Summary of CV

This section describes briefly a summary of your career in science, academic and research; themain scientific and technological achievements and goals in your line of research in the medium-and long- term. It also includes other important aspects or peculiarities.

2016-now PostDoctoral Fellow at ICMAB-CSIC, under the supervision of Dr N. Ventosa;2015-2016 Marie Curie Research Fellow at the start-up Nanomol Technologies SA (MarieCurie Grant Nano2Fun), supervisor Dr Sala; 2014-2015 Research Fellow at the Universityof Palermo; 2011-2014 PhD student in Chem. Eng. at the University of Palermo, supervisorProf. Dispenza and Prof. Al-Sheikhly (University of Maryland); 2005-2010 Bachelor andMaster Degrees in Chem. and Mater. Eng. from the same University, with the maximumaccreditation (110/110 with praise). My efforts as PhD student have been awarded by theRadiation Chemistry Gordon Research Conference Committee and by the Italian Associationof Chemistry for Engineering (best PhD thesis in 2014). Co-author of 16 papers, speaker/poster presenter at many International Conferences and participant in International ResearchProjects, many of them under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency. My background as Chem. Eng. and Materials Scientist has drove me towards Innovativeand Challenging Technologies from one side and Advanced Engineered Materials on theother; common denominators of my Research Activity have been the establishment of un-conventional manufacturing strategies for the design & production of bio-hybrid, engineeredfunctional nanomaterials for Medicine. Under the supervision of Dr Dispenza, I was mainlydealing with the assessment of high-energy radiation processing as “elective” large-scalemanufacturing process for nanogels formation. My earlier Research Activities have beencarried out between the University of Palermo, Dept. of Chem. Eng. and the National ResearchCouncil, Institute of Biophysics. I had also joined Dr Al-Sheikhly group at the Universityof Maryland (USA), working among three different Institutes (University of Maryland, theNational Institute of Standards and Technology and the Brookhaven National Laboratory).I have been interested in Polymer and Radiation Chemistry. In the frame of the MarieCurie Project Nano2Fun, I have been focused on the design & development of a semi-continuous pilot-plant starting from a lab-scale plant, operating with supercritical fluids for theproduction of nanoparticles. Nowadays, I am focused on green and sustainable compressed-fluid technologies for chemical processes and large scale production of nanomaterials. I aminvolved in (i) design, synthesis and characterization of engineered nanoparticles for drugand gene delivery; (ii) CO2-based process for nanomaterials manufacturing at large-scale;(iii) study of a new class of CO2-based-surfactant-free, pressure responsive nanostructuremedia for high-added value particulate material production.  I am strongly interacting both withpeople from the Academia or the Industry. I am also involved in teaching&tutorial activities, both in the class as lecturer and as tutor of master&PhD students. H2020 projects writer. Theinherent multidisciplinary nature of my projects give me the opportunity to interact everydaywith people with different scientific backgrounds and to broad my scientific knowledge. Livingabroad (USA, and now Spain) and join international groups have improved my communicationand interpersonal skills. Naturally occurring independent, curios and creative, the dynamic andstimulating environments which I have been exposed to have refined my capacity of beingmultitasking, independently carrying out my work, taking initiatives and managing my time.

My main task was the Scale-up of a compressedFluid-based technology (DELOS-SUSP) already developed at lab-scale from the company. Ihave been also strongly involved in other projects dealing with the design and synthesis of newnanomaterials for drug-delivery and with the development of new scale-independent nanoreactors forchemical and industrial processes. Common denominator of all the projects has been the exploitationof compressed CO2 as elective, green solvent for large-scale production of nanomaterials. In orderto finalize my work, I have worked in team with peers and younger scientists of the company. Manytimes I have been the leader of the team, managing my time/tasks and the ones of the collaborators.I have written Research Projects and I have been involved in collaborations with external partners, either from the Industry or Academia.

More in detail, 1. Design andsynthesis of engineered-nanomaterials with tailored properties for Advanced Medicine, exploitingboth “conventional” and “alternative” synthetic routes. Inverse microemulsion polymerizationand crosslinking has been used as "convetional" strategies for PVP-based nanogels, whileradiation-induced crosslinking has been used as "alternative" strategies for the production of similarPVP-based nanogels. 2. Assembly of composite bio-hybrid nanodevices exploiting PVP-basednanogels as fundamental building block. Conjugation reactions involving PVP-based-nanogels assubstrates and bio-active molecules such drugs, peptides, antibodys, proteins, DNA etc as functionalmolecules. 3. Establishment of e-beam irradiation processing as reliable manufacturing process forthe generation of a wide family of polymer-based-nanocarriers that can constitute a “base materialplatform” for the treatment and diagnosis of various diseases. 4. Kinetic and mechanistic studies,

carried out using research-type electron accelerators, in order to master the relationship betweene-beam irradiation processing and product properties and, in turn, optimize both product designand manufacturing process conditions. 5. 3 Employing entity: Universitá di Palermo Type of entity: UniversityProfessional category: PhD studentStart-End date: 01/01/2011 - 31/12/2014 Duration: 3 yearsType of contract: Grant-assisted student (pre or post-doctoral, others)Dedication regime: Full timePerformed tasks: During my PhD, a new promising approach based on e-beam radiation-inducedradical crosslinking of a water soluble, biocompatible synthetic polymer has been developed. Inparticular, the possibility of generating Poly-N-(Vinyl-Pyrrolidone)(PVP)-based nanocarriers, i.e.nanogels with a base PVP structure, tailored physico-chemical properties (particles size distribution, surface charge density) and multifunctionality has been explored. A thorough product analysis onthe generated nanoparticles through different characterization techniques, such as dynamic andstatic light scattering, photo-correlation spectroscopy, FT-IR, Raman, solid state NMR and XPSspectroscopies, SEM and AFM, has been carried. PVP-based nanogels have been then usedas building blocks for the assembly of tumor-target “composite” nanodevices. “Model” ligandswith various biological functions and drugs have been conjugated to the nanogels. Moreover, thebiocompatibility and localization pattern of the nanocarriers in cell cultures have been evaluated. It has been demonstrated that all the Nanogels (NGs) produced are biocompatible and able to beinternalized by cells. Furthermore, the many functional groups grafted on the NGs are availablefor coupling reactions with bioactive molecules, such as targeting moieties, drugs and metal-ionschelating agents. This collective evidence validates the generated nanostructures for the intentthey have been designed for, i.e. as nanocarriers in the biomedical field. E-beam irradiation usingindustrial type accelerators has demonstrated to be a viable manufacturing process since it grantshigh yields in terms of recovered product and high throughputs. Moreover, through a proper selectionof the experimental parameters, this approach has allowed to obtain NGs with the desired properties,in terms of size, surface charge density, degree of crosslinking and functionality.Applicability in teaching and/or research: Seminars for the following classes: 2011-2014Chemistry - BD in Chemical Engineering (30 hrs Practical work_classroom-problems)_AssistingProf. G.
