CUSE Grants Program 2020
“The grant program will support faculty research in all disciplines that span across basic, translational and applied sciences, social sciences, physical and life sciences, engineering, liberal arts, humanities, professional schools, creative research, and various forms of all scholarly activities. The expectation is for CUSE Grant Program-funded faculty members to seek extramural support that will increase the national and international recognition of the awardees, their programs, and the university...”

Interdisciplinary teams and individuals are eligible to apply. However, to be competitive, individual applications must demonstrate the highly innovative nature of the work.

I2 Research Grants characteristics: Funding is capped at $30,000, per application They are for a 2 year duration Applications support both: Individuals – Must be innovative, and can be disciplinary in nature Teams – Interdisciplinary PI/team should demonstrate success in their field(s) and how
they are competitively positioned for continued success. Project Narrative section is 6 pages
Deadline for submission is 5pm, February 17, 2020

Good to Great Grant characteristics: Funding is capped at $30,000, per application They are for a 2 year duration Applications support individuals or teams Lead PI for G2G must have submitted an unsuccessful (not funded)

Interdisciplinary Seminar Grant characteristics: Funding is capped at $10,000, per application They are for a 2 year duration Applications support individuals or teams Designed to cover the costs of seminar series (e.g.-
refreshments, space rental, travel and/or honoraria invited speakers). Not for research activity or for departmental seminars Project Narrative section is 3 pages

Funds can be requested for the following allowable costs:o Salaries & Wages for PIs and Co-I’s – limited to one (1) month
o Other Salaries & Wages – For I2 & G2G grants, allowable for postdocs, students, and essential staff. “The CUSE Grant program recognizes the importance of graduate and undergraduate training and strongly encourages PI’s to involve graduate and undergraduate students in CUSE Grant activities”
o Fringe Benefits – budget template assigns current FB corresponding to the salary lineo Equipment – total is limited to $5,000 I2 and G2G
o Travel – Must be directly related to CUSE grant project activities
o Other Direct Costs – Materials & Supplies (ex. meeting supplies, books), Consultant Costs (limit 25% of budget), Purchased Services (ex. transcription or translation costs),Rental of Off-site Facilities, Human Subject payments, and other relevant expenses (ex. archive fees, food & beverages for all-day workshops)

Intended to minimize potential conflicts of interest in the review process
Include the following:o All Syracuse University faculty co-authors on publications w/in past 3 yrs,

past 3 yrs, including current and planned collaborations. o All Syracuse University-based thesis or postdoctoral advisees/advisors
Conflict of Interest Form (Upload)
1st level screening will consist of checking margins, page limits, font sizes, line spacing, and inclusion of required sections, etc.
Program specific items will be checked (e.g. external reviews for G2G)
Compliant proposals will then be prepared for distribution to review panels
Non-compliant proposals will be noted and compliances issues summarized for reviewers consideration
Reviewers are Syracuse University faculty, as recommended by Associate Deans for Research from each school and college
Review Process 1st Stage Screening
Reviewers from a variety of disciplines will be engaged. Evaluation Criteria: Overall merit (25%) Qualifications of project personnel and adequacy of facilities and resources (25%) Relevance of the project and alignment with current & future research trends,
extramural funding priorities, or with national/intl awards for recognition, (25%) Potential success for extramural funding, enhanced reputation, and compliance
with reporting requirements (25%)
Reviewers will sort proposals into categories: Must fund High priority for funding Medium priority for funding Lower medium priority for funding Low Priority for funding Do Not fund
Funding decisions based on evaluation rankings & availability of funds
Merit Review Process
13 review teams formed, with 3 reviewers/ per team
9 additional alternate reviewers were brought on to minimize COIs
ALL reviewers signed Non-disclosure agreements to maintain confidentiality
Expertise of review teams were matched with proposals to the degree reasonable/practicable
Each review team assigned between 7 -11 proposals to review/score
Teams were multi-disciplinary, with lead reviewer assignments made with intent of most closely aligning expertise to proposals
