – Now you're getting the hang of it!
