RESEARCH AGENDA AND AREAS OF INTEREST

My main professional interest is to understand how young people’s interactions with their intra- and

interpersonal worlds influence their healthy development and thriving. My research considers the interaction

between the individual young person and his or her social world, which includes families, schools, and

communities, and how these interactions shape development. Working from a strengths-based perspective, I

draw on my experiences from the United States and Malaysia to explore the mechanisms through which

healthy, holistic youth development occurs within and across different cultural settings. Specifically, past and

current work includes:

The role of interpersonal relationships and intergenerational partnership on the healthy development of

youth

Youth participation and program quality – what is meaningful youth engagement and quality youth

programming

Youth work – youth work competencies, youth worker professionalization

Youth policy development – at both local and national levels

Religiosity and its development with a focus on Muslim youth

Youth career development

Qualitative research methods
