Features 1951 paintings “executed in Lexington, Virginia and Black Mountain, North Carolina, shown in Chicago in the fall of 1951. Five paintings were shown in New York at Samuel Kootz Gallery in December 1951. The 1953 series were painted in New York City after spending a year in Europe and North Africa and were exhibited at the Stable Gallery, New York, together with paintings and sculptures by Robert Rauschenberg in September 1953.”

An incredibly beautifully designed and printed oversized hardbound catalogue published in conjunction with the 2001 Venice Biennale showing of Cy Twombly’s twelve-panel “Lepanto” paintings, first exhibited in Venice, The “Lepanto were inspired by the 1571 sea battle which rescued Europe from the Ottoman empire. It was there that the Turkish fleet was destroyed by European forces led by the Venetians, and Cervantes lost an eye”.

This collection of Twombly brings together all eleven works by the artist from the collection of legendary gallerist and collector Ileana Sonnabend, many which have never before been publicly exhibited. The connection between Twombly and Sonnabend came through mutual friendships with Robert Rauschenberg. Also includes texts by Annie Cohen-Solal and James Lawrence alongside great photos of Twombly, himself.

Originally shown at the Kunsthaus Zürich, 24 Short Pieces were all made in Castel Gardena, Santa Christana, in the north of Italy. The totality of the works here come to represent a journey through a landscape of changing seasons, assuming their own reality with flowing transitions between memory and projection. Includes an introduction by Heiner Bastian.

curiosa cabinet and set it into our most poignant private

space… The Coronation or Solar Voyage is a kind of march

from the morning. It begins with a gigantic crayon sun as

helplessly infantine as one could imagine, with an unimagi-

nable audacity… What a painter Twombly is, to make a circle

weep, to make the hero of his very physical mental journey,

an outline of an archaic glyph that means nothing to almost

all. Frank O’Hara summed up this collusion with the refrac-

tion: “Maybe they’re wounds but maybe they’re rubies / each

painful as the sun.” John Cage always said that those who

loved music preferred the softest sounds. That is a good

practical reason to praise the soft refulgence of this luminist
