Most of the students are in the same class period; however, there are a handful who come in during different times during the day instead of the main class meeting time due to scheduling conflicts. Communication is our biggest problem. If you have any ideas, we're listening.8 We only have one staff. Students prepare articles for the monthly paper. At the same time, they generally write about one web post per month that is assigned by the editors. I do have some staff members who really like writing for the web site, so they do a lot on their own for the web site.9 They are the same students.

10 One staff covers both print and online publications. As students finish content it is posted online. Some material online does not make it to the print issue, and the online issue has things like multiple photos, audio or video that the print issue won't have. Allow me to ask you, why would you want two staffs to cover essentially the same things?11 All student media members contribute to web with beat stories or multimedia pieces. There is a team of 5 web staffers running the site. They communicate via Gmail and GDocs.12 Yes. The staff members must write one online story per month in addition to their print assignments.13 Yes, same staff but with a dedicated on-line editor14 We just started an online paper so this year it is the same staff, but starting next year, it will be 2 separate staffs. 62 Yes. We have a two day lag time between the time we go to press and we receive the printed paper. Once the paper goes to press, the students then upload all the material to two websites, one with ASNE and the other of our own making. We also upload a pdf version of the paper, as well as, individual articles.63 They are currently. In the past, when I've had editors and writers in different classes I've asked them to use a staff mailbox, leave notes on the board and/or e-mail each other and CC me so I am aware of the communications.64 Yes, same class. What do you think is the most important difference between print and online content?

Respondent NumberAnswers1 Two entirely different audiences. Online audience wants instant gratification, wants to be up-to-date, likes to share via social networking. Print readers tend to take their time. Online content needs to change frequently; therefore it will cover more. News briefs, short news updates are important. Features are good, but they may be read more widely in the print edition.2 video and other interaction3 ?4 additional and more up to date material. Once we get everything working that is.5 Online can be updated at any time.6 Depth and timeliness. The web reports more timely stories using the inverted pyramid style of writing. The print edition goes into more depth in a story. The web also allows the coverage to incorporate more multimedia coverage, i.e. video, SoundSlides, audio, etc.8 Our online presence has more short articles that reflect current happenings in the school and community.9 Print offers more design options, online you can write longer, though people may not read it.

10 The online paper offers audio and video content, and multiple photos to go with stories that in the print issue will have story/one photo. Blogging is a big difference, and having content exclusive to the online paper.11 Online needs to be much more up-to-date news and multimedia pieces. Print should be more feature oriented.12 Online allows us to have more "breaking" news. 13 instanteous communication anywhere there is internet. We love creating a greater connection between the newspaper and our students.14 We can put updated info on the site, whereas print only comes out once a 6 weeks.15 Online focus is on news - print on in-depth and design.16 up-to-the-minute information17 The online is more up-to-date. It has lots of fun things like polls, reviews and opinions. Plus we have a lot of quick interviews that allow the website to display a bigger array of people.19 i don't know. i haven't figured that out yet.20 nothing, timeliness.......22 Our print edition is not available to all of our students. They must pay a $10 subscription fee to get a copy, and only a third of our students do this. So the Web site allows more students to read our paper.23 Ability to communicate NEWS in a timely manner.24 Our students love the videos online. They like the polls and reading different articles from what appears in the news publication.25 get it now27 The online site has given students the chance to write and cover stories that are more current and breaking. 28 Full names of students in photos are deleted29 we only have online content30 multimedia presentations, opportunity to comment, potential for breaking news coverage31 Timliness32 Timely news possibilities in online.33 Print has a more local focus- students, parents, community. We are traditional, serious archivists of the goings on at our school. Online is more playful and casual. 63 We are not fully using web for scholastic journalism. 64 Unlimited space for stories and headlines (not a fixed space as in print)

Two entirely different audiences. Online audience wants instant gratification, wants to be up-to-date, likes to share via social networking. Print readers tend to take their time. Online content needs to change frequently; therefore it will cover more. News briefs, short news updates are important. Features are good, but they may be read more widely in the print edition.

Depth and timeliness. The web reports more timely stories using the inverted pyramid style of writing. The print edition goes into more depth in a story. The web also allows the coverage to incorporate more multimedia coverage, i.e. video, SoundSlides, audio, etc.Our online presence has more short articles that reflect current happenings in the school and community.

The online paper offers audio and video content, and multiple photos to go with stories that in the print issue will have story/one photo. Blogging is a big difference, and having content exclusive to the online paper.Online needs to be much more up-to-date news and multimedia pieces. Print should be more feature oriented.

instanteous communication anywhere there is internet. We love creating a greater connection between the newspaper and our students.

The online is more up-to-date. It has lots of fun things like polls, reviews and opinions. Plus we have a lot of quick interviews that allow the website to display a bigger array of people.

Our print edition is not available to all of our students. They must pay a $10 subscription fee to get a copy, and only a third of our students do this. So the Web site allows more students to read our paper.

Our students love the videos online. They like the polls and reading different articles from what appears in the news publication.

The online site has given students the chance to write and cover stories that are more current and breaking.

Print has a more local focus- students, parents, community. We are traditional, serious archivists of the goings on at our school. Online is more playful and casual. We have had photo slideshows of tatoos, shoes, hair, etc. It is mostly features geared towards teens.

Not knowing enough about how to do the extra features in WordPress... in print, I can always show and teach my kids how to do anything they want to do. On the Web, I have no idea and only know as much as they do. I find it hard to find time to view tutorials and read forums for our highly specialized questions. Also, we can't use an FTP client from our school server so kids create stuff and have to transfer items like Soundslides to flash drive and upload those from home, which is a huge extra step.

Readership. The PTSA controls the school's site as it is and won't publicize the paper. I got myself on the technology committee and we are redesigning the website. The new principal is shocked that the PTSA had so much power over the school's web content. This will change and the paper will be prominently featured. We get most of our readership by pushing content through Facebook and Twitter.

The students are so used to publishing the newspaper every three weeks - it's been a tough transition for them to get into the online mindset. They sometimes will finish stories and not post them or an event will happen and they don't think to post a short story about it online. It's a struggle to make sure out site it's just shovelware.
