RESEARCH GRANTS AND AWARDS

Ongoing Research Support Study of Latinos – Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging (SOL-INCA) 09/01/2015 – 04/30/2020 R01 AG048642 NIH/NIA This invited Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos ancillary study application is to examine the mild cognitive impairment and dementia syndromes among Latinos. The study would clarify extant Latino dementia prevalence estimates that range from 5% to 21%. SOL-INCA is the largest neuroepidemiologic study of MCI and dementias, and the largest to examine Latinos.

Role: PI Neurocognitive aging, MCI and Alzheimer’s disease DNA methylation among diverse Latinos 09/01/2019 – 8/31/2024 1RF1AG061022-01 (Gonzalez, Fornage) NIH/NIA To examine epigenetic markers of accelerated neurocognitive decline, MCI and AD among diverse Latinos. Additionally, we will use epigenetic markers of aging to examine the biological the Latino Health Paradox (long life-expectancy in spite of socioeconomic disadvantages and excess chronic disease morbidity). Role: MPI MRI Measures of Cerebrovascular Injury and AD Atrophy in a Study of Latinos 07/15/2017 – 06/30/2022 RF1 AG054548 NIH/NIA This invited Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos ancillary study application is for support to examine etiologies of mild cognitive impairment and dementia among Latinos using advanced neuroimaging and GWAS. It is an extension of the SOL-INCA (PI-González: AG48642), which is the largest neuroepidemiologic study of MCI and dementias among diverse Latinos. Role: MPI

UCSD Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center P30 05/01/2019- 04/31/2024 P30AG062429-01 (Brewer) NIH/NIA Our goal is to support research efforts by maintaining resources that include cohorts of subjects with normal cognition, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), AD and other dementias; biological samples; MRI and other brain images; and to maintain a comprehensive database. It also supports three research projects and three pilot projects. Role: Co-investigator/Latino Core Director

San Diego Resource Center for advancing Alzheimer’s Research in Minority Seniors (ARMS) 09/01/2018-06/30/2023 1P30AG059299-01 NIH/NIA (Moore, González, Elders, Gilbert) Our goal is to identify Latino scientists and others from underrepresented backgrounds who are committed to Latino ADRD research, and to support them in becoming independent career scientists. Our proposed Center will focus on transdisciplinary research on Latino Alzheimer’s Role: MPI

Sleep Apnea Phenotypes in Latinos (SLEPT) 02/01/2019-01/31/2021 1R21HL140437-01 (Ramos) NIH/NHLBI The purpose of Sleep Apnea Phenotypes in Latinos (SLEPT) is to refine sleep phenotypes associated with cardiac disorders and events among diverse Latinos. Role: Co-I Pending Applications Study of Latinos- Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging2 05/01/2020 – 04/30/2025 2R01AG048642-06 NIH/NIA The SOL-INCA2 approach blends the NIA-AA research framework on Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers and NIA Health Disparities Research Framework to discover when cardiovascular disease begins contributing to cognitive impairment and dementia to ultimately reduce Latino ADRD disparities. Sleep Apnea, Hearing Loss and Alzheimer’s Disease in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. 04/01/2020 – 06/30/2025 1R01AG064166-01 (Shah) NIH/NIA To understand associations between sleep apnea, and sensory and central nervous systems among diverse Latinos in Study of Latinos-Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging (SOL-INCA). Sleep in Neurocognitive Aging and Alzheimer's Research (SANAR) 04/01/2020-06/30/2025 1R01AG063868-01 (Ramos) The principal aim for SANAR is to differentiate the relative contributions of sleep disorders, actigraphy defined sleep habits and sleep macro- and microarchitecture to silent cerebrovascular injury, cerebral volumes and non-dipping BP profile in Study of Latinos-Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging (SOL-INCA) participants.

Completed Applications

Exploring Sleep in Neurocognitive Aging and Alzheimer’s Research (eSANAR) 08/01/2017-05/31/2019 R21AG56952 NIH/NHLBI In this exploratory study, we analyzed the sleep measures obtained once and two waves of neurocognitive tests data from middle-age and older SOL participants, with the aim to explore the effect of sleep apnea on neurocognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and related dementias (ADRD). We also explored if actigraphy defined sleep duration and sleep fragmentation predicts MCI/ADRD in SOL participants. Role: Co-Investigator
