ABOUT

GODGod is the one and only true God, yet He

exists in three persons: God the Father,

God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God is the Creator, so everything belongs

to Him and is under His control. God is

holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and

loving. God is all knowing and purposeful,

so He’s at work to bring about His will. No

person, thing, or idea compares to God.

ABOUT

THE BIBLEGod reveals Himself to us through the

Bible, and it is 100% accurate, reliable, and

authoritative.

ABOUT

PEOPLEPeople are made in God’s image and for

His pleasure. But everybody falls short of

God’s intention, or ideal, for people. In

other words, everyone has sinned. As a

result, we are all separated from Him, even

though He wants an intimate relationship

with each of us.

ABOUT

SALVATIONThat’s why Jesus—God’s Son—came and

lived on this earth, died, and rose again.

God offers His free gift of salvation to all

who believe in Jesus and accept Him as

Savior—the only way to be forgiven and

reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts

this gift is adopted as a son or daughter

into God’s family and will live with Him

forever in heaven.

FOR LEADERS ONLYGOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WISDOM, FAITH, & FRIENDSHIP ANDGOD’S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD’S BIG STORY

When we look at the life and teaching

of Jesus, we’re reminded how

important it is to go back to the basics.

Luke gives us some insight into how

Jesus grew up. Luke 2:52 notes that

Jesus grew in wisdom and in favor with

God and others. Throughout our lives,

we should also circle back to these

ideas as we seek to live like Jesus.

These are the basics: Wisdom—I

need to make the wise choice;

Faith—I can trust God no matter what;

Friendship—I should treat others the

way I want to be treated.

Wisdom: Jesus taught that the best

way to learn what we should do is by

listening to God’s Word. The Bible

teaches us the wise choice for many

situations.

Faith: Jesus came to earth to

physically show us God’s love. We can

grow stronger faith in God because we

have seen what He did through Jesus.

Friendship: Jesus walked every day

with His friends, allowing them to

get to know Him, teaching them, and

helping their hurts. By following Jesus’

example, we can know how we should

treat others.

When we return to these ideas we can

begin to discover what God is doing in

us to change the world around us. This

summer we’re heading back to the

basics, where we’ll learn from Jesus’

life, teachings, and example.

This month, let’s think about how:

(1) God reveals Himself through the

person of Jesus Christ who lived the

perfect life on our behalf.

(2) If we want to be more like Jesus

we should strive to grow as He did in

wisdom, faith, and friendship.

(3) The Bible is the source of wisdom

and informs how we can have faith

as God uses us to change the world

around us.

This week, we’re discovering:

In this week’s Bible story, Jesus tells a

story about a farmer who sows seeds

in different types of soil (Matthew

13:1-23). Some seed fell along the

path, some in rocky places and some

among thorns. But the seed that fell

on good soil produced a harvest.

The seed is like God’s Word, and the

soil is like people who hear God’s

Word. If we listen to God and do what

He says, we will be good soil and see

great growth. Our Bottom Line is God

is doing something in me when I do

what He says.

The monthly memory verse is: “And

Jesus grew in wisdom and stature,

and in favor with God and men.”

Luke 2:52 NIrV Growth is not simply

about knowing what God says; it’s also

about doing what God says. Learning

God’s Word and applying it to our lives

is the best way to grow like Jesus.

PLUG IN: FOCUS THE ENERGYFocus the energy on today’s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to help the kids understand today’s parable and see what kind of soil they might be. Pray the kids will find a way to do what they hear in the Bible. Thank God for growing us in wisdom, faith, and friendship.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWhat You Need: No supplies

What You Do:Collect kids’ offerings as they arrive. Ask them to tell each other all the rules they can think of that they have at home, school, church, and anywhere else they go. Talk about one place and its rules at a time.

2. BASE CAMP CRAFTWhat You Need: Paper cups, gray and green paper, scissors, glue; optional: mountain range photos (optional)

What You Do:Set out the supplies. Ask kids what they think they could make out of those items. Tell them those are all great ideas, but you’d like them to make what you tell them to. Explain that they’ll be making their own mountain range. Instruct them to cut triangles out of the paper and glue them onto the cup, overlapping them as they wish to make a unique design. They should also draw some climbers on the mountains. (Optional: Show them an example from a book, a map, or a picture on your smartphone.) A couple of cups could be pushed together to make a long mountain range.

What You Say:“Those are some great mountain ranges. You all did a great job of doing what I said in order to make your craft. Usually Base Camp would be down here at the bottom (point) and that’s where you’d prepare for the climb. Let’s go back

CATCH ON: MAKE THE CONNECTIONMake the connection of how today’s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions.

1. POPCORN STORY (application activity / review the Bible story)What You Need: “Parable of the Sower” (Activity Page), unpopped popcorn, popped popcorn, salt, dark-colored markers, paper towels (or bowls or plates)

What You Do:Give each kid a paper towel, bowl, or plate, and a marker. Read the story aloud, and do or tell kids to do what it says in italicized print.

If you do not want to use popcorn, kids can pretend to be the popcorn. They can do actions such as:

What You Say:“This was such a fun way to tell this story! I love reading Jesus’ parables, because they’re interesting, but they also tell us how God wants us to live.

When we read God’s Word and do what it says, we grow and become more like Jesus. God is doing something in me when I do what He says.”

* 2. ADD A MOVE (application activity / great for boys)What You Need: No supplies

What You Do:This game is similar to “Going on a Picnic,” but it uses movements. Circle the kids up. Ask one kid to do one movement while he says what it is, such as, “Jump!” The next kid says and does a new movement, and then does the first movement, so he might do, “Clap, jump!” The third kid adds yet another movement: “Clap, jump, twist.” Once all kids have added a movement, everyone should do all the movements together. Repeat if you have time and kids are still interested.

