Claire Dudek (3) & Sophia Mendola (3) Invention: Cozy Cruisers Invention Convention 2011, the New Hampshire Young Inventors’ Program held its local judging and awards ceremony on February 21 at Wilkins School. e Amherst PTA helps cover the program costs and provides refreshments during the evening. 64 inventors grades kin- dergarten through fourth, submit- ted their inventions for judging. Some inventors entered more than one invention. At the end of the evening, first second and hoorable mention were awarded to each grade. is year there was a new special category, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle that the stu- dents could enter. By Sage Wesenberg Meet Dalton Colen, a senior on Team Entropy. Dalton joined the robotics team as a freshman be- cause it seemed like the perfect ac- tivity and a great extension of his time with FIRST Lego League, a re- lated program for younger kids. He has remained with the team since then and is now a very well respect- ed leader. Dalton’s time on the team has been very important to him. He en- joys being on the mechanical team and being able to do the hands-on work of building the robot. He has gained an immense knowledge of mechanical, electrical and software engineering. Much of this knowl- edge has been taught by the men- tors, whom he feels are invaluable. He says that without their dona- tions of time, money, effort and guidance, the team would not be anything. Because of the hands on work and the direction from the mentors, students receive a broader scope of engineering skills, includ- ing CAD design, than they might in a regular engineering class. Dal- ton values what he has learned and is proud to belong to such a sincere group of engineers. Another great benefit of being on Team Entropy has been the team work. It is a big part of the learning experience as it is essential for all the sub-teams and mentors to work well together in order to be able to design, build and tweak a robot within the strict six week deadline. According to Dalton, the past few years in robotics have gone pretty well. Last year Team Entro- py placed 6th in the Granite State Regional and advanced to the quar- ter finals. is year, he is expecting our team to do very well both at the NH regional and the North Caro- lina regional in April. We have the advantage of multiple, identical ro- bots that allow us to practice game strategy right up until the compe- tition. Currently, Dalton aspires to be- come a biomedical engineer. is is a field that requires participants to work well with their hands, and also be intelligent, curious, and able to collaborate with others. Dalton has certainly developed these skills during his time with Team Entropy. He has been accepted at Northeast- ern University, WPI, WIT, Clark- son University, and the University of Connecticut. Dalton is a committed member of the team and devotes much extra time and weekend hours to work on the robot. He even served as em- cee of our very successful Com- edy Night in January. Although it sometimes does interfere with hanging out with his friends and snowboarding, he feels Robotics is completely worth it when it’s com- petition time! We are proud to have team mem- bers like Dalton Colen on Team Entropy. Meet Dalton Colen, a senior on Team Entropy. Dalton joined the robotics team as a freshman be-cause it seemed like the perfect ac-tivity and a great extension of his time with FIRST Lego League, a re-lated program for younger kids. He has remained with the team since then and is now a very well respect-ed leader.
