“The nation’s robust recycling industry is increasingly targeting clothes -- even those that are stained, ripped, mismatched or out-of-fashion. Companies, and non-profit groups are partnering with cities eager to reduce landfill costs. They pick up the clothes, sell or reprocess them into wiping rags and other goods, and give the cities or local charities a cut of the pie -- often pennies per pound.”

USA Today - Great Futures Start Here

A “Green” Community

Queen Creek’s award-winning recycling program is making news nationwide for its innovative approach to environmental education and first-of-its-kind textile curbside collection. Our textile program allows residents a convenient opportunity to recycle their discarded textiles, which reduces unnecessary landfill space. It also aids in local charities and jobs that feed dollars within the community.

The Town distributes, via U.S. Mail, a Do More Blue Jeans information package, which includes a customized blue textile bag with instructions imprinted directly on the bag. The nearly 9,000 households that utilize the Town’s waste and recycling service now have the convenience of filling up their bag with unwanted clothes, shoes, boots, sandals, sheets, towels, or blankets; and then placing the bag directly into their blue recycling cart to be collected on their regular recycling pick-up day.

The Town of Queen Creek has grown from rich rural roots to one of the most innovatively planned, family friendly hometowns in Arizona. While relatively small, Queen Creek’s 31,000+ residents share a common concern for preserving our physical environment and maintaining our high quality of life. In 2010, Queen Creek started its first ever Town-wide trash and recycling curbside collection. After only three years of providing this service, Queen Creek received several awards and recognition for successful and groundbreaking initiatives, such as same-day trash and recycling collection, enhanced inspections, GIS tracking, and of course, the first-of-its-kind textile curbside collection.

The Town of Queen Creek was honored to choose the Boys & Girls Club of the East Valley - Queen Creek Branch, as the charitable organization to receive the proceeds from the program. In 2013, the program collected more than 27,000 lbs of material and donated $2,700 to the Boys & Girls Club.

Sharing Our Success The Town of Queen Creek is offering local businesses the unique opportunity to partner and promote services through this award winning program.

The Do More Blue Jeans curbside textile collection program is a public-private partnership that was recently recognized by Arizona Forward, the leading organization spotlighting projects that demonstrate a high level of environmental commitment and contribution to the region’s overall sustainability.

Known as the “Academy Awards” of the environmental community, Arizona Forwards’ “The Environmental Excellence Awards” event is Arizona’s oldest and most prominent competition of its kind. Of the more than 110 entries, the Town of Queen Creek was among the 33 Awards of Merit winners honored at their September gala. The Town is also proud to have received the 2013 Recycler of the Year Award from the Arizona Recycling Coalition for this highly innovative program.
