2006-2007 College of Human Ecology Dean’s Award for contributions to community engagement in West Greenville

($500). Participation with R. Sweet in Hard Hats and Colleagues in Community Engagement supported two initiatives: (1) addressing home ownership in the 45-block area of West Greenville through development of studio projects providing residential designs that are affordable, sustainable and historically sensitive to the historic area; and (2) addressing substandard dwelling units owned by low-income households with elderly and infirm residents through the formation of a local affiliate of Rebuilding Together, a 501-C3 non-profit organization that coordinates volunteer efforts to revitalize impoverished neighborhoods.

The interior design program under the leadership of Y. Savut won an award by the National

Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) in recognition of achievement for 2006 Outstanding Annual Requirements. The criterion for this award was to earn an average minimum score of 93 out of 100 points on the evaluation of student project submissions fall 2006. Introduction to architectural hand drafting and symbols for developing design documents. “Residential Building Construction and Materials” (TXMI 3320.) Sophomore students. Developed syllabus, course content and class structure to include site visits to new construction and lecture classes to support site visits. Students complete (10) process boards documenting the building process, site sketches and associated terminology. “Residential Building Systems and Lighting Design” (TXMI 3370.) Developed syllabus, course content and class structure to include field visits to lighting showrooms and lamp suppliers. Students develop understanding of luminaire components, design and build a working luminaire, design schematic layouts for HVAC integration and water systems for residential application. Professionals from the various industries present technical information and new trends in the classroom setting. “Studio III: Kitchen + Bath Design I” (TXMI 3390.) Junior students. Students learn and follow NKBA guidelines to produce full working sets of design documents for a residential kitchen and bath project using AutoCAD. Appliance integration, product specifications for all items, tile takeoffs and purchase orders. “Studio V: Advanced Kitchen and Bath Design II” (TXMI 4390.) Junior students. Students follow NKBA guidelines to produce full design documents for residential cabinetry installations using AutoCAD and are taught 20-20 Technologies design software. Students review and respond to formal HERA research papers related to kitchen and bath, develop an architectural detail collection to clarify custom design and work with a client to fulfill course requirements. “Professional Practices in Residential Design” (TXMI 5320.) Senior students. Developed syllabus, course content and class structure. Christine Piotrowski’s books are used for core study material in class. Students develop complete business strategy, business forms and resume package for employment after graduation. Case study reviews and discussions are included weekly along with guest presentations by professional working within the design industry (from product representatives to principals of design firms)

“Professional Development Course” (TXMI 5901.) Internship preparatory course for Summer Semester between junior and senior year. Students develop a resume and strategies for securing an internship position in their area of interest in the design industry. “Portfolio Development Seminar” (TXMI 5902.) Junior students. Developed course content and class structure. Students develop personal portfolio, resume and website/blog. Course consists of graphic design research, current trends in presenting design information and review of fine tuning submitted work for particular employment opportunities.
