Dolphin ChatWrite a paragraph about how dolphins communicate using information learned from the fiction and the nonfiction parts of Dolphin Rescue. Include a topic sentence and facts about dolphin communication in your paragraph. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.2; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.2; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2

Community Clean UpAtticus and Maddie know firsthand how important it is to keep trash away from the shore and the water. They are preparing to participate in a beach clean up to keep their seaside community free of garbage. Design a poster to encourage beachgoers to keep beaches clean. Think of a slogan and an image that would make people pay attention to your important message.

Under the SeaDesign an ocean mural as a class. Use a five- to six-foot piece of butcher paper to create your ocean scene. Work in teams to decide what should be included in your mural using information found in Dolphin Rescue about what lives in the ocean or in the shallow water of a cove. Draw the various examples of sea life in each area and label each animal. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.1

We Are FamilyCollect information from the text to explain why dolphins live in pods, or groups. Present this information in a persuasive paragraph with illustrations. NGSS: 3-LS2-1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W. 4.1

Trash GraphDuring the International Coastal Cleanup Day of 2015, more than 18 million pounds of trash were removed from coastal areas around the world. Use the data from the Coastal Cleanup Day spread in chapter ten to create a bar graph showing how much “unusual” trash was discovered during the cleanup. You will need a piece of graph paper to draw an X and a Y axis. Label the Y axis by 5s beginning at the number 20 to represent the quantity of each item found. Label the X axis with the six unusual types of garbage that were found during the cleanup. Fill in the bar graph to show how many of each item were pulled from the ocean. IT’S A MYSTERY

NAME: ____________________________

In Dolphin Rescue, author Catherine Nichols outlines how to solve a mystery by following four steps. The main characters in the book, Maddie and Atticus, want to solve the mystery of who or what is overturning trash cans and spreading garbage all over the island where they live. Read the mystery-solving steps in the first column below and find evidence in Dolphin Rescue of Maddie and Atticus following each step to solve the mystery they face. List your information from the text in the chart. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.1

Steps for How to Solve a Mystery

How the Characters Followed This Step

Observe: To figure out what happened, look for clues.

Investigate: Look around for evidence—for example, footprints may tell you whether someone was wearing sneakers, work boots, or had bare feet. Ask people what they saw.

Take notes: Write down details. When did it happen? Who was there? What else was going on?

Determine possible solutions: Consider the evidence. Are there different possibilities? Be logical—consider how likely or unlikely something is.

ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS

Corn Hunt

In Farm Friends Escape!, readers learn that corn grown on farms has many uses—from food for animals to fuel for cars. Look in your pantry and refrigerator at home to find food items that have corn listed as an ingredient. Make a list to share with your class of the foods in your house that contain corn.
