Insidethelineslessons.com 2018 Cycle 1, Week 14 –Ghiberti Materials: Print-out of crosses Glue stick 5” x 7” cardboard rectangles Wikki stix (4 per student) Heavy-duty aluminum foil Dull-tipped pencil or stick Optional: Q-tips Optional: school glue Black shoe polish (or black tempera paint, paint brush, and paper towel) Book/images of Ghiberti’s work 1. Look at images of Ghiberti’s work. Discuss the time period and style of his work. Do the figures look static (unmoving) or active and animated? Do the scenes look happy, sad, serious, etc? What makes you feel that? Ghiberti said “I strove to imitate nature as clearly as I could, with all the perspective I could produce.” Describe how Ghiberti used perspective in his reliefs. 2. Use wikki stix to outline the cross 3. Optional: Have a parent brush school glue on the surface of the cardboard near the wikki stix. Use q-tips to spread the glue around the surface. 4. Lay the foil on top of the cardboard piece. Students begin by pressing down in the center, then press around the wikki stix. Use a q-tip, if desired. 5. Use a dull pencil or stick to draw designs in the cross shape. 6. Use black shoe polish or black tempera paint to cover the foil. - If using tempera paint, allow to dry for half an hour, then use a paper towel to rub off some paint to reveal the design more clearly. Note: Use the glue stick to adhere the cross images onto the cardboard rectangles ahead of time. You then do not need to bring the glue stick to class.
