A Message from the President

Dr. Julianna Barnes

Welcome to the Cuyamaca College 2020 Virtual Commencement Ceremony. Today’s ceremony marks a major personal milestone for each one of you, culminating in the awarding of your certificate or degree. And while this isn’t the ceremony many of you envisioned, it is one you will never forget.

Each of you come to Cuyamaca College with your own personal journey, goals, and dreams. Collectively, you share this experience that is unlike any other. Despite great challenges, you have persisted and today you can take great pride in your accomplishments. While many have supported you along the way – family, friends, faculty, and staff – you made the decision to pursue your education and you have overcome tremendous obstacles and exercised hard work and determination to reach today’s commencement ceremony.

The root of the word commencement – commence – means “to begin.” Thus, today’s ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter in your life. That is an especially beautify sentiment in the world in which we are living. A new beginning is full of hope, and hope will help us all persist.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the entire Cuyamaca College community of faculty, staff, and administrators, all of us are extremely proud of each one of you. We hope your education will propel you into a life filled with a good measure of happiness and joy, and you will use your education and talents to the benefit of the public good.

Student Speaker 2020KYRIE MACOGAY

Kyrie Macogay, a history major at Cuyamaca College since 2015, is transferring to San Diego State University to continue her studies in social science. Her professional goals are to work in the higher education system as a professor, and possibly obtain a doctorate in educational leadership.

Kyrie is an alumna of Pathway Academy (formerly the First Year Experience) and worked as a Student Engagement Ambassador in Student Affairs. Her interest in student government led to her becoming a senator with the Associated Student Government in 2016. She expanded her involvement as the Cuyamaca College Student Trustee for the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Board of Trustees from 2017 to 2019. She is the immediate past-President of the Cuyamaca College Associated Student Government.
