Our focus this year will be on Literacy, specifically reading comprehension and reading stamina.

FIFTH GRADE SCHEDULE

We started switching classes on September 10th.

Students switch for math and literacy. They have their homeroom teacher for science.

Literacy includes: Writing, Reading, and Social Studies.

8:15-9:00 Morning Work and Announcements

9:00- 9:45 Specials 9:45-10:45 Science 10:45-12:00 Math 12:00-1:15 Lunch and Recess 1:15-3:45 Literacy On Tuesday we have a science lab block

9:00-10:45. Periodically we will have Nature Preserve Labs during this time.

On Thursday we have double specials 9:00-10:30.

TESTING

EOG’s take place in May. Please do not plan any vacations during that month.

Fifth graders take EOG’s in math, reading, and science.

Students will be taking CMS formatives throughout the year in reading, math, science, and social studies.

PARENT ASSISTANT

the office and the Parent Assistant help line. Check your child’s CURRENT GRADES on a

regular basis for grade monitoring. Disregard the cumulative grade.

This is your child’s cumulative grade, not current grade. You will need to click on the “details” box corresponding to the class you want to see.

If you can see the reporting terms box indicates that you are looking at a cumulative grade because “all reporting terms” is in that field. To access your child’s current grade, change the reporting term to the CURRENT quarter and then click display, again.

This is the 1st grading period. So your child’s grades will not look any different. However, the box stays “1st grading period”. As we move to the 2nd quarter you will notice a different screen.

HERITAGE DAY

Heritage Day is a tradition at Polo Ridge where students celebrate the diversity within our school and participate in interactive activities dealing with immigration and ethnicities.

Heritage Day will be on October 30th Parent volunteers are needed. Room moms will

coordinate the volunteers. If you have not already signed up and would like to volunteer, please contact your room mom.

Heritage Album Project- The due date for these projects is Oct. 22nd. Points will be taken off if your child turns their project in late. Projects will not be accepted after Oct. 24th.

Williamsburg is March 26th-28th.

A parent meeting will be held for further information including chaperone selection and pricing.

Notices about parent meetings will be on the website, written agendas, and emailed in the weekly updates.

$4.50 per student for Time For Kids $5.50 per student for Heritage Day (this

covers the cost of the Native American Museum)

MORNING WORK CONNECTED TO SCIENCE

This notebook is a journaling notebook. In the morning the students respond to various journal questions.

Some times they are current events or articles I have pulled regarding the unit we are studying.

Students must follow the guidelines that were set at the beginning of the year.

The students know they must complete their handout/work before leaving for specials, or else they will have to complete it during either lunch or recess.

Students will work on various projects relating to our Unit One Theme: Heritage (album)

Balanced Literacy- Focuses on Spelling, Grammar, Writing, Novel studies, and reading comprehension. Mainly nonfiction information text this year.

Vocabulary- Imagine It and Spelling

Students novels will be assigned in their Literacy classes and you will know which titles to get by the end of this week.
