ACADEMIC PORTFOLIOSELECTED DIPLOMA PROJECT: BOOK CITYBook City is a new node connecting to the existing legibility of the urban context with it’s strong street presence creating a new entity within Edinburgh’s literary quarter. It opens the New Calton Burial Ground to form a green space in the city. The scheme sits tall in the corner of the graveyard.

SELECTED PROJECTS:

Aiobhneas Childrens’ CentreOur ambition for the Aiobhneas Women and Childrens Refuge Centre was to provide a safe haven for victims of domestic violence. Our new wing occupies the northern corner of the triangular site and addresses the Kilmore Road. It establishes a new entrance and creates a less institutional presence on the street. The new element is clad in slate and reads as a shelter-ing protective form. Openings to the steet are kept to a mini-mum but the building opens up with extensive areas of glazing to the courtyard space within. Essentially this project adopts the idea of a protective garden wall enclosing an interior with the roof as an independent element that weaves through the site.

Restoration of Mausoleum and Proposed Visitor CentreOver and above the mausoleum’s physical purpose of be-ing the resting place of the Argylls, it has a function to honour the memory of those individuals’ lives. Memory can also play an important role in the architecture of the visitor centre. The building can be a memory of the mausoleum without hav-ing to appear like one itself. This would be done imaginatively through the design of an entrance courtyard that would relate to the physical proportions and ephemeral character of the mausoleum. A small enclosed entrance courtyard deals withthe sensitivity arising from groups of visitors arriving in what is a private and contemplative setting – a cemetery. The building’s courtyard also helps to screen some of the activ-ity that inevitably occurs around an entrance as well as provid-ing a focus for the surrounding rooms to look into. This internal aspect reduces the amount that the building has to lookoutwards, which helps maintain the privacy of the cemetery.
