CURTIN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY PLAN 2013 - 2017 OUR VISION WHERE WE ARE GOING “An international leader in information management: building connections, building communities and building places.” The Library vision complements the University’s vision in research and education to be a beacon for transformational change embracing the challenges and opportunities of our times to advance understanding and positively change lives. We will build connections that provide students and staff with information both in physical and online environments. By providing access to information resources and services scholarly communities will be built as both physical and virtual places. OUR MISSION WHY WE EXIST We are committed to leadership, innovation and excellence in scholarly information and enabling technologies, to deliver resources, services and spaces for the benefit of Curtin’s students, staff and the wider community. OUR VALUES WHAT WE BELIEVE IN The Library shares the University’s values of integrity, respect, courage, excellence and impact. In addition we place emphasis on the core values of our profession: • Promotion of the free flow of information and ideas • Connection of people and ideas • Commitment to literacy, information literacy and learning • Respect for the diversity and individuality of all people • Preservation of the human record • Excellence in professional service to our communities • Partnerships to advance these values. ENGAGEMENT AND IMPACT The Library will: • expand outreach and engagement locally, regionally and internationally • provide inclusive and supportive services for the communities we serve Engaging students in their learning is central to the Library’s mission to provide resources and services which give all students the opportunity to succeed regardless of SES, disability, ethnic background or personal preferences. We will engage with staff to highlight the Library as a place for scholarship to advance their needs in teaching and research. Engagement with the broader community, regional, national and international will form part of our activities in support of our vision. TEACHING AND LEARNING The Library will: • partner with academic and professional staff in the teaching and learning process • provide a richly interactive and personalised physical and virtual library experience • align collection building with innovations in education and research The Library will offer an experience that is richly interactive, engaging and personalised that will assist students to succeed at University by providing learning experiences that suit them best. The Library will provide physical facilities that provide opportunities for both individual and collaborative learning, plus the flexibility to access library resources and services from anywhere, at any time and on any device. RESEARCH The Library will: • contribute to raising the University’s research profile • build strong relationships with researchers The Library supports Curtin’s vision to be a research intensive university and will focus its resources and services in areas of high-quality research, contributing our expertise in scholarly communication and data management to maximise the exposure and availability of Curtin research. ENGAGEMENT AND IMPACT

The Library will expand outreach and engagement locally, regionally and internationally.In 2016, the Library will:

• Conduct a materials availability survey using Curtin’s revised methodology and promote the methodology to the Library profession

• Review artwork in the Robertson, Graduate School of Business and Kalgoorlie Libraries

• Enhance the Library’s mobile presence with context-sensitive resources and services

The Library will provide inclusive and supportive services for the communities we serve.In 2016, the Library will:

• Use a design-thinking approach to improve the Library’s front-line client experience

• Promote the Project Endeavour Special Collection

• Review and update the Library Statute

TEACHING AND LEARNING

The Library will partner with academic and professional staff in the teaching and learning process.In 2016, the Library will:

• Investigate and implement a reading list solution

• Develop and implement an Information Literacy Strategy

The Library will provide a richly interactive and personalised physical and virtual library experience.In 2016, the Library will:

• Implement the new Library website

The Library will align collection building with innovations in education and research.In 2016, the Library will:

• Use the Library’s strategic influence to raise awareness of the benefits of Open Textbooks in the University learning and teaching environment

• Prepare for the introduction of Curtin Medical School

RESEARCH

The Library will contribute to raising the University’s research profile.In 2016, the Library will:

• Migrate the Library archives and espace to new software

• Investigate digital preservation software systems options for the Library

• Work collaboratively with other areas of the University to enable the implementation of ORCID

• Investigate Curtin Authors Citation Map

• Provide a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) minting service for Curtin researchers

The Library will build strong relationships with researchers.In 2016, the Library will:

• Expand the Digital Mineral Library with geochronological data from the sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (the ‘SHRIMP’)

• Ensure the Library’s comprehensive research support program has sufficient, well qualified and confident Library staff

• Map the research journeys at Curtin

PEOPLE AND CULTURE

The Library will be an agile, responsive and versatile area, committed to excellence, innovation and impact.In 2016, the Library will:

• Review the quality program and its documentation

• Investigate how the Library can be proactive in sourcing extra funding/grants in order to facilitate the Library’s financial position

• Develop a Robertson Library Collection Disaster Plan

The Library will be driven by dynamic staff with shared values and common purpose.In 2016, the Library will:

• Embrace a Library culture that values staff

• Implement a team based Library structure

• Create a marketing ethos across the University Library

• Introduce a mentoring program for Library staff and in particular focus on new line managers

• Improve the Induction and Refresher Program for Library staff

The Library will engage students and staff as partners in a flexible, inspiring and technologically advanced environment.In 2016 the Library will:

• Introduce a Click and Collect service
