The results can be exhibited, arranging them like so any scores, like intervals of resonance.”

Bolsena

Gagosian Gallery, New York, 1990. First Edition of 2000. Quarto. Stiff boards in very fine condition, only slight shelf wear.

“Great works of art are those which, in their most criti-cal challenge, afford happiness.” - Adorno

These eight pictures were painted by by Twombly in the summer of 1969 - overlooking the town of Bolsena in Italy. Beautiful exhibition catalogue of late Twombly works – vertical paintings as well as watercolors, all painted in Twombly’s hometown of Lexington, Virginia. In these mostly red toned pictures, Twombly’s paint is “trickling among the lines, like the passing of time.”

Kunsthalle Bern, München, 1973, First Edition. Oblong Quarto. Softbound in very fine condition.

Exhibition catalogue with black and white reproductions of a 1973 show at Kunstalle Bern. Introduction in German by Carlo Huber and Michael Petzet.

Paintings

Stephen Mazoh Gallery, New York, 1983. First Edition. Quarto. Softbound. Slightly soft edges of cover corners, else a fine copy.

An exhibition catalogue of a 1983 showing at Stephen Mazoh Gallery in New York City with an introduction by Marjorie Welish. In a complimentary pursuit, Twombly has created art in which mental activity ceded to manual dexterity, the skill involved with learning how to write. What is remarkable about Twombly is how well he has empowered the mark with a capacity to delineate as well as embody the flux of visual expression.

Coronation of Sesostris

Gagosian Gallery, New York, 2001. First Edition. Oblong

Quarto. Hardcover with stiff boards in pictorial wrappers. No

dust jacket, as issued.

Twombly has taken the Egyptian theme out of the vitrine and

curiosa cabinet and set it into our most poignant private

space… The Coronation or Solar Voyage is a kind of march

from the morning. It begins with a gigantic crayon sun as

helplessly infantine as one could imagine, with an unimagi-

nable audacity… What a painter Twombly is, to make a circle

weep, to make the hero of his very physical mental journey,

an outline of an archaic glyph that means nothing to almost

all. Frank O’Hara summed up this collusion with the refrac-

tion: “Maybe they’re wounds but maybe they’re rubies / each

painful as the sun.” John Cage always said that those who

loved music preferred the softest sounds. That is a good

practical reason to praise the soft refulgence of this luminist

of our late empire. – David Shapiro
