Project update Ausgrid is progressing with plans to lay a new 132,000 volt underground electricity cable from Kingsford to Randwick. A set of spare conduits (plastic pipes) will alsobe installed for a future second cable. As outlined in our April newsletter, Ausgrid’s substation in Randwick is supplied by two fluid-filled 132,000 volt underground cables from a substation in Waterloo. These cables are over 40 years old and must be replaced before they become unreliable. The new cables would be connected to the next closest supply point to Randwick with available connection points. This is our Kingsford substation. An environmental assessment (known as a Review of Environmental Factors or REF) has been prepared for the preferred cable route and is now on display. This newsletter provides an update on the project and information on how you can view and make a submission on the REF. Community feedback Since our last newsletter, we have continued liaising with the community and key stakeholders about the project. This process involved seeking community feedback on the preferred cable route and construction process. Thank you to those who have provided feedback to date. The main areas of community interest are around route selection, electric and magnetic fields (EMF), cost and construction impacts. Detailed information about the potential impacts associated with the construction, operation and maintenance of the new cables is in the REF, along with mitigation measures to address them. The most commonly asked questions and our answers are available on our project web page. Project assessment and approval Ausgrid is the approving authority for the work under the NSW Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979. As part of the approval process, an environmental assessment has been prepared. The REF is now on exhibition and Ausgrid encourages further community comments on the proposal. Ausgrid will consider all feedback prior to the project being assessed for construction approval. Next steps Following the REF exhibition period, Ausgrid will review and consider all submissions and prepare a report. The project will then be determined for approval based on the information in the REF. Subject to planning approval, construction would start in late 2018 and be completed by late 2019/early 2020. You will receive an update after the environmental assessment is complete and a summary of the submissions has been prepared. This will be available on the project web page.