What You Say:“You did a great job of doing what other people said and repeating their actions. That’s what we need to try to do with God, too. We should do what He says and what Jesus did. When we do that, we will grow the way Jesus did. It’s not enough to know about what God says; growing is about DOING what God says. God is doing something in me when I do what He says.”

3. VERSE TRAIN (memory verse activity)What You Need: “Memory Verse Phrases” (Activity Pages), tape

What You Do:Tape a phrase to each kid’s back. Tell kids to work together to look at the phrases and put themselves in order. The trick is that kids can’t tell each other what their phrase is while they’re working, so nobody will know exactly what is on their own back. They should line up like a train—the kid with the first phrase is at the front of the train, the next kid puts his hands on the first kid’s shoulders, and so on. Once they’re in order, encourage them to move around the room while saying the verse in fun ways. Maybe each kid says his own phrase. Perhaps they say the whole thing together and each kid jumps up or swerves when his phrase is said. Challenge them to be as creative as possible.

What You Say:“In this activity, you had to do what other people told you in order to get the verse in order. You couldn’t do this on your own, because you couldn’t see what was on your back. When we try to help other people and they do what we tell them, it feels good, right? We also need to do what God says. When we do what God says, we make Him really happy. We let Him know that we trust Him enough to follow Him, make wise choices, and grow like Jesus did. God is doing something in me when I do what He says.”

PRAY AND DISMISSWhat You Need: No supplies

What You Do: Ask kids to sit in a circle, bow their heads, and close their eyes. Instruct them to think of one of God’s commands that they have trouble obeying. Give some examples, like maybe they have a hard time with telling the truth. Or maybe it’s hard to be kind to a brother or sister or someone at school. Tell kids one thing that is hard for you to obey. Make sure it is age-appropriate. After giving kids time to think, ask them to silently pray that God will help them obey Him in those areas. After several seconds, pray aloud for all kids by name, asking God to help them obey Him.

Parable of the Sower

Parable of the SowerThere was a farmer who had a big contract with the popcorn factory. So, he planned to grow a LOT of corn. He went out into the field with his bags full of corn kernels—the seeds—and planted every patch of earth he could find!

Some of those seeds just fell onto the path. Those were easy targets for the birds, who swooped in and gobbled them up in moments! (Give kids some unpopped kernels.)

Other seeds landed in thin soil over rocks. They quickly grew into corn plants that shot up fast and tall! But they hardly had any roots. So, when the sun burned bright and the temperature rose, well, those plants wilted and gave up. (Tell kids to use the markers to make their popcorn kernels look burned.)

Some of the seeds fell into dirt that looked pretty good. They put down roots and started sprouting some spiffy corn stalks. But it turns out there were lots of weeds in that dirt. The weeds grew just as fast as the corn and started to choke it out. Pretty soon, those stalks couldn’t get any air or sun or water, and they keeled over and died. (Sprinkle some salt on each kid’s kernels.)

But the rest of the seeds landed in good soil! They put down strong roots and grew tall and sturdy. And when it was time, they produced so much corn that the farmer had more than enough to ship to the popcorn factory! (Give kids fully popped popcorn. If they’re going to eat it, ask them to toss out the old kernels first.)

Some people are like the seeds—or, in our case, the unpopped kernels—scattered on the path. When they hear about God’s story, it just lands on the surface. They don’t take it in, they don’t get the chance to POP, and so the enemy swoops in and takes them away. They don’t grow at all.

Other people are like the seeds thrown on rocky soil. They get excited about God’s story, but they don’t want to do the hard work to keep growing. So, when the emotions wear off and tough times come, they don’t have anything to show for it. And then all you’ve got is a bag full of gross burnt popcorn.

Some people are like the seed that got planted in weedy soil. They hear God’s words and start to grow, but then life steps in and they get filled with worries and discontent because they don’t have all the things they want. They forget what they knew about God’s story. And the popcorn gets cov-ered with WAY too much salt.

But other people are like the seed that landed in good soil. They hear the news of God’s story and they think about it. They ask for help to understand it. They live it out. They actually do what God says. And God does amazing things through them to change the world around them!

DAY 1READ Matthew 13:23Ask a parent if you can have a popcorn snack sometime today, and while you eat it, read this!

Jesus’ parable about the sower shows us the importance of making our hearts ready to receive His words. If we really want to learn more about God and grow in our relationship with Him, we have to be willing to put in the time to grow! If we don’t do what we need to do, we’ll be like a popcorn kernel that never gets popped—and what can you really do with that? On the other hand, if we spend time reading God’s Word, praying and going to church—and if we are willing to follow through on the things we discover—it’s like eating a delicious bowl of popcorn. Fully living and enjoying life!

THANK God for giving you a soft heart that’s ready to receive His words.

READ Proverbs 1:7If you really want to gain knowledge, you must begin by having respect for the Lord. But foolish people hate wisdom and training.

Have you ever tried to do something complicated without reading the instructions or getting help from an expert? Even athletes have trainers who are experts in exercise and nutrition and help them be the best that they can be. Who is someone you trust as an “expert” in the basics—someone who makes wise choices, trusts God no matter what, and treats others well? Reach out to that person today and ask them for some advice on how you can grow. Maybe even ask if they would mentor/train you to be the best that you can be at The Basics!

ASK others for help as you grow in The Basics.

LOOK for ways to put God’s Word into practice this week!
