1 CURRICULUM VITAE PROF MELODI BOTHA 1. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH 1.1 GENERAL INFORMATION Present position: Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria (Department of Business Management) Programme Lead: Phd programme in Business Management Head of Research: Department of Business Management Study leader for PhD and Masters’ students in Entrepreneurship Summary of experience Prof Botha started her career by developing courses in marketing, consumer behavior and entrepreneurship and specifically concentrating on the empowerment of women entrepreneurs in South Africa. Thus, she developed the Women Entrepreneurship Programme (known as WEP) and conducted a national study to determine the financial needs of women entrepreneurs when applying for financial assistance from financial institutions. From this research, various gaps were identified and she focused her efforts on training and educating entrepreneurs in this regard. Her training expertise includes feasibility and business plan training and she developed the Business Plan compilation course at the University of Pretoria. She also trained the staff of the National University of Lesotho on the evaluation of business plans in a train-the-trainer workshop. Her research focuses on training, educating and supporting entrepreneurs at different stages of preparing, starting and managing a business. She completed both her BCom and MPhil Degrees cum laude and received the Sasol Achievement Award for the most eminent postgraduate student, as well as the Elsabe Smith Achievement Award for the best achievement in the MPhil degree. She was invited to speak on the National television talk show “Vuk'uzenzele” where she provided entrepreneurial and business advice to entrepreneurs. She also delivered a keynote address at the Women’s Conference of the Law Society at the Reserve Bank in 2005. In 2006, at the age of 27, she obtained her doctoral degree and received the Anton Rupert Prize for the best research thesis for a DCom degree in Business Management. She published three articles from her Doctoral thesis and established herself in the relatively small entrepreneurship community in South Africa. She also made her mark in the international entrepreneurship arena by winning a “best paper” award at the 2006 Internationalising Entrepreneurship Education and Training Conference (IntEnt) in Brazil. After the completion of her PhD in 2006, she broadened her research agenda with the goal to build knowledge and theory to understand the most effective training and support for nascent, potential, start-up and established entrepreneurs in South Africa. Prof Botha is currently an associate professor and researcher at the Department of Business Management in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. She is a member of the South African Institute for Management Sciences (SAIMS) and the Africa Academy of Management (AFAM) and an external reviewer for

She has made numerous presentations to entrepreneurial and public sector organisations on women entrepreneurship and training skills of entrepreneurs. She published many research articles and delivered many conference papers and received the best researcher prize from the Department of Business Management in 2006, 2010 and 2017. She received a C3 rating from the NRF as a rated researcher in her field.

She served on the research committee within the faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (UP). In addition to normal associate professor responsibilities, she was appointed as the Programme lead for the MPhil degree in Entrepreneurship at the Department of Business Management in 2017. In this capacity she is responsible for managing and overseeing outputs and activities of all lecturers and administrative staff involved in the programme. In 2018 she was appointed as the Head of Research within the Department of Business Management and conducts various initiatives to increase the research outputs of all the staff within the department. She previously consulted and worked with various companies and Government Departments on SME and entrepreneurial issues, including determining the financial needs of women entrepreneurs when applying for financial assistance (conducted for ABSA Bank), determining the effectiveness of the women entrepreneurship programme (WEP) for potential, start-up and established women entrepreneurs in South Africa (Conducted for the Development Bank South Africa). Recent projects for industry include:

1. Determining the large industry support for SMEs in South Africa. Researcher conducted primary and secondary quantitative research and compiled final report and write-up (National Business Initiative).

2. Developing of a holistic care and empowerment programme for HIV/Aids infected people in Mamelodi Pretoria (STH Consortium and Bristol Myers Pharmaceutical group).

3. Determining the financial needs of women entrepreneurs when applying for financial assistance (ABSA Bank).

4. Determining the effectiveness of the women entrepreneurship programme (WEP) for potential, start-up and established women entrepreneurs in South Africa (SAIBL and Development Bank South Africa).

5. Determining the BEE scorecards requirements for SMEs in South Africa (SAIBL). 6. Project member for Enterprises (UP) project for the Centre for Japanese studies at the University of

Pretoria, developing a strategic plan aligned with the University of Pretoria’s 2025 strategy. 7. Determining and refining the success profile of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Entrepreneurship

Programme (research project 2018 to 2019). 8. Developing and training the NGOs as identified by SAB to develop entrepreneurial skills for SAB (2018

to currently) 9. Developing and training of Women in Leadership for the Presidency of South Africa (2019)

Entrepreneurship

My research focuses on training, educating and supporting entrepreneurs at different stages of preparing, starting and managing a business (it is referred to as the stages of the venture life cycle). These stages include nascent, potential, start-up and established entrepreneurs.

8.1 Participation in conferences, workshops and short courses - specify type of contribution: 8.1.1 National Hosted and Chaired The Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World Conference at the University of Pretoria, South Africa in September 2006. Track chair for Entrepreneurship at the South African Institute of Management Sciences (SAIMS) at the University of Pretoria, South Africa in September 2016. 8.1.2 International Invited as one of twelve researchers who participated in the 23rd RENT – Research in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Annual conference, 18 November 2009. The collaborative research roundtable conference was hosted by Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary and co-organised by the European Council for Small Business (ECSB) and the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM). The twelve researchers partook in a workshop which was organised by Associate Professor Luca Iandoli (University of Naples Federico II, Italy) and Prof. D. Friederike Welter (Jonkoping International Business School, Sweden). The focus was on building post-doc networking in entrepreneurship and small business management research. Publication possibilities and individual articles were discussed. The editors of peer-reviewed journals also attended the workshop. The research paper entitled: A project-based learning approach as a method of teaching entrepreneurship to a large group of undergraduate students in South Africa, was accepted for this workshop. This paper was later published in the education journal, Education as Change, in 2010.
