The feel of the country in the heart of the city
Principal’s Report Newsletter 1 2017 Welcome to returning students and families, and a special welcome to the families and staff joining Curl Curl North Public School for the first time.
All returning students seem to appear with a spring in their step, refreshed after the long summer break. I thank parents, staff and students who have all done their bit to ensure a calm and ordered start to the year.
Southern Grasslands I’m sure you will all agree that we can now call the ‘Southern Grasslands’ its name with a feeling of pride as for the first time in years the whole area is looking like a lush green playing space.
I was thrilled to see that in January the Department of Education, fulfilled their promise and leveled and filled the Southern Grasslands before planting grass across the whole playing area. The work had been planned for the end of last year but contractors were not available until mid January of this year.
As you probably have noticed the grass needs plenty of water so we have sprinklers being continually rotated throughout each day and evening. Enormous thanks go to David Gabbott and Justine Blood‐Scott and her family for their daily shifts to ensure the grass has the best possible start.
The children will not be able to access the area for anther few weeks but I am sure you will all agree that this small inconvenience is worth the wait.
Staffing There have been a few changes to staff this year and this newsletter includes the 2017 class teacher list for your information.
Following a merit selection and interview process at the end of last year, one of our assistant principals, Talia Morgan, was successful in gaining a temporary appointment as relieving Deputy Principal for the 2017 school year through an Expression of Interest at Randwick Public School.
We wish Jack Tier well as he takes up a teaching position at Elanora Heights PS, giving him further opportunities to build on his musical theatre
background and continue his professional growth as a classroom practitioner.
We welcome new teachers to the school – Miss Rebecca Hooper, Mrs Jenni Reinhardt, Mrs Janice Gonczi, Mrs Lauren Hyett and Mr Jarrod Hyde. I am confident that all will add to our strong teaching team.
Principal School Leadership I have been selected through merit to undertake a 2 day per week role this year as a Principal, School Leadership which will utilise my skills as an experienced school leader built up over the past 20 years.
The Principal, School Leadership role involves working “shoulder to shoulder” with principals and aspiring leaders in developing their professional practices as identified in the Australian Standard for Principals through coaching, mentoring and professional learning activities targeted to the needs of individual principals and aspiring leaders. A focus will be on developing capacity to innovate for sustained school improvement and my role will primarily be supporting and working with colleagues in the Northern Sydney area.
I will be at school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Karen Crawford, Deputy Principal, will be relieving principal on Thursdays and Fridays for this term.
Parent teacher information sessions We look forward to seeing you at these valuable information sessions next week as per the flyer that was sent home this week.
Kindergarten We look forward to our kindergarten students commencing on Monday 6 February. Students with surnames A‐L will commence at 9.30a.m. and students with surnames M‐Z will commence at 10.00a.m. A reminder kindergarten students during February will finish school at 2.00p.m.

Deputy Principal’s Report Welcome back everyone!
Last year, at Christmas time Mrs O’Brien organised through our school library a ‘giving tree’ and what a wonderful success it was.
Below is a letter of thanks from Terry Bowers the head minister at St Marks, Freshwater. Well done Curly families and Mrs O’Brien, Mrs Turner and Mrs Turner’s daughter!

School News Chess Club News Learn how to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Curl Curl North Public School is held before school from
8:00am – 9:00am, with two separate groups. The Beginner group is on Tuesdays, starting on 14 February, and the Intermediate/Advanced group is on Wednesdays, starting on 8 February.
Chess is the world’s most loved board game. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment! Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games, with personal feedback from the coach.
Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, solving puzzles, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.
If your child is interested in taking part, please pick up an enrolment form from the school office, or you can email [email protected] for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170 or Mr Ballinger at school on 9905 1757
Intermediate and Advanced Chess (Y1‐Y6) Chess will commence for both Intermediate and Advanced players next Wednesday 8 February at 8.00am in the Library. The Sydney Academy of Chess will be providing the chess tutor and they will be collecting payments direct from parents. The school will not be collecting payments as has happened in previous years. See flyer at the end of this newsletter.
Beginner Chess (for Y1‐Y6) Chess for Beginners will commence on Tuesday 14 February, in 6H classroom (next to the Library) at 8.00am. The Sydney Academy of Chess will be collecting payments direct from parents. The school will not be collecting payments as has happened in previous years. See flyer at the end of this newsletter.
