Meet our Candidate

For the position of Raymond Campus Pastor

Jon LaMontagne

Together with his wife, Rachel, and children: James, David, and Samantha (and Baby Red Pepper)

For the past 5 years, Jon has served as the Pastor and Camp Director at Calvary Baptist Church in Dugspur, VA. He received his pastoral ordination in 2010. His references tell us that, in this leadership role, he has demonstrated a genuine love for people, a humble and teachable spirit, a deep commitment to Scripture, and a dedicated, caring heart. Jon has completed a Master’s Degree in Biblical Languages and a Bachelor’s Degree in Pastoral Ministry from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, FL. According to Jon’s own testimony, his wife, Rachel, is “one of my greatest strengths and assets in the ministry.” Rachel has a Master’s Degree in English Education and Bachelor’s Degree in English, also from Pensacola Christian College. She became a member of the PCC faculty, teaching literature and English grammar while her husband attended seminary. Rachel is also a gifted pianist who teaches students while she raises her children. Jon and Rachel are native New Englanders, having both grown up in Southern Maine. They feel a strong calling to return to this area and assist with building God’s Kingdom in this area of the country. Jon will be preaching live at our Raymond Campus on August 9, and at our Greenland Campus on August 16. Meet and Greet Receptions are planned at each Campus.

Sermon Notes: Week 4: The Ten Suggestions? — Powerful Families

The Great Commandment

“'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the _______ and the _________ hang on

these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40

The Fifth Commandment

“Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may _______ _______ and that it may go well with you in the

land the LORD your God is giving you.”

“Honor” in this context carries a rich set of meanings: to treasure, to reward, to respect, to obey, to value, to regard in high esteem.

Encouraging Honor

Parents and others in authority must live in a way that encourages honor.

Honor God

“'A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the _______ due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?' says the

LORD Almighty.” Malachi 1:6 Honor your Spouse

“Submit to _____ __________ out of reverence for Christ.” “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.”

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her....”

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother....'” Ephesians 5:21, 22, 25; 6:1-2a

Page 7: Current Sermon Series - Bethany Church€¦ · 2015 Actual Budget Actual vs. Budget Giving $1,104,773 $1,113,000 $(8,227) Net Expenses $1,127,895 $1,143,069 $(15,174) Income/ (Loss)

In God's kingdom, authority and submission are not dirty words. They work together to ensure healthy, strong and joy-filled families.

Honor Others

“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with __________ and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from

your heart.” Ephesians 6:5-6

“And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no

____________ with him.” Ephesians 6:9

Paul is not saying that we should ignore injustice, oppression or abuse. Rather, he is taking this discussion to a whole other level. He is telling us that no matter what our station in this life may be, we have an obligation to honor one another.

Giving Honor All this effort we have put into training our children ends up training us. We have actually had to learn better how to honor God, honor our spouse and honor one another.

Broad and _______

The Ten Commandments each start with one, very concrete problem and then, as we unpack them, they expand into broader and deeper areas of challenge.

The Fifth Commandment, which requires us to honor our parents, also requires us to honor all those who have authority in our lives.

Near and ________

We start with honor in the home, and God intends that, from this source, honor will spread throughout His people and into the world around us.

Page 8: Current Sermon Series - Bethany Church€¦ · 2015 Actual Budget Actual vs. Budget Giving $1,104,773 $1,113,000 $(8,227) Net Expenses $1,127,895 $1,143,069 $(15,174) Income/ (Loss)

Connect Group Discussion Guide: Week 4 — Powerful Families

OPENING

How did you learn to “honor” your parents? How did they encourage or discourage you from honoring them?

GOING DEEPER

1. Read the Fifth Commandment in the sermon notes, above. How would you define the word honor?

2. Why is it important for parents to honor God if they want their children to honor them?

3. How does our treatment of our spouse or former spouse affect our children’s willingness to respect authority?

4. How can we honor authority, even if we don’t necessarily agree with some of their decisions and actions?

CHALLENGE

What can we do to better encourage our children to “honor your father and mother”, even if we do not have children of our own?

Continue to memorize the first five commandments with your family and your Connect Group.
