Built in 1901 by John M. Addy, the Addy Sea stands oceanfront in Bethany Beach, on the corner of Oceanview Parkway and Atlantic Avenue. Its rich history is apparent in the Victorian architecture, cedar shingles, and gingerbread trimmings. John Addy, one of the founders of Bethany Beach originally built the Victorian house as a summer retreat for his family. Three generations of Addys cared for the home before it was sold to Leroy (Roy) Gravatte in 2016, who then passed on the position of caretaker to his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff & Sherene Gravatte. When Roy purchased the property in 1974, he put a lot of work into it, adding bathrooms to all the guest rooms and restoring some of the original elements. “Roy did a phenomenal job of keeping the original structure while updating,” says Sherene. The Addy Sea underwent more renovations this year and now boasts a brand new mahogany front door on the ocean side of the house, new air conditioning and heating units in each guest room, and updated paint and décor. In the off season, the Addy Sea serves as a beautiful venue for intimate wedding ceremonies and in the summer months, the 13 room Bed & Breakfast can expect to see about 95% occupancy. “Many guests have been staying here for years,” says Sherene.“Ithasbecomeasecondhometomany.”TheAddySea’ssignificanceinthearea,asoneof the original structures in Bethany is one of the many reasons they continue to renew their Chamber membership year after year. Celebrating 35 years as a Chamber member, Sherene says because the Addy Sea is an integral part of Bethany’s History, “it is important to have ties to the community.” To learn more about the Addy Sea and its history, visit addysea.com or stop in and say hello!

Lifeguard AWARD CELEBRATION

On Thursday, August 16th, the Chamber hosted the annual Lifeguard Award Celebration to honor the men and women who keep our beaches safe all summer. It was a beautiful evening to celebrate at the Big Chill Beach Club and recognize a “Lifeguard of the Year” from each patrol within the Quiet Resorts Region. Congratulations to all the winners! Thank you to all the lifeguards and patrol captains; and thank you to all the sponsors of the Lifeguard Awards for making the night possible.

Fenwick Island Beach Patrol Captain, Tim Ferry, announced his retirement at the event. Congratulations on 43 years of service! His daily presence will be missed by many, but he promised to stay involved with the beach patrol.
