This joint effort between Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and UNESCO has objectives to strike a balance between conserving biodiversity, promoting economic and social development and maintaining associated cultural values in Indonesia, particularly within and surrounding biosphere reserves. An important book has been published which is SOEDJITO, H (Ed.). 2004. Pedoman Pengelolaan Cagar Biosfer di Indonesia (Guideline for Biosphere Reserve management in Indonesia). 18 January 2002 – October 2002: Acting BRF Coordinator of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Bogor, Indonesia.

Responsible to manage the BRF (Bulungan Research Forest), to develop a good relation to local government and institutions, as well as to coordinate CIFOR cooperation with Mulawarman University a specially in regards with MacArthur grant to the graduate school in Forestry.

September 1999 – October 2002: Site Manager/Scientist the Bulungan Research Forest (BRF) of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Bogor, Indonesia.

Managing research sites and stations at Seturan and Loreh, Malinau District, East Kalimantan Province, including financial and human resources management as; assist team of researchers with the training and supervision of field crews, collection of field data and their analysis, and preparation of scientific and donor reports related to sustainable forest management efforts in the hill-dipterocarp forests in East Kalimantan. Specifically to assist in the supervision and co-ordination of field research and manage day-to-day field activities of the project on Forest Science and Sustainability: the Bulungan Model Forest; participate and facilitate the organisation of technical training for field staff; establish a database framework for the project, including remote sensing and other spatially referenced information. To assist other research activities including landscape assessment studies, adaptive Co- Management studies, NTFP studies, biological inventory; supervise graduate students field research; undertake a general survey of BRF and visit and develop collaborations with logging companies in the field and in their Branch and Head offices, universities, local governments, WWF, Kayan Mentarang National Park, and NGOs.

1997 - 1998 National coordinator of "ITTO Borneo Biodiversity Expedition 1997", Collaboration Between the Governments of Indonesia and Malaysia sponsored by International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO).

A joint scientific expedition between Indonesian and Malaysian scientists to the Bentuang Karimun National Park in West Kalimantan and Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary in Sarawak Malaysia. The expedition conducted in September - November 1997 and produced two books namely: ITTO. 1998.ITTO Borneo Biodiversity Expedition 1997.Yokohama, Japan, and M. Kuswanda. Paul Chai P.K., and I.N. Surati Jaya. 1999. ITTO Borneo Biodiversity Expedition 1997: Scientific Report. Yokohama, Japan.

1995 - 1999 Project leader of "Bentuang Karimun National Park Project in West Kalimantan" PD 26/93 funded by ITTO and implemented by WWF Indonesia for Department of Forestry. This project is to develop a model of natural forest management through a National Park system that not only will serve conservation of species and ecosystems, but will also accommodate other purposes such as the socio-economic development of local and regional communities. This project is also a part of the development of Bentuang Karimun/Lanjak Entimau Biodiversity Area as the first transfrontier conservation between Indonesia and Sarawak, Malaysia. A 25 years management plan for the Betung Kerihun National Park was developed. In addition, two books were published namely Soedjito, H. (Ed.). 1999. 1991 - 1995 Counterpart and Research Coordinator of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) on the Kayan Mentarang Project, East Kalimantan.

The aim of the project was to establish a long-term conservation program for the Kayan Mentarang Nature Reserve in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Starting to establish field station for long-term research of forest dynamics and its interaction with people in Lalut Birai, East Kalimantan as well as research station for biological resources management and its ex-situ conservation in TAHURA Bengkulu.

1995 – 1998: Affiliate Supervisor for Graduate School, Department of Environmental Science, University of Indonesia. Supervised graduate student to prepare research proposal, conduct field works, and write a thesis. One student works on ethnoecology of Dayak people in surrounding Betung Kerihun National Park, West Kalimantan has been supervised and graduated.

1993 – 31 May 2015: Senior Researcher in Forest and Human Ecology at Herbarium Bogoriense, Research Center for Biology, The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Cibinong, Indonesia.

Conducting research on Human Ecology (particularly of Dayak of Kalimantan in the fields of shifting cultivation, local knowledge, and ethnobiology) and Forest Ecology (particularly nutrient cycling, root systems, succession of tropical rainforests, forest dynamics), Culture and Conservation, Sustainable Forest Management, Project design and evaluation, as well as Fire Management. It tasks also assist and supervise junior researcher within Research Center for Biology of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, as well as advisory member of master and doctorate students to get their degrees from several universities. In relation with Government of Indonesia, act as team leader when there are collaboration with Ministry of Forestry for change of forest land status in Indonesia. Collaborating integrated research with other research institutes both Indonesian and foreign institutions.

Its principal investigator was Prof. Dr. Andrew Pete Vayda and other members were Dr. Kuswata Kartawinata, Dr. Carrol P. Colfer, Dr. Nancy L. Peluso, Dr. Cynthia McKay, and Mr. Timothy Jessup. Many scientific papers were published from this project.
