Data description:

In Time 2 but not included in Time 3:

Bariland that cannot grow rice (T2A3), ownership of bicycle (T2C5), transportation of firewood by tractor (T2E24D)

Type and number of second (T2B12B_1 and T2B12B_2) and third (T2B12C_1 and T2B12C_2) other farm animals are removed from Time 3 dataset and codebook.

Records of office edit time and supervisor (T2OFEDITand T2SUPER) were removed from Time 3.

In Time 3:

All variables beginning with T3A0 are new and are used to compare new data to Time 2 data.

Interviewers’ checkpoints were added to Time 3 to check how respondents obtained livestock fodder (T3B27), firewood (T3E27), wood for building materials (T3E33), if water collection occurred within or outside neighborhood boundaries and if the source is public or private (T3C22_1 and T3C22_2, T3C25_1and T3C25_2).

Time 2 measures of family owned bari and khet (T2A10G and T2A18G) were removed from Time 3 and included under other land arrangements (T3A10F_1 and T3A18F_1).

The measures of other activities on land that is not being farmed in Times 2 and 3 have different names (T2A52 and T3A52A) but report the same information.

Time 2 measure of what other electrical appliances the respondent has (T2C55) is changed in variable name in Time 3 measure of what other electrical appliances the respondent has (T3C55A). They are both, however, still coded as number of other electrical appliances.

Time 3 includes a measure of a third farm implement owned by the respondent (T3C18C) where Time 2 only reports two.

Response options for location to collect drinking water of motor, water tank, pipe tap from a natural source, and irrigation canal (T2C26F, T2C26G, T2C26H, and T2C26I) were removed from Time 3 and replaced with the response of other locations (T3C26F).

In Time 2, poor management as a reason for a decrease in production is measured in variable T2E6J and other reasons are reported in variable T2E6I. However, in Time 3, poor management is reported in variable T3E6I while other reasons are reported in variable T3E6J and specified in variables T3E6J_1 and T3E6J_2.

Time 3 includes an age variable for a fifth respondent (T3_AGE5), where Time 2 only provides four age variables.

Logistical measures of date of interview (T3_DATE), household and neighborhood ids (T3_HHID, T3_HOUSEID, T3_NEIGHID), place of interview (T3_PLACE), and pre-edit time (T3EDITID) were added with Time 3 data.

Time 2 measure of number of respondents participating in the household survey (T2PRSN) was changed to be measured in an expanded serial number variable form in Time 3 (T3_SNO1, T3_SNO2, T3_SNO3, T3_SNO4, and T3_SNO5)

Appendix 3 Differences Between Time 1 (Baseline) and Time 2 Agriculture Surveys

1. If a household owns/farms less than .5 Kattha, the amount was recorded as 0 in Time 1. All fraction responses were also rounded. In Time 2, the survey records fractions of land (e.g. .25).

2. Time 1 asks about current crops grown (at time of interview). Time 2 asks about all crops grown over the 12 months prior to the interview.

3. Question F4 on crop damage 3 years ago is coded in Time 1 as 1 = a lot, 2 = some degree, and 3 = a little. In time 2 the codes are 1= a lot, 2 = some, and 0 = not at all.
