NLC started its endeavor to enter into the field of

    CBM in the year 2000.

    Requested CMPDI to provide technical

    consultancy .

CMPDI submitted a proposal for undertakingconsultancy.

NLC wrote to different consultants including USEmbassy for consultancy so far no reply received.

In Neyveli basin total available reserves of lignite for CBM

    development is 5500 MT.

Likely gas reserves is 8250 MCM.

Geological setup is similar to Powder River basin of USA

2400 MT reserves are already in NLCs leasehold.

Additionally 1000 MT in Jayamkondam is applied for lease

The above areas can be taken for immediate studies for

    exploitation of 5100 Mcum gas.

A study for CBM in NLC lease hold a rea can be advantageous for:

    * The study c an start immediately

    * if suitab le surround ing area c an be added for resources.

    * Carbon sequestration can be possib le in CBM voids - helpin getting carbon c red its.

    * The experienc e and expertise gained in process will behelpful in getting Mannargud i block for majorCommerc ia l exploitation.

    GASIFICATION CHAMBER

    UNDERGROUND COAL GASIFICAT ION

UCG is the insitu conversion of unworkable (deep seated, thinseam, steep dipping) coal/lignite

    into a combustible product gas.

UCG operation is initiated bydrill ing two adjacent boreholesinto the coal seam and injecting

pressurised oxidants like hot air, oxygen or steam into the coalseam, igniting the coal seam andrecovering the combustion gassesthrough the adjacent borehole.

The connectivity between theinjection and producer wells aremade by special linking

    techniques.

  • 8/4/2019 Cwg April06 Cbm Neyveli

    15/21

    USES OF PRODUCT GAS

The UCG gases consists mainly a mixture of Hydrogen,Carbon-monoxide, methane, carbon-dioxide andhigher Hydrocarbons.

The raw gas after processing can be utilized for powergeneration in Integrated Gas combined cycle powerplant of suitable capacity. The gas is also suitable forindustrial heating or hydrogen and natural gas

    production.

UCG Projec t s1. NLC-ONGC Joint venture project

NLCs Board has approved for entering into anunderstanding with ONGC for undertaking aUCG project in deep seated lignite deposit inIndia.

Certain lignite blocks in Tamil Nadu like

Mannargudi North west, Veeranam andKullanchavadi blocks may be considered forundertaking preliminary UCG studies to assesstheir suitability.

The UCG studies will lead in deciding the futurestrategy about UCG development.

NLCs UCG PROJECT2. Project funded by Coal S&T, NLC and DST

A UCG study project is to be undertaken in asuitable lignite block in Rajasthan.

Approved cost of the project : Rs.1125 Lakhs

Project duration : 4 years If the project studies are proved successful,

commercial UCG operation would be initiated forutilization of the product gas in a suitableIntegrated Gas Combined cycle(IGCC)Powerplant.
